Why should anyone develop the proven qualities of a great leader? Before I explain the why part of this equation, we need to understand the value of leadership and how it can impact every aspect of your life.

John C. Maxwell defines a principle called the Law of the Lid as "leadership ability is the lid that determines a person's level of effectiveness." For example, the lower a person's ability to lead, the lower the lid on their potential. The higher a person's ability to lead, the higher their level of effectiveness in their organization. Overall your ability to lead always determines your level of effectiveness and potential impact in any aspect of your life. Whatever you want to accomplish in life is always restricted by your ability to lead other's.

Now to become a leader yourself you must have the ability to demonstrate that you have the qualitites of leadership.

The first quality of leadership is vision. Leaders have a vision. Vision is the ability to see into the future. Vision is the ability to see what others don't see. For example, the Wright Brothers had a vision that a machine could be built where people can fly it. Thomas Edison had the vision of one day a force could be discovered that would light up the world. Leaders have the ability to see greater possibilities.

Probably the most respected quality of a leader is integrity. This is the second quality a leader has. Integrity means you must have complete honesty with regard to everything that you say and do. As a leader you must admit to all your shortcomings, includes developing your strengths and compensating for you weaknesses.

The third important quality of a leader is courage. Courage is visible in the leader's words and actions. It's absolutely necessary to succeed because you must step out in faith and search for the unknown. This means you must face the inevitable doubts and uncertainty that will show up with every venture. Courage is also the ability to stand by your principles that you believe in and refuse to compromise unless the alternative just feels right.

The fourth quality of a leader is dedication. It means spending whatever time or energy is necessary to accomplish the task at hand. A leader inspires dedication by example, doing whatever it takes to complete the next step toward the vision. By setting an excellent example, leaders can show followers that there are only opportunities to achieve something great.

The fifth quality of leadership is responsibility. As people will say "the buck stops here." No matter what the results are in your life, positive or negative, good or bad, you and you alone are 100% responsible for those results. You cannot play the blame game any more. True leaders know they are responsible for every action they take.

All of us were born to have the best things in life. You were born to be a leader. You were born to be great. Live up to that greatest and may you discover the great leader inside of you.
