How many times have you been fired?

Hey Warriors!

How many times have you been fired?

I was listening to one of Perry Marshall MP3s and he asked how many in the audience had been fired.

Hands here, hands there, hands everywhere.

Lets just say it was A LOT!

Got me thinking if IM attracts ADD, authority questioning rebels?

I'm proud to say I'm been fired or "laid off" from just about every job I've ever had. I've 6 in my bag.

So, how many times have you been fired?

haha...well I just picked up and left the only job I ever had after only 3 months of work.

I can't stand to sit around and do a bunch of pointless things that have no bearing on my life sooooo...I imagine if I got a job I'd be fired in weeks : 0

If people don't get fired it's either because they enjoy their job(don't have a problem with that) or they've just been raised to work hard on what their task is no matter the outcome(not horrid either)..I'm pretty sure that most of us here have been fired or laid off...because if they cared they wouldn't be pokin around this forum!!

    So great thread dude

I've been fired once and that was enough for me, lol!

I was fired from a healthcare job that I (mostly) enjoyed and had been an employee at for approximately 15 years, almost my whole adult working life. I'd held three different positions there over the years. This job had been my "home away from home" and I had some really great friendships, connections and memories. If I *had* to work (and I did) it was a decent place to be. I felt pretty lucky. Not to mention, I needed that paycheck, of course!

The firing was due to scheduling conflicts and lack of communication (on their part) as I had followed policy and procedure, as I had always done throughout the years there. The fact that I was being fired meant that any job doing a reference check on me that I applied to in the future would be told by my former company that I was not rehireable, despite all of my years there as an employee with a good reputation. Being that I spent most of my working life at this company, they were the only reference I could put down. I had no other options to choose from.

I felt devastated and betrayed when it happened, but soon became very angry. They tried to fight me on unemployment, but I fought back, and "won" during phone court, so it turns out the state saw the company had been in the wrong, as well. I won't lie...I felt some satisfaction in that! However, even though it's now been a few years since this happened, I still feel some disappointment in that whole situation.

This made me realize three important things for certain:

      (1) It CAN happen to you!

      (2) You can have a long history as a dependable, dedicated and valuable employee and give years of your life, but when it comes down to it, there is just no such thing as "job security"!

      3) You must figure out how to be your own boss!

This is a great thread, I bet a VERY high percentage of entrepreneurs have been fired.

Most people are embarrassed to admit it. Not me. I was fired once. I've been self-employed ever since. At the time, I thought my world was ending. It only took a few months to understand that my LIFE was finally beginning.

Same here. My last boss/job was pushing unrealistic targets not to mention another member of staff in my same rank who felt the need to **** stir behind my back. Poisonous company and I left because I had the guy call me thinking I was my boss and begin to Bad mouth me only to realise seconds later it was me. Lol I laugh now but that was about all I was going to take. I quite the next day with no job to go to. I ended up working for myself and never looked back. I've had a fantastic time learning how and it made me realise you don't have to rely on someone else to line your pockets. I've had awesome up and bad lows but I feel I gained lots of knowledge in the process.

    You wouldn't believe it but...

    13 times.

Dead serious. One of the strangest advetures in my life
was constantly forcing myself to realize that I am born
to lead my own destiny, and not follow someone elses
    plan for me.

I was actually a great worker, but my personality and
confidence seemed to irritate those who wanted some
    one a little less...outgoing?

Ah...but now I call the shots

Once. One week they were telling me to "get management" and when they figured out I wasn't interested they canned me (6 days before Christmas).

It turned out great though. I bought the equipment and went into business against them and was netting $150/hour (a little more than they were paying me).

When you are fired is better to stay on good terms with your old boss, especially considering that upcoming employers might be phoning your ex boss for references.

I've been fired twice. Once was technically a forced resignation.
Some firms don't like firing, but it becomes a bear to get
unemployment if you quit. The good thing is that usually
they will give you a good word on your next job. It's
    a trade off.

Received a layoff notice a year ago, but was rehired on

I love that perspective, Terra! I have "fired" a few employers over the years, too!

I've only been fired once, years ago, and was released from a business that was closing its doors not so many years ago ... and in both cases, it was a tremendous weight off my shoulders!

I tend to be focused and dedicated to the causes I support (including employers, back in the day), so, in the past, I often stuck with jobs I didn't like because of the belief that I was "contributing" to the business or the community.

Since I have been self-employed and working at home, I have been happier ... although there HAVE been times I would like to have been able to fire my boss! lol

Like when he makes me stay up until 1 p.m. or later finishing something when I would rather go to bed. He is such an awful slave driver.

I was fired once. I worked in a salad factory where we made potato, macaroni, and all kinds of salads that got shipped to local supermarkets. I was on the macaroni salad packing line and it was a beautiful day out. I was 16 at the time, my summer job.

I decided I wanted to be outdoors so I picked up a pint container of fresh-from-the-vat macaroni salad, walked over to the forman and dumped the container on to his shoes. Fired instantly, thought he was going to take a shot at me. Got a nice tan that afternoon.

The gal who got me the job, the daughter of the owner, called me up that night laughing herself silly after hearing what I'd done and offered my my job back. I think she kinda liked me.... :p

Jeez. Many times. You cannot expect a j-o-b to go on forever--at some point you're going to get tired of the job, or the employer is going to get tired of you.

Me, I guess I've been released (without "cause" and with severance packages) 5 times. Two of those were layoffs. And I've quit at least 3 jobs. Things eventually are no longer the right fit. Most of these were before I got into sales training, and learned how to qualify. Nowadays that's much less likely to happen because I won't get into a role that isn't the right fit--back then I'd "take anything". Which is the way just about everyone approaches their job search. They take the first thing that's offered to them.

On Day One of a shiny new job, I know that it isn't going to last forever. And that's the smartest way to think about it. Not in a defeatist way, but a comfortable acknowledgement that I shouldn't bet 100% of my income on this one source. I have a pile of posts about this on one of my sites.

      Landen,

It all depends on why you got fired .

For example, did you get fired because 1.) you were caught moonlighting, 2.) sexually harrassing a co-worker, 3.) you sucked at the job, etc....

Honestly, it depends on the reason.

And ultimately, getting fired can be a great thing because it closes doors you should of never opened in the first place.

However, to get specific to your question, it always hurts, no matter the reason.

The best way to recover from getting fired is to understand why you got fired, and understand that in most cases YOU didn't get fired as a person, as a complete human being.

You got fired because you sucked at doing your job. And once you can separate yourself as a totality from that as your role as worker, you can recover faster.

The problem arises when your identity is rooted in your job. Like a Doctor. A doctor usually says, "I'm a doctor". Or accountants say, "I am an accountant".

When what the doctor should say, "I do Doctoring" or the accountant who should say, "I do accounting".

Who you are and what you do aren't the same. Perhaps in specific moments.

Kobe is more than just a BB player. Allen Says is more than a forum admin. Frank Kern is more than an Internet Marketer.

The key is getting over being fired is to understand why you got fired, understand YOU didn't get fired (the little you did), and increase your skill set in a specific area so you are in demand.

And this is where I want to finish: make yourself desirable.

Most people fear getting fired because they are afraid of the "what happens next". As in having to do interviews.

It's about relationships, just like in email list building. You should always be touch with your professional list of people, giving them updates on what you are doing. And let them know how awesome you are. Because there are plenty of jobs for those with specialized skill. Even in this economy.

      Did this answer your question?

I've never been fired. I left the "rat race" field because I don't want to deal with superiors/bosses who are not smarter/more genius than me. I hate dealing with people who are always acting to be smarter than me when they do nothing but depend on me. Some say that I need to work on my "people skills" so I can blend with these type of guys. Well, I have the option to be my own boss so why would I find ways to blend myself with them? Let them be the ones to blend with my attitude, moods, and principles.

Well I was fired yesterday (my "boss" was reading my personal chats to a friend) for the 6th time since 2008. Two of those times were while truck driving I was in minor fender bender accidents. One time was while student teaching and the other from my first and only teaching job. Both of which boiled down to "bosses" being intimidated by me and trying to break me down. Jealous, that the students adored me and soared in their learning. The first time I was fired was when I was 16. I worked at the theaters that my own brother was and is actually CEO/ President of. What it boiled down to then and always has is; I don't fit in with the Mormon clique here in UT. And my free spirit, strong willed personality intimidates and scares the crap out of these puppet drones! It's very depressing to be yet again looking for a way to survive in this corporate world. If only I didn't need food, I'd just go enjoy living on a warm climate beach!
