Write An Ebook - Stop Making Excuses!

I keep seeing threads about how hard it is to make money online and "Help me!" and "nothing works" and so on. It's distressing. Look, I remember being new to all of this too. The difference is, back in those days we didn't have a Warrior Forum to give us any guidance. You're LUCKY these days! But you gotta use this stuff or it's just a waste of your time.

To that end, here's another idea to get in the game and start making some $$$...

One of the easiest things to create is an ebook. Making ebooks used to be kinda hard, but it's super easy nowadays. If you don't already have it, you should download the free suite of programs from Open Office: http://www.openoffice.org

One of those programs is one called Writer. Just write out the content of the ebook in that program. You can even add images to spice things up (recommended). Then, when you've edited it and are sure you're ready to publish it, there's a button that will turn it into a PDF file in one click! Very nice and easy!

Once you've got it in PDF format, you just need a website to promote the ebook and a way to take orders. You probably already have a Paypal account, so you're halfway home. The only other thing you need is a way to deliver the ebook to your customers after they pay you. That's easy and cheap too! I use E-Junkie: http://www.e-junkie.com

It only costs $5/month and it will sync up very easily with your Paypal account. So customers order, pay you instantly through Paypal, and get instant access from e-junkie once the payment has gone through. Totally hands off for you (after you set it up).

If any of it sounds complicated, trust me - it's not at all. Just take it step by step and don't overthink it.

OK, that's the mechanics of creating and selling. But it's the content part that matters most. You need to devote yourself to researching a popular topic for your ebook. That starts with finding out what people are looking for (information-wise). Learn how to find good niches and keywords if you don't already know how. This is not that hard, so don't let your eyes glaze over. Look in this forum for lots of good info.

Then use the web to research your chosen topic thoroughly. That's the key. Don't just dash off a blah blah blah ebook or you'll ruin your chances before you've really gotten off the ground. Make a big impression with your first one and you'll build a following of loyal repeat buyers. Your 2nd ebook (and all the ones after that) will become easier to both write and sell if you do it well the first time and get some customers who want your next one every time. It builds up and grows over time.

If you really commit yourself to doing this, you will look back in a year and I guarantee your situation will be radically better. But you have to get off your butt and do the work!

Thats good advice for people who may be interested in creating a product.

However, if you are really struggling to get stuff done, or figuring out how to get started, I wouldnt suggest starting off by writing an ebook. For a lot of people, creating a product could in fact turn into a major barrier.

There are easier ways to get a product to sell, such as buying rights or affiliating.

This way you can start honing your ability to sell, which is much more important than creating a product.

    That's my 2 cents.

    Bill.

On the contrary, it's just as easy to do than say. What is slowing him down?

I just finished a 70 page ebook in a week, and it only took me that long because I wanted a STRONG product.

The point of this point is to stop making excuses, and I think you need to really accept that - there's a million reasons it's not done yet, and I'm sure you've been through most of them. Why?

Yes. Seriously, no ebook should take anywhere near 2 months to complete. Unless it's about something highly technical and you know nothing at all about it. I can see in that case where you might spend a lot of hours just researching the topic. But for 99% of ebooks out there, I'd say a couple of weeks is more like it.

One of my favorite sayings (paraphrasing): It's better to get something out there - anything - than to wait until you think something is perfect before you try to sell it.

Great advice, Zeus! I just finished writing my first eBook two days ago and I used Open Office too! I like that you can convert to PDF with one click. It's the first thing I've ever done to try to make money online after being inspired by Pat Flynn's story. I modified a free landing page template that I downloaded from a website and made the little e-Book cover graphic myself! Now I just need to figure out how to sell it since I don't understand keywords too well. I was thinking of uploading it to Lulu.com to get some sales.

The best thing is I have two more ideas for eBooks that I plan to start writing this weekend!

    Hi Zues,

Thanks! I haven't been exploring creating another e-book yet but this gives good motivation. E-books are also good ways of spreading the "good news" and also value online and giving it as a freebie once they've gone through your landing pages is an advantage to build more lists as well.

Yo' Zeus. Your other No Excuses posts got me rolling. As a very raw newbie-newbster, am pleased to report I've got 4 no-excuse Blogger sites dripping already. 2 with Amazon montization and 2 about to get blessed with adsense. I got mired down in perfectionism already (I make a living as a writer and have a QA/QC/corporate/admin/bossy background, but I'm getting over it.) Soooo... dang the torpedoes and naysayers - - -

I hereby commit to another 8 drippy blogs by the end of April and getting an e-book out there by the end of May (alongside even more Blogger microwonders). Yes, I already have an ebook topic selected, but had it in my mind that the project had to wait until I was some sort of pre-guru before I could pursue it. Have done preliminary research... and based on the findings and general gut instinct (I'm old, I get to rely on 'gut') believe the initial offer can be the basis of an empire. < OK, maybe, possibly... but let's not get ahead of myself, awright? >

Would you, Mr. Zeus66, be so kind as to check back in to this thread from time to time? With a comment or so? I've been hanging out here at the WF 'learning' for a long time (and strongly suspect there are a few kindred others who do so as well), mostly absorbing the grit to finally flip the switch to action. Your continued input (or a mere pat on collective heads) would be much appreciated, methinks.

Any other Mind/Success/Power warriors interested in giving me a headslap now and again--just to keep me on track? alanaj? DeonKrey? flemmityskotchel?

    Hi John,

I really enjoy r3ading your posts because they are always so honest and straight forward. Not to plug my own stuff, but that is exactly the reason that I made my WSO. People think that it is way harder than it is to create their own unique and profitable ebooks. With the right type of research and tools the job is actually very easy.

One of the best ways to establish yourself online is to to launch several products a year and then make sure that you are doing the right type of promotion. With the correct formula, anyone can make a living for themselves online. The demand of problems far outweighs the supply of solutions.

Great advice! If you have enough knowledge on the subject I believe you can create an ebook in a week or even in a few days as long as you really know what you are talking about.

I have written two to sell and one to give away and while I have not gotten rich, they have made some income, in fact way in excess of adsense or anything like that. I do not even use ejunkie, I just use paypal and redirect to a site that hosts files for free. You can see by how many people visit versus sales if it is being ripped off and just change the location if you need to. Very simple and you get all the money except for the paypal fees. I personally think your own product is a great way to go if you can write something of use. I used Zohowriter which also makes psf files.

I wrote my first eBook in a couple of weeks. I like to plan my books by braindumping everything I know about the subject on a piece of paper, then turn it into a book.

eBooks need some pretty hefty marketing though, I am finding that out for myself!

If you don't want to sell your eBook, then why not give it away? This can be a good way of getting huge numbers of visitors to your site, which you can monetise in other ways.

Also look on ClickBank - there aren't many eBook niches that sell well!

I'd love to write an ebook and I believe that I could do so. However, my problem continues to be getting traffic. I've spent months trying to get websites with a good SE ranking and got nowhere. I've backlinked until I am blue in the face and still, no ranking.

I hear and I appreciate all of the above comments but until I can figure out how to get traffic it all seems theoretic to me......

      Kind regards,

      John

I'm in the process of writing an Ebook on hypnotherapy. It should be finished in the next few days. The beauty is that you can sell it forever, so you can take time to get your marketing together.

Without knowing exactly what your doing, its difficult to say why you are not getting traffic Higgey. Don't go chasing crappy links from loads of free directories. A few is fine, but don;t go overboard. I've had a lot of success submitting articles to article directories, especially niche directories, and guest posts at relevant blogs. You will get traffic if you write useful articles and persevere with this tactic.
