Are you the smartest person in your group?

I've been delving into Les Brown of late for the first time. He's a big name in the self improvement genre and definitely worth checking out. He seems like a real deal, and I made a blog post about one of his nice quotes I heard that goes,

If you're the smartest person in your group, then you need a new group.
Anyways, if that intrigues you then you'll definitely want to read my post:
Les Brown Quote "If you're the smartest person in your group, then you need a new group."

Enjoy the post and please do leave your feedback here or in the comments on my blog!

Im definitely not the smartest, possibly one of the most productive, and in line with another current thread on here probably the most consistent too - these are more important than intelligence imo - intelligence can be wasted, consistency cant, at worst it would be a learning experience.

Oh, and I love Les Brown, watched a video on him recently about how he landed a job as a radio DJ - after a lot of persistence "You gotta be HUNGRY!"

That is a good video! I also posted about that one on my blog .

Also, I totally agree that being the smartest person is not the most important thing. There is that famous quote that goes ...nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.

I think we all have smart people we know who will attest to this!

    I'm glad I'm not. I totally agree though, that's why I make note of it to seek out the best people I can find in the field and move up the ladder in terms of friendship with anyone who I admire. I even put a blurb about this technique in my new ebook that I'm about to release, "Unleash Your Creativity". Don't mind the shameless promotion >_>;;

Darthdeus, you don't sound arrogant to me, because I know what you mean.

Unfortunately most of the time I feel that I am the smartest person in the group. Is that good? I am not so sure...

When you are the smartest person in the group you need very STRONG leadership skills to lead another group.
What if you are the smartest, but not the best leader? Not strong enough, or not willing enough to lead others. What if you don't need recognition or exposure?
You just sit there and help others, often for free.

To be honest being smart doesn't help me at all...
When you are a smart guy that's OK. I would love to be with a smart guy!
But when you are a woman that's so different. As soon as I feel that the guy isn't as smart as me - I can't help myself but to loose interest in him

Can I share my 'smartness' with someone? And get some leadership skills in exchange?

Being smart doesn't necessarily make you rich.
But that makes you happy, because you know - there's a good chance your kids will be smart as well!

I have same problem with girls. Actually not only girls, but a lot of people. When I talk to someone to make friends, it usually takes me about 10 seconds to realize, that if I had to listen to this person for 30 minutes, my brain would blow up.

It just might be some psychological block in my brain that makes me instantly hate stupid people, who knows

You are probably right, I also find it hard to be around stupid people, so the circle of my close friends was always quite small (but most of them are smart).

When I discovered Internet Marketing I've met hundreds of other smart people at the seminars - so cool! There are no dumb people in this business.

Smart people surround themselves with people who are smarter than they are.
Translated, that means they are not afraid to admit what they cannot do because
they know why. Most people don't make the connection between want, talent and skill.
Will Smith explains it best here.

Nobody is the smartest or the best at everything. Everyone is the smartest or the best at something.
Put them together and you have greatness in all you do. . . . not try to do because now, you're doing
what you want. And that's what you're good at.

"Want" determines "what" you get. Period.

Being smart imho doesn't necessarily mean that you're good at something, that's skill. If you're smart, you can think fast, understand fast, learn fast and you're generally more aware of things around you.

Exactly. Being good at something is a skill, it's learnable.
I don't think you can learn to be smart.

            Definition of SMART:
            • showing mental alertness and calculation and resourcefulness

I think we should make a smart person group : 0

I think you two are right on...being smart really messed with my motivation until I found business...it's actually a game worth playing and it's respectable!! YEAH!

I actually have a huge problem with the whole move on if your smarter concept though...

Don't get me wrong it's important to carefully choose who you're around but my girl is the exact opposite of me...she's not stupid but she's very arrogant...I have no clue how she grew beyond me : p....so intellectually she doesn't do a whole bunch for me but she really excels in friendships and kinda maybe happiness.

hmm...DA. I might take you up on that offer. How good are your brains cells because I'm on the verge of becoming a martyr. : p

The problem when you are the smartest person in a group is that you are quickly bored.

But often if you pay attention you'll find others in the group have their own skills and talents in areas where you don't shine.

If you spend much time with people while thinking you are much smarter than they are - you are either bad at choosing friends or exceedingly full of yourself.

hmmm....something tells me you should learn how to manage teams bro. Like get into management and personality modeling...

You actually have to understand your team and how each individual works and how the work together in an organization...

As a leader you have to ensure everything runs smoothly and everyone's used AEAS.(As efficiently as possible)...and you have to understand what each team member is good at...where they can best be used...not just for technical skills but the leverage points for each team member....THEN YOU TAKE THIS AND PIECE IT ALL TOGETHER TO FORM A HIGHLY EFFICIENT TEAM.

You have to identify the bad placements and the bad employees and replace them to match your team...

Obviously you aren't doing this or you'd have a happy and respectful team.

I say this genuinely of course..if I didn't care I would have never made this post.

      Sincerely,

      Aaryn

Yes, being smart is relative, and it's not always about 'beeing smart how to make money', it's about being smart in general.
There are thousands of super smart people, like University professors, but are they rich?

You don't need to be smart to make money, you just need to follow a proven system, that's all.
    ........................
I've been told that I am smart since high school until I started 'seeing and believing' in it myself. Then few years ago I competed series of personality and career tests online and got some cool results.
I've been also told that I have to work from home and be my own boss (which I already knew), help people, teach others, or do analytical and creative work. And Internet Marketing is my dream come true

However, brains don't always come with other necessary skills (management, leadership) and I envy people who have those skills. Nobody has a 'whole package'.

(Ooops, in my previous post I said that AwesomePossum has got a complete package) I gues I have to change my name from DA to something like AwesomeBlossom, then I would be 'awesome' as well

I don't think anyone would argue you have to be smart to make money....look at all the rich idiots out there XD

I think what that saying means that if you're the smartest in your "group" it means you've got no one in that group to really learn from. That said, even if you're smart you can often learn things even from dumb people.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[2076499].message }}
  • I really appreciate all the positivity, understanding and support for those who are not smart. So I'll be the jerk :p and say that over the years my tolerance for dumb people has dropped to almost zero and I've almost lost the ability to give the patient soothing platitudes that make people feel better about not being smart.

But I'm not a complete jerk, yet... at least I don't think so.

It's a heavy burden being the smartest person in your group. Now I understand human nature and that from time to time we all complete our private dummy missions.

But there are some people who are just dumb, are content being dumb and look for less dumb people to latch on to and suck the bone marrow clean out. ( I'm having issues today). I'm glad to have found this group because the people in my usual social circle are of absolutely no intellectual help at all.

Now I don't blame anyone but myself but sadly I am related to many of these people (in-laws) and to keep the peace I try to play nice. One of my in-laws actually thought I sold drugs because she couldn't understand how I made money without leaving the house. I tried to explain it but I suspect that she still thinks I'm lying. In her mind either you have a recognizable corporate job or you're selling drugs. There's nothing else.

Since I have no tolerance for explaining things more than 32 times, I don't visit often. Actually...I stay away and over the years I think I've had every 24 hour illness imaginable around the holidays. Since I'm the wife it's a lot easier to get out family functions than when you're the husband. Sorry guys it's the social order.

So I want to thank you all for giving me a place where the word entrepreneur still carries it traditional meaning and is not something jobless people say to make themselves feel good. A place and where people understand that you don't have to work at the factory or teach school to make good money. And a place where I'm NOT the smartest person in the group.

I have nothing against dumb people, I just try to keep away from them. I like being around those who challenge me.

When someone asks how do I make money on the Internet I simply say that I have websites, I promote them, visitors click on my ads and I get paid. Very clear, no more questions Everyone knows that advertising costs money so this kind of explanation is perfect to satisfy curiosity of dumb people.

I'm pretty sure I'm in a different league to most other people. It's very worrying for the future. I met a blogger the other day and told her about Hubpages.
