#1 in yahoo...but no traffic

I started a website about 2 months ago, that was targeted with an exact match domain to my keyword. I'm relatively new to IM (this was actually my first site) and later found out that i might have been biting off a little too much for not knowing what it takes to get a site to rank. So, anyways I outsourced some backlinks and in result I ended up on page 3 of Google for my keyword...however, i checked today on yahoo and noticed that i am literally #1 for the same keyword. I Did some research and found out that this term gets searched 1345 times daily(just yahoo) and i am literally still getting NO traffic! Does anyone know why this might be? thanks!

      Hey Rossvegas,
My first thought is that you may have a lot of searches but not from buyers necessarily. Also, the searches may be for a different type of result.
Without having a point of reference, here's what I am thinking about.
If I'm planning on using solar panels, I'm going to be doing a lot of searches on solar energy, solar panels, green energy, and so on. This searching may also be higher because the sun is out and there are others out there thinking the same way I do. I want to save money on my energy consumption. All I'm doing though is searching. No buying!
The searches are for information. Pure and simple.
Now, would I change my mind if I saw a great website that had a compelling offer about solar energy? No. Not necessarily. There is just too much confusion about green energy yet for me to feel comfortable buying anything. I just want the facts.
So, there could be a lot of searches but zip interest.
That's one side of your question.
Another is where you are on the results screens.
Page 3 of a search results is really not bad because it means that you are getting some robots doing a lot of sniffing on your site. But, until you are on page 1 it won't matter.
This kinda reminds me about the thoroughbred horse races. The first place horse gets a million dollars or some such outlandish cash prize. The second is lucky to get enough to pay for a bag of feed. Second or third page ain't bad but won't feed the family.
Keep doing what you are doing because it seems to be working.
Hopefully someone here will give you the push you need to get you to getting some cash buyers ready to part with their money.
      All the best.

If you are logged into yahoo with an account, and you are using the same browser with cookies accumulating, it may be due to the fact that it records what sites you like and will bring up the ones you select at a higher SERP. Try logging out of yahoo and using a different browser or a different computer altogether if possible.

At first i thought this was the case too, but I've tried numerous computers and I appear first on them also.

It could just be because your website matured a bit and google respects older websites more, although 2 months seems like a short time to jump 3 pages.

    I'm afraid I don't know why exactly.

You might need to tell us your specific website and keyword to make sure nothing was overlooked. Maybe do it in a PM if you're worried about others using it.

yeah sure, the keyword I was targeting was "email mass"and the domain is Emailmass.org. Let me know if you see what I'm seeing, at least in terms of me being first in yahoo.

      • But you still should be getting SOME clickthrus -(even if your keyword is not the best as far as what customers are really looking for) it can't just be ZERO hits. Whether they are buyers or not - you are talking about traffic. If a term gets 1300 searches a day - and you are ranked #1 - then you should get about 42% of the searches coming to your site (but thats for google - i'm sure about yahoo - but you still should get a good number of the searches).

How many domains do you have in your cpanel? If you are using Hostgator, and you have more than one domain, make sure you use the dropdown menu and are on the correct domain. Sounds crazy, but I remember one time I viewed my stats and was disappointed - later I found out I was viewing the wrong domain stats

        Hope this helps.

this helps a lot and i actually am using hostgator. Can you explain this further though I'm not sure i completely understand.... I have been using Google analytics as my only source of checking traffic and so far and I've gotten hardly ANY traffic from being in such a good position in yahoo. that's whats kind of baffling me as of now. Thanks so much for the info!

        Hi RossVegas,

one thing that I can think of that I know I do, is that I use a "preview" plugin in firefox that creates a little thumbnail of the site that is in the search results. Your site has the 125x125 adspace images that comes with the theme. I would view this as a "not ready" site and not click the link to it.

My advice is to change those images to images that refer to different posts on your blog (until you have something to promote there). Like for example an image that says "automated list builder- review!" and when they click on it, it will take them to that post.

I also see that you do not cloak your affiliate links and they do not have "nofollow" to them.

Also the Amazon image.... Is there not anything else that you can promote that is more "useful" or "relevant" for your site. If so, that might get you more clicks.

The theme looks good, so all you will have to do now is to add usefull content.

        Good luck!

        Regards

        Jute

I need more info to solve this mystery:
    1) screen capture your Google analytics -showing keyword source and bounce rate etc.
    2) post the URL and the keyword (search term)
    3) Position 1 for a term delivering 1300+ searches per day seems unrealistic for a young site - where did you get this figure from? Are you confusing search volume with natural search
... with the above info I will be able to help rather than guess...

I am just about in the same boat, I rank very high on certain software keywords in yahoo/google, but yet all I get is spammers...or spammer bots...no buyers...there are just so many people selling online these days, even at a high ranking does not guarantee anything...
