Is the Internet the Secret to Happiness?

A May 12 report by British researchers from the U.K.'s Chartered Institute of IT (known as BCS) have found a link between Internet access and well-being. But some benefit more than others from tapping into the information superhighway, including those with lower incomes or fewer qualifications, people living in the developing world and, perhaps most surprisingly, women.
This TIME article claims that the Internet can make you happier
and especially if you're broke.

No wonder when the WF is down the members happiness decrease
as well.

Happiness is an inside job. The internet might be a cause for happiness but get attached to it and watch what happens when it goes out.

That being said using the net has helped to bring me joy. An amazing medium.

I think the internet is just as likely to make someone unhappy as it is to make them happy. Happiness is not found in a technique or a tool, it can only be found within.

As the old saying goes, the best way to be happy is to make someone else happy. And it totally works .

Go back in time a year and find me looking absolutely pissed at my adwords account... Happiness I think not! lol. All joking aside I believe that if you actually search for knowledge on the net your life can be enriched with that knowledge. Whether this leads to happiness is all dependent on your personality.

For me the internet is a gateway to other "worlds" if you will. There are message boards for every interest I have, there are pages upon pages of history that I never read in school -- for education I love the internet and the power it has given me to find what I want when I need to. This naturally makes me happy as I am a curious guy.

The only time the internet makes me unhappy is when it youtube decides it doesn't want to buffer quickly anymore...

Especially if you're broke, because its an escape. I don't know what kind of metrics they used to determine these findings, but I doubt its any real kind of happiness. I'd be surprised if it was anything more than what eating or going to the mall can do to make you happy.

I'm not understanding where you are coming from. As I mentioned in my post I think happiness is dependent on a personality trait, and not what you are doing. I know people who live negative lives. They are negative even when doing the one thing they enjoy doing...

I understand the escapism comment, but then again the internet brings its own host of problems -- namely news being all over the place.

I think happiness is dependent on personality and environment...nature and nurture essentially.

Whether I am right or not, the main issue becomes how we can influence out lives to make us happier. We can change our environment, which includes how, when, and how long to use the internet. See if that affects your happiness. We can also change our personality. Our mind is a powerful beast and we can use techniques and tricks to trick us into a positive and happy mood. Eventually, the goal becomes making this happiness habit.

Is the internet the secret to happiness...in itself, no (in my opinion). But, of course it will affect our happiness in one way or another. The internet is a huge beast with many facets. Its a phenomenal social interaction platform. If that makes you happy, then the internet can make you happier. The internet is a place to harbor and enhance positive opinions we have. Join forums and groups about how we hate the world, and this will probably just stimulate our nagative feelings even more...in this case, the internet makes us less happy.

You can't lump the internet into one category because its such a diverse and dichotic beast. What you can do is objectivity see how you are using the internet and if those things are making you more happy or less. Then adjust your use of the net to focus on the ways that make you more happy!

I think the fact that the internet gives you someone to talk to eliminates a lot of loneliness that makes people unhappy.

In my opinion: nothing, absolutely nothing can make you happy, until YOU decide to be happy.

You can have millions of $, but it depends on you to be happy. Have a look at all those actors&actresses. Quite a lot of them don´t really seem to be happy with their lives, instead they drink, abuse drogs, etc.

So InternetMarketing can make you happy, but it also depends on your mindset.

Bingo!! Nothing outside of you can determine your long term and consistent Happiness. The internet, money, fame, success, blah, blah, blah are all external things that are fleeting in time. You determine how you feel from the inside out.

The internet can bring joy, but it can also bring misery and sorrow. In the end it is what you look up on the internet and what you do online that determines your wellbeing.

Not necessarily only Internet should be coined as the secret to happiness. Research is done only on a selected population data and undergoes too many statistical analysis and on an average scale it's true. Only those things survives and becomes better that creates a value and Internet is one such thing. It made happy many businesses to sell their product online and get revenue, it made writers, software engineers happy by expanding their digital world. It created a new channel of income for all. Even, those who don't do any business online, still earns through saving on post mails, communication costs and that free information which otherwise would have costed them to have it offline.
But, there is a dark side too in forms of cyber crimes...which all are well aware of. Well, the bottom line is Internet is indispensable because it brings happiness in form of knowledge, cost savings and income.

Happiness is a state of mind. If you are lonely and feel unhappy, then you chat with great people on forums like this, you dont feel so lonely therefore you start to feel happier.
It is the same for most areas of life. If you are hungry, you may feel unhappy, then you have food and begin a happier feeling.
Its all in the mind, sometimes we tell ourselves we are unhappy and therefore we are unhappy. I think the internet can bring great pleasure in sooooo many ways, but used in the wrong way, it can cause distress - The same as any media I guess.

If you are not happy with you do online, then it is not happiness. It brings me happiness, as the internet is a world where I can spill all my creativity and release ideas I have in my mind. It is a open space for me to expand. But it can be stressful sometimes.

I think that's pretty cool actually...when you think about it people turn to IMing when they're unhappy or sick of their current situation...I'm pretty sure we can all relate to that so it perfect makes sense that the IMing lifestyle makes us happier.

With that said, how can it not open gateways to our wellbeing? If you IM right you can have an incredibly flexible schedule through IMing..you can live where you want, do the things you want, and whenever you want...it's undoubtably a great lifestyle to be living...I can't think of a better one..especially when I'm helping people along the way.

    Thanks for the thread

I love the power that internet provides... Basically now everything you want can be found on the internet and if you really want it you can get it even for free... Like some other guy said internet can provide both happiness and unhappiness it all depends by human nature... For example i can very easily feel bad because i didn't made already my first sale or i can just find another e-book read it and feel happy and exited. I think that human nature is that you must be surrounded by others humans... I think the great happiness comes from the one near you, the person you love, but that's just my opinion

Yes, the internet has helped me lead a happier life, but I know many that it has ruined. They have become addicted to various online games and even lost their jobs as they were up all night. It's a great tool, but must be used with some care.

Well most people start off happy, thinking that they're going to make $1,000,000 by the next day.

Then they finally realise they have to work, and become sad, which normally leads to giving up.

For the rest, who do actually proceed in working until they see results, they are the ones who enjoy the happiness!

Being happy is your inner thing and it can completely be separated from the outside.

Take two people, one handicaped and the other one with infinite wealth. Who is more happy? If they are both average person, they're probably equally happy, because no matter what the circumstances are, you will get used to them sooner on later.

Probably what makes people happy with the Internet is through a lot of different, easy access to information, meeting experts and even non-experts but still helpful ones to get them going and start their online businesses. This era I can say has been the most active in terms of using the benefits of the Internet and so many successful IMers do arise from time to time.

I think happiness is not something to obtained, but rather it is something that is naturally inside of us and just needs to be unblocked. People spend so much energy trying to "get happy," and to "find happiness" when we already have it. We have had it since we were children. Look at the children - when they are fed, watered, and rested - they are happy...the just crave the essentials and then they are content and enjoy life.

Happiness is relative to life satisfaction. Life satisfaction tends to stem from wealth, health, and relationships. The internet can only substitute these or provide users with distraction, never replace the real world needs.
