    Hi.

I was a smoker for 11 years and quit 3 years ago. I finally reached a point in my life were my health finally became number one. I did not want to be one of those old ladies with the raspy voices.

Quitting was hard. First I used the patch, but than when I did have the urge I used cigars as a "crutch", I wouldn't inhale, I would just use it for the hand mouth thing.

Eventually I stopped enjoying cigars because of the throat burn the next morning, and now I am totally smoke free.

What I found as a deteriant, to keep me smoke free, was running. I can run 3k, when I smoked I didn't have any muscles or like exercising in any way. When I quit I suddenly had all this time, so I needed to do something. So I started running.

It took me a long time to build up to run 3k, and that is the main reason I don't want to go back to smoking. I've just come so far.

So thanks for the post. And people, if you want to quit smoking, you really, really, really, have to want it, and be willing to make total life changes.

I've lost some friends over it (they smoked in their house and I just couldn't visit), and I've gained a bit of weight, but I can out run my former self.

    That's my story.

My spouse still smokes, but he smokes outside. I've become an anti-smoker. I hate cigarettes, I hate smoke, it's funny I used to be that person to someone.

Anyway, if you really want to quit smoking, it's like positive thought, you can do it. But you have to really want to do it. It's easy to quit, but it's hard to keep at it.

Smoking was never something that appealed to me until I started working with special friends who pressured me into it. Gradually the habit formed and got worse over the years until my eldest child, then 4, objected to the smell.

How dare I, his mother, do this to him and there were two younger babies suffering as well. I quit that day cold turkey and was influenced also by an article in the Readers Digest about smoking and cancer. It stated that if after quitting you do not develop cancer in the next 20-30 years then you will be OK. Wow, that was a lifetime.

I am pleased to state that none of my children smoke or take drugs. Of course when you stop you realise how awful people smell who do smoke. Its like pouring a bag of manure over anyone in contact.

While at University my friends father discovered the link between smoking and cancer, Professor Green, from the University of NSW. That did not stop his wife who smoked cheroots or something, small cigars. I never quite got over that.
