Digging around a thrift store, I came across a book with a truly silly title: Psycho-Pictography: The New Way to Use the Miracle Power of Your Mind by Vernon Howard. Needless to say, my BS detector went waaayy up. Fortunately, I took a shot and sprang for the 99 cents.

Holy cow.

This may be the most impactful, to-the-point and useful self-growth book I've ever read. Really life-altering stuff. Despite its name, it's not another "law of attraction" or "get in touch with the cosmos" sort of deal. rather, it's entirely practical and right to the point.

I couldn't recommend it any higher to fellow Warriors looking to build a winning mindset, defeat uncertainty and doubt and simply be happier. thanks Mr. Howard, wherever you may be.

Here's a non-affiliate link to its page on Amazon*:

      My pleasure.

What the book does, in essence, is use little stories -- he calls them mental pictures -- to illustrate each point. The notion is that our unconscious reacts to parables and metaphor better than simple exposition. And yeah, it seems to work out that way.....

Just googled the name Psycho-Pictography and found a free download of it as a .DJVU file.
I thought it was illegal to post copyrighted books online. How can sites like Rapidshare get away with it? It's not fair to the Author or his family.

Vernon Howard is great, a more down to earth Krishnamurti type. I read three or four of his books and excerpted some great quotes into a notebook. He has a dedicated following and some of his stuff is online. Unfortunately, he died prematurely in an auto accident.

I had never heard a thing about him. Saw the book (it's an old copy from the sixties with no dust jacket) picked it up and opened up to a random page. I read two paragraphs and knew I had to have it.

Funny you should say it's not some "get in touch with the cosmos" kind of book, when the only book I picked up from Howard was " the mystic path to cosmic power." It had some great reviews despite the off putting title.

I couldn't finish it because it was used and it smelled like vomit. Unfortunately, I'm not kidding.

Hey Jon, thanks for the recommend. Scientific brain research has proven the subconscious mind communicates in pictures, images and symbols, so this information makes perfect sense.

I'll take your advice and pick it up.

P.S. Amazon had no choice to eliminate its affiliate program in many states due to new U.S. government laws regulating internet income.

YOU (op) know what the job of a little peach tree is. But it is great metaphor for so many noobs in IM just starting out, thinking they can EFFORT themselves to success.

When you combine the PictoGraphs with a SWITCHWORD (From The Secret of Perfect Living by James T. Mangan) you have an unbeatable combination.

I invite you jonb (makes me want to sing a Kingston Trio song)...to take a look at my "logo" at Seeds Of Wisdom sowpub.com and you'll see the PictoGraph represented.

Also, this book was one of the inspirations for my Square One Workshops, and if you have a minute, take a look at the Master PictoGrigm and you'll see much of Vernon Howard involved.

I encourage you to get the Mangan book, "The Secret of Perfect Living" and match up SWITCH WORDS with the pictographs. You'll be amazed.

    gjabiz

The SQ1 can be seen at sowpub.com/sq1

"The world has nothing of real value to give you because it does not exist. Because it does not exist as a reality, because it is illusory, it has only illusory and worthless rewards for you. " -- Vernon Howard

While his philosophies are interesting in their syncretism, I am less than impressed with his willingness to base his conclusions on premises that are either false or bald presuppositions that argue against reality. The world does exist, as reality. We all live that way. So if that is one's belief, and one develops a philosophy based on that belief, that person's actual manner of living will necessarily counter their absurd philosophy.

His books are great for thinking new and unconventional things, much like James Redfield's "The Celestine Prophecy." But they are, in reality (no pun intended) still fiction, even if they don't claim to be.

So if that is one's belief, and one develops a philosophy based on that belief, that person's actual manner of living will necessarily counter their absurd philosophy.
My take on this sort of philosophy is that it's not claiming the world is illusory on a physical level -- it's that our perception of the world makes it illusory. It's an essential concept of Buddhism - typically called "Emptyness"

In short -- what we view as a tree isn't really a tree. The word "tree" is something we invented. The tree doesn't know it's a tree (in the same way your dog doesn't know he's a dog). Same goes for words like green, leafy, bark or concepts like shady or evergreen or whatever. It goes further. Most of us like trees. Most of us don't like weeds. But there's nothing inherently likable or unlikable about these things. It's our perception that places these things in one camp or the other.

Consider this: You look at the weeds outside your front door and think "gack! I hate those ugly things! I gotta get rid of them." Then you look at the old oak tree in the yard where your kids played and you feel a swell of happiness.

Along come someone who just arrived from, oh let's say, the Sahara desert. They've lived all there all their life and have never seen vegetation. They see the weeds (although they don't know they're called weeds or even how they got there) and think "my, these little sprouty things are charming! What beauty!" Then they look at the tree and think "what is that giant ugly and scary thing!"

So who's interpretation of the world is correct, yours or the visitors? Or is it possible that neither of you are viewing the world as a true reality?

It's our interpretation of the world that makes it an illusion, because we are incapable of viewing it without conceptualizing it. Thus the world, as we know it, is an illusion.

What's the practical value of thinking this way? It's not to discount the world and pretend everything is a dream. It's to be able to understand that "through our thoughts, we make the world". It's actually a powerful and liberating notion -- if you change the way you perceive the world, you can create a much happier place to be for yourself. The opposite is, of course, true, as the life of any miserable person will attest.

Interesting - I picked up this book several years ago (along with a signed copy of a Milton Erickson book) for about 50 cents (each) at a local booksale. I never got the chance to read it all the way through, but will pull it off the shelf and do so now. Thanks for the reminder!!

Thanks SteveSki for the video links, too!! I'm always fascinated by hearing an author in person versus just reading his words.

BTW - gjabiz - interesting combination. Have been reading Mangan's book recently and while I'm not totally "sold" on his ideas, there is merit to the concept of using words (made-up or otherwise) as anchors and triggers.

Thanks for commenting. Um, ahh...(he stammers some more), er...

These books were part of a FOUNDATION which was put into place as far back as 1959. Now be patient.

When I was 9, a guy gave me two books. Elmer Wheeler's; Tested Sentences that Sell and Elmer Leterman's The Sale Begins When the Customer Says NO.

It was a beautiful Saturday morning in Tallmadge, Ohio and I was asked to pick some flowers in a field (a former nursery gone to seed) by a neighbor. I picked way to many. She suggested I sell them to other women.

A guy washing his car saw me, found out I was "selling" and started to mentor me. Basically, he told me to tell the ladies that answered the door about the SPIDERS, SNAKES AND MICE in the field.

I WITNESSED changes in physiology and behavior after using these "magic words" on these women. I was sold on the idea of WORDS being used to impact, influence and persuade people.

So began a life long search for other "magic words". At 15 I met Fran Renner, one of the great early hypnotherapists of the 60's. And a study of hypnosis began.

At 19 I was studying at the Edgar Cayce Center in Virginia Beach, and later in San Francisco Metaphysical Workshop run by Russell Thomas.

WHEW, thanks for staying with me. Let me bottom line this post...

I've seen the power of WORDS being used on other people. It made sense to me WORDS used on ourselves could also have great power. So, I've been studying WORDS for 51 years now.

YOU are right. Anchors, triggers, stimuli/responses. Attach a visceral metaphor to a Picture, and the words can take on incredible power.

I'll reduce one of the lessons which may have the most relevance in this forum to:

EMOTIONALIZED THOUGHTS, PICTURED AS COMPLETED REALITY, SOON ARE (or could be).

Some might say that is part of THE SECRET.

It is one leg of a three legged triad.

Won't bore you with the other two.
