The Secret - How Much Do You Believe?

Hi all,

I've been reading The Secret, and now I'm watching the movie of the book. This is very interesting stuff! How much do you believe in it and the law of attraction? Have you seen hard evidence of what you wish for turning up like the book reports? I've tried thinking of specific things I want to attract, but I'm not sure it's working yet.

Personally I found The Answer much better written. I love the idea of Vision Boards, and I'm pretty sure they work.

Since I read The Answer I found my mind was coming up with dozens of business ideas, and I feel I now have more than enough to realise my dream of giving up the day job and living anywhere. One thing I've noticed is that I only really have my best ideas when times are tough (I started my first Internet business when I lost my job way back in '02), I don't know if this is usual.

I'd like to apply the knowledge to my relationships, so I feel I need to do more reading in this area in order to find myself a MissGUID :p.

I do know that the health chapter in The Secret is onto something (yes the mind really can control your health), but I found that this aspect is much better explained by Dr Sarno in The Mindbody Prescription. Maybe it's like the Law of Attraction, but the secret of understanding Dr Sarno's powerful techniques is that they only work if you believe they will work. This is the thing most people find difficult, because the subconcious is very childlike, and getting it to believe things is no mean feat.

Thanks everyone!

As for the business schemes, like for having good health, it sounds like if you believe it can be done, it can be. The way I understand it is that a belief is a thought that you think consistently. I think changing a belief usually requires some work - work thinking about the thing you want.

If there is something I am experiencing that I don't like I have probably "created" it by the way I think. The same goes for the things I do like in my life. I feel more in control of my life once I realize I can control the way I think and feel. Basically I look for ways to feel good. I have had some success turning things around in my life by focusing on believing in success, more money or better relationships for instance.

I also saw that video when a friend loaned it to me a while back. I really believe it to be true, but find it a little hard to put into practice for some reason. We have found it to work for small things, like believing a parking place will be available for us close to the front door of the WalMart when we go there. Is that coincidence or is it our minds controlng things? Who knows, I want to believe it it our minds.

The one thing that sticks in my mind from that video is the fellow who was paralyzed and was then able to walk. I have kidney disease and recently started dialysis. I told everyone that I would not need do go on dialysis, but here I am. Did I not believe hard enough? I would still like to believe that I can still achieve the resurrection of my kidney function, because dialysis is not a hell of a lot of fun.

But, all in all, I do believe in the concept.

IMO, they are dancing around something amazing, but they are still not quite spot on. I'll admit it was one of the earlier encounters I had that got me from where I was in the past, to understanding life a lot more and how to succeed, and the quantum mechanics behind all things.

If you are logically minded then the secret is not the best place to learn these ideas from. It would help you to read The Edinburgh Lectures by Judge Thomas Troward who was a student of comparative theology and philosophy and a brilliant logician. If you find his language a bit too intellectual, the the books of his student Genevieve Behrend are much more accessible.

To get proof that these ideas are true you must apply them in your own life since they are dependant on your private thoughts so if you look to someone elses life all you will see are the effects and not the causes and you will always be able to ascribe some other cause to the outcomes, such as "luck" or coincidence.

The Edinburgh Lectures can be downloaded free at universallawstoday

Genevieve's books are also being given away free by Christopher Westra of Holographic Creation

I have been using these techniques for twenty years now and can personally attest to the power they have to change your ideas about how the universe actually works.

Sorry. because this is my first post I am not allowed to post the links.

I hope this reply has been useful to you.

I have complete faith in the law of attraction. Like somebody else said on a previous post. they are dancing around something amazing, but they are still not quite spot on.
Two years ago I became ill and had to look for a new way of earning a living. I, like a lot of complete newbies fell into the information overload trap, and spent my time getting nowhere in the Internet marketing world.
I came across the Law of attraction and began to practise it. The whole concept made sense to me from the start.
Now I have recovered from my illness and have moved from the UK to the south of France with my laptop. Which of course is my business.
I have a long way to go before I have completed my journey, but each day takes me nearer to my visions.
Belief is everything. If you believe, then you commit, and that to me is the key. Hope is the enemy, and I feel that is where a lot of people go wrong.
They hope it will work and that is not the way forward. I belief in this so much that I may branch out and start teaching these concepts to a wider audience.

Wow, one week later and I am starting to believe the LoA!

I tried a test. I tried to imagine finding a 10p coin in the street. 10p coins are quite rare to find, so i thought this was an excellent test. I haven't yet found one, but I did find a 5p .

But what was much more convincing is that I am trying to find out why some of my webpages get tremendous numbers of visitors. If I knew, I could clone them and make day job giving up money. On Thursday I discovered most of the reason why. But one question remained. I asked myself that question a few times, and less than 24 hours later I found the answer hidden as a throwaway remark by some poster on another forum I frequent. Very spooky!

My technique will have to wait till I write a WSO, but in the meantime I am much more convinced that the LoA does work. I'm still looking for that 10p coin though!

Personally, I don't believe any of it. You may attract what you work towards, you don't attract what you think about. The LOA is not a law, it is a marketing idea developed to sell people books, DVDs and seminars. The Secret was based on Wallace Wattle's book the Science of Getting Rich, but excluded the most important chapter - Chapter 12 Efficient Action. Why? Because you can't sell action, but you can sell "thinking to attract". People would be much better off with the Wattles original book in which he urges people to study it and forget everything else. At one point in my life I did and had amazing results. The ebook I wrote is really my take on TSOGR and turns it into a practical method to use, however, if you follow Wattles and combine it with written goals, action plans and true feedback you will be amazed. None of this is meant to suggest being positive is not important, it is, but you also must be realistic about where you are and build from there.

By the way the SOGR is free all over the internet and was the book Rhonda Byrne stumbled across when she was having problems in her life. Why not go to the source?

Where's the line between thinking and action though? We are all energy, as is thinking, as is action.

Of course it works. It's always working. It's the way of the Universe. I think we take ourselves a little too seriously when we think we are so special as to be detached from that. We are what the Universe is...vibrating energy. Simple as that.

The Law of Attraction has been taught for centuries by Wallace Wattles and others which Wallace Wattles and many others, but I think in The Secret she definitely left out the most important part of of LOA which is taking action.

So many people saw the video when it came out and thought they could stare at a dollar bill and make a million (including many I knew personally). It drove me nuts!

Thinking and doing have to go hand in hand for the LOA to be effective.

          Influence

Rhonda Byrne told a Newsweek interviewer that her inspiration for creating the 2006 hit film The Secret and the subsequent book by the same name, was her exposure to Wattles's The Science of Getting Rich[14]. Byrne's daughter, Hayley, had given her mother a copy of the Wattles book to help her recover from her breakdown.[15] The film itself also references, by re-popularizing the term The Law of Attraction,[14] a 1908 book by another New Thought author, William Walker Atkinson, titled Thought Vibration or the Law of Attraction in the Thought World.

During the opening sequence of the DVD, Byrne is opening a chest and pulling out a book. On the cover of the book is a post-it note that says: "Momma, this book will help. xoxo." The book she opens is Robert Collier's The Secret of The Ages. If Wattles's book was more important Byrne could have very easily had herself opening that book and showing the first page of it. She did not. The Secret of The Ages is more in tune with The Secret than the other book. Just reading the title of the book tells you so.

A terrible screen shot of the page from the DVD:

Hmmmm.... So when Joe Vitale talked about taking inspired action, this is not action? When they talk about making vision boards, is that not a form of setting goals? Many times in the movie and book they discuss feedback, maybe not in the context of literal measurements, but in the context of feedback from feelings, and what you see reflected in your real life.

While The Secret does not go into detail on many of these items, it does not ignore them either. I don't believe any one of the people in the movie, or Rhonda, believe success is accomplished through thought alone, but is accomplished through a proper set of beliefs, the proper mindset, and taking inspired action (quickly and massively), which again, was mentioned many times in the movie.

My point is that action is not the cornerstone of the book. I could not find much discussion on action. Marketing people got a hold of the "concept" and repackaged it with an emphasis on attraction, manifesting etc. Like I said, it is hard to sell action and work, there is not as big an audience for it as there is for manifesting and attracting. Much like the exercise industry, shortcuts and miracle programs and drugs sell better than hard work.

What I have to offer here might not be the most popular opinion on the Warrior Forum, but it is carefully considered and sincere.

"The Secret" is an incomplete, hyped-up, and partially misleading introduction to some powerful concepts and techniques.

I think of a comparison with McDonald's yogurt, fruit, and granola parfaits. These are not the worst food from McDonald's. If it never occurred to you that you could choose between burgers and yogurt, these parfaits might help expand your horizons. In the same way, The Secret isn't the worst of pop psychology or spiritual growth insight. But they both are merely above average for their type of junk food. Neither of them is fine dining or even a good choice for every single day.

When they're the most convenient thing to grab in a hurry, they're both not all that bad for an occasional snack. They both might be very useful steps up from even less nutritious choices.

Neither the McD's parfaits or The Secret are very substantial choices for lifetime nutrition. To get that, you need to add some other, higher quality ingredients. Just a few examples of books, every one of which has at least ten times the value, depth, insight, and immediate applicability of The Secret:

    About leadership and visualization:
Napoleon Hill - Law of Success in 16 lessons
Earl Nightingale - Lead the Field (audio series)
Dan Kennedy - No B.S. Guide (series)

For thinking more clearly and handling emotions better:
    Maxwell Matz - Psycho-Cybernetics
Riso and Hudson - Personality Types (Enneagram)
    David Viscott - Emotional Resilience
Dan Baker - What Happy People Know

If your main concern is money and business:
Henry Ford - My Life and Work (I'm referring to his ideas on innovation and business structure, NOT his later descent into paranoia)
Warren Buffet - annual reports for Berkshire Hathaway
Steve Jobs - Stanford commencement address 2005

To explore metaphysical and spiritual concepts without the selfish shallowness promoted by The Secret:
Douglas Hofstadter - Goedel, Escher, Bach
Viktor Frankl - Man's Search for Meaning
Pema Chodron - When Things Fall Apart
    Kahil Gibran - The Prophet
Miguel Ruiz - The Four Agreements

The Secret is the kids' wading pool, with neon spiral waterslides and a teeter-totter. Fun for a splash, but there's no deep end.

I think that the Secret is within each and every one of us and all we have to do is to tap into that. Whether it is a higher power that you believe in or Jesus Christ. Everyone was born with the secret but maybe does not realize that. Tap into whatever it is in you that allows you to realize that you have it within you to do and accomplish anything you want in life. The problem is that people walk through life not knowing that they already have the SECRET!

The Secret is poorly written IMHO, although I'll overlook it at my poorly written web pages are usually my best earners in IM. I'm glad I read The Answer first.

I like the idea of Vision Boards, although I tend to carry them around in my head rather than make them out of old magazines.

You can simple do an experience regarding LOA, just try to be as negative as you could be, then you'll have negative events happen in your life for sure!
In contra, we can be as positive as we could be, and at least we can reduce the negative event happening to us and we can feel much better.
Whether you would like to attract positive things or negative things, the choice is yours.

One of the great myth regarding LOA is, people do not know what they really want. Therefore, the things they attract has no meaning.

I'm more a believer of goal setting and put those plan into action, then achieve it.

Kin, could you explain your point of view some more?

I'm confused about whether you think the whole LOA/positive attitude thing is really important. Or do you think it's more important to design an action plan and take action, if you don't feel inspired?

      Hmm, interesting...and yes, controversial view...

I know a lot of successful people who would stand up and say how powerful a contributor visulisation and affirmation has been to their success.

And these successful people certainly don't preach about it, so it would be hard to accuse them of trying to 'con' us into anything. (ie. they don't really gain anything from telling us that)

And lastly, I believe there is a difference.

Throwing coins into a wishing well is simply that - wishing for something.

The law of attraction encourages action, which is completely different to just wishing.

Interesting view though, and in a way i understand where you're coming from.

The self-help industry can take advantage of the many people that decide not to implement any changes in their life or take action. But at the end of the day, if they just want to consume information and not use it...that's their prerogative.

Jazbo, can i refer you to my reply to Protected. If you decide that the 'LOA' does not work then it will not work, which may be to your disadvantage since you will have no power over the creations of your unconcious thoughts. The only way to prove this to yourself with any certainty is to suspend your beliefs for about three weeks and use one of the many 'LOA' methods out there. If after this time nothing has changed (very unlikely) then go back to your old belief system. A word of warning here, you cannot fool the universe, if you only pretend to believe you will get no results.

When you say this is only a marketing gimmick it is worth remembering that this information is free in many places on the internet.

I do not wish to be argumentative so please feel free to ignore everything i say if it is not to your liking.

PS In 1979 I created a business with profits of more than £1500 a week in less than two weeks, that certainly helped to prove it to me!

As a strictly rational person and also a pedant, I find it quite hard to believe it. I do oppose the very concept of letting the "universe" do the stuff for me.

On the other hand, there is a simple explanation why it might "work" - by setting your mind on one task, you may activate the unexplored and subconscious parts of our brain, which might just do the difference.

If you're up for a highly technical pre-foundation of "the secret" you will love "The Master Key" http://missionstudy.net/The Master Key System.zip

WARNING -I thought this to be a highly technical look at the purpose, process, and outcome of thought. The text teaches and explains. It took me a whiile but I got used to the level of detail. There is an excercise at the end of every chapter.

I'm a believer of law of attraction - the major difficult part of it is getting crystal clear in your mind eye exactly what it's you want. And, we all face this difficulty and that's why attraction is not at its best.

I've been in this self-improvement LoA, visualization, affirmations, etc.
for almost 3 years and honestly, I never got it to work. It was pure
BS in my opinion at that time. Until 2 months ago, I started taking an
interest in "programming the subconscious mind" concept. I started
      using subliminal recordings.

I am currently using a recording for winning the lottery so that I can
add funds to my IM venture. So far, I'm getting consistent results and
won a total of $22 dollars in consolation prizes. Last week I got 2 out
of 6 numbers correct. This week, the highest I got was 4 out of 6 then
it dropped to 1 then it went to 3. I'm waiting for the result of tonight's
      game.

So in conclusion, this concept of "Programming the Mind" or rather,
"Re-programming the Mind" is working for me.

I haven't won something from the lottery in the past and I played
almost everyday. Now, I'm just playing 4 times a week at the most
but the result is satisfying for me.

Do you believe it?? What the mind of man can believe it can achieve. That sounds cliched but the principle is: reality is what you make it to be. If you believe it then it will happen, skeptics might call it self fulfilled prophesy but the mind will directly affect the outer world.

I don't believe the mind affects the outer world. I do believe there is no harm to a positive attitude and the feel good mindset it puts you in.
