Insomnia Can Be Your Best Friend.....Here's Why

Random, isolated cases of insomnia don't have to be your enemy.

I do some of my best work when experiencing insomnia. I recently worked 39 straight hours - save a 2 hour nap - when dealing with a bout of sleeplessness.

- Working during a different time frame can be stimulating.

- You can work in silence.

- You can generate more creative ideas in this environment.


In my case the cause behind insomnia is either anxiety or inspiration. Either way there's something running through my mind or an energy in my body which prevents me from sleeping. I've learned to channel this energy to create great stuff.

Rather than toss and turn in your bed or turn on the TV try focusing your energy. Anxiety can be an awesome driver. This feeling has driven me to make powerful break throughs. In the same respect when you're inspired, stay that way. If you go without sleep for a night while creating non-stop honor that feeling. Many geniuses experienced frequent bouts of insomnia because they were busy creating brilliance.

Now I am not advising you to force insomnia on yourself, nor am I saying that long term insomnia is good for you. You need your sleep on a consistent basis. Don't down the Red Bulls or chug coffee late at night, keeping yourself up by force. Sleep is food for your mind. Watch how quickly things break down in your mind and body when you don't get the proper amount of sleep.

Just try to use your periods of sleeplessness effectively.

    Hahahaha sounds a lot like me!

    Its not 3:18am. Im not tired either. Its also nice and quiet so I can focus.

    Also, it may be due to your brain frequencies lowering, which means creativity. When you sleep your brainwave activity goes down to several hertz and just before sleeping a little above that.

    I also recall a book about learning languages very quickly which said something similar.

      Great advice. I really like the idea of inspiration-driven insomnia. In my case, it takes a lot of mind over body determination to make my ideas materialize. Yes, I don't have insomnia but I suffer from restless sleep because my mind is still working while I sleep. Hence, I still don't feel refreshed after sleep. I wish to possess the same kind of discipline like you have guys.

    Well I'm glad to know I'm not alone. It's 2:14am now and I'm wide awake working. I'm up to at least 4 or 5 am, and sleep til 1pm or 2pm. It's just my routine and my cycle I guess.

    I used to fight it, with Tylenol PM, and all types of different sleep aids, but now I embrace it, and enjoy the silence, the peace, and the fresh night air. I get TONS of work done, I get alot of new ideas at this time of night as well. Plus I'm one of the few with a view of the sun rise over the mountains. It's a beautiful think at 5:15am

    I must be mad!! I dont suffer from insomnia but I wake real early and start at about 5.30am. Like you said quiet, no interruptions, focused!!! Cool

    Good feedback guys, thanks for sharing.

    I feel that finding your flow is important too. Everybody on the thread is doing a fine job listening to their body. I was up at 3:30AM writing this post the other night. Usually I wake at 7 AM but set the alarm for later because I was up. It's all about listening and not being rigid when your body speaks to you.

    Sometimes I do the Night Owl thing for days or weeks after experiencing insomnia. Other times it gets me on an earlier sked as I hit the sack at 8 the same night, waking at 4 or 5. Either way I'm always listening to my intuition.

    I also have insomnia frequently these last weeks, during these insomnias, i can't stop thinking, thinking about all differents things like my life in general, thinking about people i know and also about some business on Internet and sometimes, i have a good idea and write it on a paper for tomorrow or sometimes i can also get a new idea of story for my novel, inspiration. <3

    I too often work during the night when insomnia strikes. I wish I could embrace it but my life exists during the day (job, child, etc) and can't sleep late to make up for lost sleep. Ho hum...

    One Go activities are the way to proceed at times. When on a roll there's no need to stop unless your body or intuition tells you otherwise.
