Putting yourself in State to make a decision

I've studied pretty extensively Neuro Linguistic Programming and have come across some pretty effective tools. In learning NLP, I became aware of emotional states. To my amazement, (I was having all kinds of these epiphanies) we can actually influence and even directly control our states. I remember growing up thinking that moods just happen, and it kind of seems that society itself (at least in America) is a bit conditioned to think that we have no real influence over our moods, our states and thus how we feel. As I started to really experiment with changing states, I began to realize that the tools in NLP really worked and that anyone can then create variations of those tools to influence their own states! In doing so, I've found that making key decisions, even ones that aren't that significant, in a peak state, really influences the kind of decisions we make. Let me give you an example. Every single day, I do an exercise of some sort. It wasn't always like that though, I had to really try to get motivated to exercise and sometimes, it didn't work (I wasn't doing it effectively) Finally, I discovered that for me, making the choice to put myself in a pretty intense place by radically changing my body, slapping my hands together, stomping on the ground and taking some serious breaths, worked. Within seconds, I was ready to run. Now the decision was easy... RUN, Bahhhh!!!

Another powerful time you can change your state is if you have a habit that you don't particularly like, something that may be harming you in your life or creating negative circumstances. Right as you're about to engage in doing the thing, following the pattern, consciously decide to change your state by either changing your body or interrupting the mental pattern you're running by directing your mind to something else consciously. Engaging in reading an article, or thinking about something that gives you pleasure in your life will work in many cases! In my experience, using your body and making it intense is the quickest way to change what's happening in your brain. For all things success, goals and achievement, heck, even if you want to break a tendency, (you're reaching for the cookies or the ice cream) CHANGE YOUR STATE!!! You'll be in a more resourceful place to make a different decision, or so that's been my experience. You?

Good Question! You could put yourself into a peak state while you think about it. The point is, if you're procrastinating on something, chances are when you're thinking about it, your shoulders are slumped, you're not breathing heavy, and you may be in a sort of relaxed physiology. If you change the signals you send to your brain while you are thinking about something, you drastically change the way you think about that something!

What helps me not to procrastinate, or to take action on things I know I should do, is the fact that I've identified "doing," and "acting" on something, anything, as something that puts me into a high performance place in my mind. So in associating some kind of reward with doing the thing.. a reward that is BETTER than not taking the action or doing the thing, you tell your brain that you actually want to do it.

    Hi Ryan,

I have had similar experiences. I feel that changing the body posture, slowing down, etc changes your state.

I slow everything down from how I walk to how I talk. When in slow-motion I can easily observe when tension builds in the body. I can locate the spot and release the blockage.

I heard a meditation CD recently stating that stillness in the body helps to still the mind. This was my inspiration to work with improving my mind-body relationship.

    Thanks for sharing your insight.
