Tony Robbins & The Secret

I've gone through Tony's great program Get The Edge. And the first step of 7 steps is to get disturbed. We can't change if we don't get disturbed enough, and do something about it. GET HONEST WITH YOURSELF. Anything which can make you move - Tony's words in Get The Edge

He also saids
- make it worse then it already is
- pain is your friend use it for drive
- turn the feeling of being disturbed into DRIVE

This is just the first step, out of 7. The other steps are creating a massive action plan, RPM, changing limiting beliefs, adding new beliefs, set the game up to win and finally take massive action.

I've also been watching The Secret and reading a bit of Think And Grow Rich.
Where would you apply the law of attraction in Tony's 7 steps.
Wouldn't the law of attraction be in confliction with getting honest with yourself and becoming disturbed. It would be interesting to get someones take and perspective on this.

I believe after you get disturbed you then apply the law of attraction to what you want and desire. Then apply the law through your plan and action. If that makes sense.

Cheers,
Chini

    Chini,

My thoughts are that the first step in manifesting is acknowledging exactly where you are - As they say, if you don't know where you are, how are you going to be able to follow a map to where it is you want to go?

Agreed that if you keep playing your sad little violin saying how bad things are, you're making things worse and directing your focus miserably, but I think that by (momentarily - whether that be for a few minutes or a few hours or days at the longest) focusing on your problems creating a state of disturbance within your emotional being, you create a drive within yourself to change. THEN, once the drive is built, the next step is to find things that inspire and build passion within you and to start making them real for yourself - whether it be through visualization, goal setting, etc.

... hope this helps - I love talking about this stuff!

Tony Robbins is on record saying the message of the secret is not the one he espouses. Tony is about taking massive action toward your goals. Forget the LOA it is not real, can't be proven. Set goals and take action toward them. Focus on what you can do and control and take responsibility for your life. This will take you further than anything else.

But isn't Tony's favorite book Think and Grow Rich. If he's slamming the secret, isn't he slamming a major part in Think and grow rich. He's probably slamming the secret on its basis that its not the "be all and end all" to personal success. And its missing alot of other "laws" to gain success.

Sun Tzu talks about what he calls "death ground".

What this means is that an army will fight at its best when it has no where else to go, when it must fight and win or else die.

Robert Greene in "The 50th Law" also talks about it too and mentions periods in history when generals have deliberately put their army on "death ground" by destroying escape routes etc.

What this means is that if you want to give yourself the best chances of success give yourself no alternative but to succeed, get rid of any 'plan b's.

Absolutely, theres also the law of action which needs to be applied.

I think law of attraction is just one law of many other different laws. The law of attraction is in think and grow rich, but that book also has 12 other laws/steps to riches.

I highly recommend the 50th law. Great book, actually i have the audio version. I listen to it while at the gym. My favorite is chapter 8, Respect the Process.

If your into internet marketing (or any other area of business) and are trying ways to avoid or hate the tedious/small and slow progression to success, i highly recommend listing/reading this chapter.

As Jim Rohn saids “Be a student, not a follower.”

Personally I feel Brian Tracy says it best (though robbins and hill are legendary)

Picture your ideal life in every aspect , what would it look like?
Learn the proper steps you need to take to make that vision true
Then start taking the proper steps to making your life that way.

There will be road blocks "im on the pursuit of happiness and i know, not everything that shines is always gonna be gold"

    Simple.

Law of attraction (the secret) can be motivating to some but IMHO also a little misleading.

Lots of personal development people are on different sides of the fence, people like Robbins,Covey, and Hill are all sending a different message. Some work better for certain people.

Hey op, As I read your thread, I have finished listening to tony robbins time of your life, and I would like to tell you that I have gone through almost every tape program that tony has on his site (including the edge).

I have only one word for him "Awesome".

Three years back my life was a huge mess so I started to read self help stuff and the first thing I came across was LOA and my eyes twinkled like a two year old( I thought man this is the holy grail).

For two years straight I read every book and tape program I could get my hands on and made thorough notes of it.

I tried it, but somehow I couldn't manifest anything, now I am not saying LOA doesn't work but it didn't for me at least.

That was the time I came across "Personal power" so I decided to give it try, and you know the next thing that happened; I finally QUIT SMOKING just after applying the stuff within 4 days and I was just on the day 4 (I couldn't quit smoking for 3 years)

That's when I realized that this is some real ****.

Though I have not mastered his stuff but I am really positive if anyone applies it with full dedication can turn anything into absolute GOLD.

My verdict: Screw LOA Stick with Tony

What do you believe the law of attraction to be? It is a method of aligning your thoughts towards your desires, correct?

The in depth teachers, Jack Canfield as an example, would never tell you to sit still and only think about it. They will tell you to be taking massive action just as much as Tony Robbins does.

Becoming disturbed does not really conflict with the law of attraction. Are you supposed to get disturbed and focus on the bad things, or are you supposed to get disturbed and focus on the solution and the way out of it? You are working to use emotion to create energy and focus towards your desired outcome. Even Tony tells you it is imperative to know the end result you want, and to keep the result in front of you. (Isn't that really a strong piece of the law of attraction?)

The law of attraction is not meant to be a sit back, place your order, and wait for delivery job. It is meant to be, place your order, start moving towards it, watch for opportunity to unfold, follow your intuition, leap into action whenever a door opens, and keep moving system.

In one of Joe Vitale's books he talks about first creating a list of all the things you do not like in your life and then flipping them to what you really would rather have. This is once again in flow with Tony's idea. You are disturbed and agitated about what you do not want, use it to determine what you do want, and then start moving towards it, looking for doors to open.

Even Esther Hicks in her books about the Law of Attraction discusses the same things. Sometimes knowing what you do not want is the springboard to making new decisions and moving forward. You are supposed to take your emotions as energy and feedback to guide you towards where you want to go.

I have read and listened to man of Tony's products, and never have I understood Tony to want us to continue to be working in a disturbed, agitated mode. He wants us to use our distaste, disturbed, and agitated feelings to create energy we redirect into positive attitude and action. Do not stay disturbed, use the energy to get yourself in motion, creating a positive attitude and movement.

I'm sure what Tony does not believe in the Law of Attraction is the attitude of sitting and waiting. Often the fact of moving, taking action, making adjustments, learning, and using the opportunities presented to us, or recognized by us through the Law of Attraction is ignored in many elementary teachings.

If you want to hear someone teach the Law of Attraction the way it is meant to be done, grab some of Jack Canfield's teaching. His ideas and methods would quickly bridge the disconnect you see between Tony and "The Secret".

The thing about Tony Robbins is he encourages you to use PAIN as a big motivator. I think that's unnecessary and even harmful sometimes. I think it's much better to have a strong appreciation for the prize ahead of you as well as a loving acceptance for where you are right now. So The Secret + Sedona/Release Technique + Bob Proctor would be best I think. The Secret is just an entry-level law of attraction product anyway. It's great, but should be no one's final word on it.

Tony doesn't wants us to work in disturbed state. You have got it all wrong. He just wants us to realize the what we are currently doing is not working and we should do something about it.

Apart from that from my understanding of NLP there are some people who are strongly away (fear is bigger motivator for them) so painting a picture of total happiness would not work for them.

Tony himself admitted once that he does not like to get motivated by pain, so I guess since everybody is different he wanted to give every tool to get to work.

I'll keep on praising him because I just love him.

IMO - Tony's advice has changed over the years. It started off with pure NLP and from there he really incorporated a lot of other things into it - and his advice and strategies have also changed somewhat.

He has been critical of the Secret and even "positive thinking". If you listen to what he's saying it's that people can use these tools to live in denial (day dreaming your life away instead of taking action, denying problems by simply 'trying' to be positive).

Tony would say that the Secret isn't "the" Secret but "a" Secret and that visualization on it's own or without focus and purpose and action is pointless.

If I recall correctly, Tony Robbins uses both pain and pleasure to reach your goals.

He says to associate no change with massive, unbearable, immediate levels of pain and change with massive, extraordinary, immediate levels of pleasure.

    Hello.

The thing to remember about "Law" is that it is impersonal and unfailing. Gravity, here on this plane(t), treats everybody the same whether they believe in it, or not. Also, Law is a product of the Higher Mind/Force/Organizing Principle that established it.

That being said, if there is a Law of "Attraction", then it would produce in a person's experience whatever they strongly resonate with. So, if you believe that the use of pain as a motivator will bring you success, then it will. In this instance, pain is not your destination (focus), it is your vehicle (means to an end).

If you believe strongly that "hard work" is the key to success, then, unless you also believe that "no good deed goes unpunished", you will only succeed if you "work hard".

If you believe that the continual affirming and visualizing of your goal will give you a path to follow, or a person to talk to, or an action to perform that will effortlessly lead you to your goal, then affirming and visualizing will work for you.

If we think of the Law of "Attraction" as the Law of "Resonance" or "Correspondence", then we may better understand how it is that our circumstances always mirror our *dominant* thoughts/feelings.

I think the biggest problem with most of what is taught about "Attraction" is the absence of sharing more of the larger body of metaphysical wisdom that it comes from.

A scientific law is consistent, so to really be a law anyone who thinks of something would get it, so it is obviously not a real law. It is a marketing scheme to sell things. Tony is about action which is also not a law but much more dependable.

The original teaching about this "Law" doesn't say that "anyone who thinks of something will get it". The teaching is about how your life reflects back to you what you put out in the form of your dominant thoughts/beliefs and emotions combined (your personal vibration if you will). These will most likely be beneath your threshold of everyday consciousness.

It is an old teaching found in some form, or another, in most major religions. Just as you reap what you sow physically, you do so mentally and emotionally as it pertains to your *dominant* thoughts/feelings, which again are most likely beneath your level of everyday conscious awareness.

Even cognitive neuroscience has shown, using split-brain experiments for example, that often the real reason we do something is unknown to us consciously. So, it's not hard to understand that many of the events we experience (draw to us) are experienced because of beliefs that we have *forgotten* are there.

I do think you're right about "The Secret" (book and movie) primarily being a marketing strategy to make money though. But, there will always be a market for that kind of thing.

Heaven never helps the man who will not act.

Dissatisfaction is a man's driving force. Dissatisfaction is created by failure. More failure, more dissatisfaction, more driving force, more success.

Yet that is just what many LOA teachers say. In fact they now say if someone is sick they attracted it, because if they don't say this then there is no LOA, which of course there isn't. Show me the proof and I will believe it.

A thought is different from a thing, so thoughts would attract thoughts, not things, which is another inconsistency of the so called law.

As I mentioned before the LOA is not visualization which is helpful.

          Greetings!

Now, I'm NOT trying to start an argument here. This is just a sampling of some of the ideas I've come across in my research and I offer them here as food for thought, okay? :-)

First, according to Dictionary.com a thought is a thing: Thing - noun

1.a material object without life or consciousness; an inanimate object.
2.some entity, object, or creature that is not or cannot be specifically designated or precisely described.
          (skipped a few definitions)
          8.aim; objective.
          (skipped a few more)
          13.a thought or statement.

Second, neuroscience (see its findings on brain plasticity) has shown that thoughts can affect one's health. For example, Lauren Robins, (MS, LMT) in the article 'The Indefinite Body' says, "Thoughts create chemicals that pour into the rivers and streams coursing through our body. Within 20 seconds, the chemical composition of the body is altered by a thought, having an acid or alkaline effect on our body..." This is one way to attract an experience into one's life, like an illness.

And, finally, all I've been saying is that the way this information is mostly presented is lacking because it leaves out relevant pieces of information from the large body of metaphysical teachings that it comes from.

You are correct when you say that a thought, according to Law, would attract, or reproduce, after its kind. The original teaching NEVER said that our thoughts create or manifest anything! What they said was that by thinking/feeling/behaving in a certain way, we open a door/channel, or make it possible for certain things/circumstances to become a part of our experience. In other words, affirmations/prayers/visualizations don't make something "happen"; they make something "possible".

Yes, nothing on this plane(t) is had without action. But, everything we do is an action, including thinking, affirming, and visualizing. So is our very existence/nature an action: Human BEing. "BE" is a verb (is, am, was, were, be, being, been).

The original teaching about the "Corollary of Attraction" (the Law is "Vibration", see the Book called "The Kybalion") is that the only "thing" affected is the One doing the work. When we change who we are BE-ing (how we are) then ALL the circumstances of our experience, including our behavior, will change as well (so as to resonate with).

I can't be sure, but I think Tony Robbins would agree with this. I know, according to his own admission, that he has used affirmations. He calls them incantations, which is a word that makes me think he has maybe studied metaphysics.

          Thanks for reading.

    Here's how it's really like :

First of all you dun need beliefs whether they're good or bad , As they're false and hence limiting .

Going through limiting beliefs good or bad in and of itself is VERY disturbing , This is why it's incredibly hard for people to change .

At the core of every belief there lies fear , And you wouldn't know above the core there SO many layers of other types of fear , Like fear of success , fear of change..etc .

All you have to do is to let go of the belief , Either do that by writing all of these beliefs down and get into their core by asking "Why is that there?" until you get to the core and release that , And you'll feel incredibly light .

After you feel incredibly disturbed with how hard this could be and after clearing so many beliefs .

You'll realize that positive thoughts are better than negative thoughts , But NO THINKING is the ultimate state of being .

And then the law of attraction works best for you , Because you'd be in your natural state and even your limiting positive thoughts wouldn't ever equate to it .

    Hope that helps bro .

I've been through enough pain already. I do believe and live with the LOA model. It's been working for me for many years. What I focus upon I create more of. I watch myself everyday and my focus is manifested again and again. Most recent manifestation was creating more piano students. Happened in one day. I've noticed that everything is moving faster and manifesting faster these days. What have you noticed?

I would venture to say if one observed you, there would be evidence of a new pattern of action leading to new results. I see many people mistake the LOA for what is really action working in their lives. In either case I am happy when I hear people's lives are improving.

I read a great article on the power of negative thinking by Mike Mahler, here is an excerpt:

`I do not know about you, but I have had it with people that state you should always be positive no matter what. Proponents of positive thinking state that you should always look on the bright side and that no situation is negative unless you believe it is. While this line of thinking might sound good in theory, in practice it is a guaranteed way to never achieve your goals or improve your life. Moreover, always looking on the bright side can be used as an excuse for not improving your life or going after your goals. After all, if everything is great why make any changes?

Contrary to what positive thinking devotees say, applying negative thinking is often necessary to achieve your goals and improve your life. Moreover, negative thinking is a necessity in order to avoid making the same mistakes over and over again. Is negative thinking superior to positive thinking? Not necessarily. A balance of both positive and negative energy is necessary for balance. Let's start off by going over some of the pitfalls of positive thinking.

First, positive thinkers believe that you should always look on the bright side. To some degree, I agree with this. After all, many people dwell on the negative in order to get attention from other people, which is down right pathetic.
In addition, for most of us there will always be people that are far worse off than we are and we should be grateful for what we have. However, we should not use this line of thinking as an excuse to accept circumstances that we are not content with. For example, lets say that you are broke, overweight, and have no friends. You decide to apply positive thinking and accept your situation. After all, it could always be worse. You tell yourself that you are lucky to be you and you walk around with a smile on your face. You tell yourself that there is no need to make money, make friends, or lose weight because everything is okay as it is. Is this really addressing the problem?

Do you really believe that someone is genuinely happy in this situation? I don't think so. Lets flip the script and apply some negative thinking to this situation. You decide that you are fed up with being broke, overweight, and lonely. You get angry and decide to do something about it. You are tired of your pathetic life and cannot stand it anymore.

Without a doubt someone that applies negative thinking in this situation is more likely to achieve his or her goals. Why? Because he or she is in touch with reality and realizes that calling a lame situation good does not change it in the real world. `

If you hunt around on youtube the clips of Tony Robbins talking about the Secret are there. I think there has been a lot of misunderstanding about visualization, positive thinking and the law of attraction. My beef with the Secret is the that action is downplayed. I think it is disingenuous to say you can not take action and get what you want. This to me is luck. If people were honest with themselves, I would bet when they thought the LOA was working, they were in a good frame of mind and also taking action and so good things happened.

The author of the Secret is now coming out with a book called the power, which

“She shows how incredible relationships, perfect health, a life filled with happiness, a career you love and the money you need to do, be and have everything you want, it all come from the power.” ‘The Power’ is the handbook to the greatest power in the universe — the power to have everything you want.”

This to me is marketing stuff. If the LOA would deliver what you think about, what could be more powerful than that? Why would we ever need anything beyond this? So it will be interesting to see what the Power is. I am sure it will sell a gagillion copies and Oprah will have her on again.
