What Is The Meaning Of Perseverance?

Hi fellow warriors!

Just posted this on my blog, and can't help but share this with you too.
Just sit back relax, and be encouraged, inspired, challenged, motivated, and as a result...ACTIVATED!

Don't worry, there are no affiliate links anywhere....it's just words from the heart.
And as is the tradition in our forum, PLEASE add your piece of the puzzle for an even broader comprehension

So...here it goes....the meaning of perseverance:

Sticking to it, keeping at it, not giving up TILL you get it, reach it, finish it. Those are the qualities that should inhabit every serious entrepreneur. The entrepreneur mindset is that of a pioneer. One who is ready to venture into unchartered territories.
Entrepreneurs have a “hussler” spirit. They understand that for something to happen, they have to go out and MAKE it happen.

“Some people make things happen, some watch things happen, while others wonder what has happened”
Famous proverb

So,what does perseverance mean to you? Nobody is born with perseverance; it is a life skill that you develop. It is like a muscle that you train, and to train this muscle you need to exercise it. To exercise perseverance you need adversity. Just like how light can only exist because there is darkness, so does perseverance because of adversity and hardship.
Behind every adversity is an incredible opportunity. What is the challenge you are currently facing today? If you can clearly identify it, then you need to focus all your strength on discovering what is hidden behind the mass of hardship that is pressing you down.
Consider the martial arts Karate mantra of:

“OSU NO SEISHIN”

Osu No Seishin
The Spirit Of Perseverance

Coupled with the traditional values of Kyokushin Karate is the spirit of perseverance. Kyokushin Karate strives to instill in it's followers that "never give up" attitude that will keep people going when under extreme pressure.

This attitude is one which will serve you in every aspect of your life. Our training attemps to develop a 6th sense which makes possible a spontaneity of thought that can make your techniques lightning fast.

Others may say, "It's impossible because it is too difficult"
We say, "It's difficult but not impossible."

There is an old adage that says it all - " Even though a person may defeat 1000 others in battle, it is he who conquers himself that is the greatest warriors"

Consider the butterfly. You can’t help but admire its beauty right?
Well, did you know that before the butterfly became what you so greatly admire for it’s beauty, it was an ugly skin crawling caterpillar?

For the sake of illustration, let me really focus on the third stage of the evolution of the caterpillar to the butterfly.

Please pay close attention to what I am going to explain here.

The third stage is what entomologists call the "Pupa". When the caterpillar is fully grown, it makes a button of silk which it uses to fasten its body to a leaf or a twig. Then the caterpillar’s skin comes off for the final time. It then wraps itself in silk and forms a cocoon around it.
This cocoon is made for the protection of the caterpillar. When looking at a cocoon, it is very ugly on the outside.

I am sure you will agree with me that there is a sense of feeling trapped. In the caterpillar’s case, it is the mass of silk wrapped around it. It literally CANNOT MOVE! It is immobilized!
Does that sound familiar? Do you feel like you are running on a treadmill and that no matter how fast you run, you don’t seem to be gong anywhere? Feeling trapped by your circumstances, situations, pressures (financial, emotional, professional, relational etc).

PART II

Most entomologists agree that the most beautiful butterflies have actually emerged from the ugliest cocoons. The cocoon provides a hard protective coating that is oftentimes camouflaged so that predators cannot see them. They stay there an entire season (usually during wintertime).

“Protective coating?” according to whom? Not according to the caterpillar!
You see, we who are looking on the outside of the caterpillar can see the need for the cocoon. My question to you is….what do you think the caterpillar thinks about this particular circumstance? Maybe it is saying to itself “What the HELL is going on? Why isn’t any of the stuff I try work? I just want things to go back to the way they have always been. Even though it was a pain moving around because of my pace, and all….I will much rather be there than be where I am right now”.

What is my point? I want you to ask yourself the same questions. Do you know where you are going to be 2-5 years from now? All you can see are your current realities that don’t always make sense right?

Ok. Back to the caterpillar…Inside this cocoon the old body parts of the caterpillar are undergoing a remarkable transformation, called ‘metamorphosis’.

· The dictionary defines metamorphosis as a change of:
· Physical form
· Structure or substance
· a striking alteration in appearance, character, or circumstances.

You see, anything that undergoes a metamorphosis is usually accompanied by a change of habitat or behavior. Science cannot explain what happens within metamorphosis except to say that it is a supernatural process that takes place. There are certain laws that will always produce the same results if applied consistently.

When it’s time for the butterfly to emerge and come out of the cocoon, it must STRUGGLE and FIGHT its way out. During this process it will become completely exhausted and stop struggling for long periods of time. Then IT would BEGIN to FIGHT AGAIN until it finally is free of the cocoon that has trapped it inside during this season of its life.
Now, pay even closer attention to this…

Watching this process from a close view is a free session of TORTURE. In fact you may even be tempted to help this process by tearing open the cocoon just to help this “poor caterpillar” out – but that’s the worst thing you could do.

You may think you are bringing justice in trying to help this caterpillar but you would really be killing it. Instead of setting the butterfly free, the reality is that you would be weakening the “half caterpillar – half butterfly” and aborting a VERY IMPORTANT PROCESS of its transformation.

Basically, in trying to help the caterpillar/butterfly, you would be actually weakening it to the point that it would not have fought and strengthened itself enough to have the strength needed to fly on its own. The consequence? It would have eventually and most certainly died.
My point? You need adversity. As an Internet Entrepreneur or as simply as a human being in life looking to develop himself/herself, you ABSOLUTELY NEED adversity. It is the struggle that makes you strong, and makes you soar to heights you could have never imagined.

A caterpillar went into the cocoon, but something entirely different came out. What was once an unattractive creepy crawly thing is something beautiful beyond comprehension.
The butterfly and caterpillar is the same living creature, yet different. It has gone through a metamorphosis or what we call transformation for human life.

I don’t know at what stage you are in your process and journey to your goal. The point is, when you wrote down your goals, you were in a certain condition, and a certain state of mind. In the process, you will EVENTUALLY experience a paradigm shift.

One thing is certain….if you fight, get tired, beat up, discouraged, and STILL GET BACK UP to fight YET AGAIN……You WILL become the “butterfly” you set yourself to be.
Some of you right now may feel that you are trapped inside a cocoon. But don’t stress. Instead prepare your mind to FIGHT till the death!!

In order to become a butterfly, a caterpillar must fully dissolve within the chrysalis – a cocoon of protection. This dissolution or meltdown is the most difficult stage of change; however, while incredibly strenuous and distressing, it is the fundamental component of the transformation process. The metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly is akin to the role of perseverance in your life.

"Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after the other TILL the finish line."

To Your Success,

Richard

  • Great Butterfly story. It makes me think about the butterflies which travel through the area I live in. The persistence they learned while in the cocoon transfers to their journey. When they reach the butterfly stage, they will need the perseverance they learned to make the migration as adults.
I guess one does not give up the perseverance even after one goal is reached.

    Lovely, passionate post, Richard.

Perseverance has to have an engine to drive it, don't you agree? That engine would be belief - in oneself and in the dreams.

We must assume that caterpillar/butterflies either don't suffer from self doubt, or they instinctively know that they will emerge from their pupa state and undergo the metamorphosis.

Keeping people motivated, (myself included) has been a lifelong project of mine because I totally believe that life is for the fulfilment of our dreams and for helping others to do likewise. I just can't see any point otherwise!

The massive appeal of working from home, for example, is surely driven by the desire for personal freedom - it isn't greed.

    What are your thoughts?

    Cheers,
    Trevor.

    • Purpose, Reason, "the goal"? is this why the butterfly goes through such trials? the reason, the purpose, what is (are) the butterflies goal (s)?

I spent about a year contemplating my "reasons" and "purpose". This has fueled my motivational engine, just knowing what My goal is, figuring out what I want, has helped me keep hold of my dream, and continue the "struggle" although I also think the want, the like, the enjoyment of the journey or "struggle" itself is rewarding in itself. Understanding the goals one has, and the Path to get there, and understanding that after one struggle (caterpillar to butterfly) there will be more and steeper hills to traverse (migrating miles to breeding grounds).

      Respectfully,
Mr Millionaire (still no comments on my nickname?)

Ok. Millionaire's dream....what made you choose that name? Am I going to have to address you as "Mr. Millionaire" everytime I talk to you?? lol How about I just call you MD for short?

        Trevor:

In our world of "the pursuit of financial independence"...a "get rich or die tryin'" would be what I would clearly identify as greed.

Two people may pursue the same objective, or even perform the same acts, but what differentiates them is their "REASON"... their "WHY".

My "Why" is about understanding my purpose, and knowing EXACTLY why I am here on earth at this time and age.

I'm quite clear on the value I know I am supposed to bring to this world. So, I am driven by that comprehension that there are litteraly millions of people waiting for me to be activated and bring what ONLY I can bring.

Be clear about your "why" and you will find yourself turbocharged no matter the odds.

The big question behind this "massive appeal" to work at home is to know the WHY:

Is it so that you can sleep in, and not have to answer to a boss?
Is it in order to avoid the long commute?
Is it so tha you could work in your pyjamas?
Is it so that you can travel more?
Is it in order to spend more time with your family?
Is it just in order to do what you want, when you want?

You probably answered YES, to ALL the above questions, correct?

This is all good and fine. However, if the above mentioned reasons are your only reasons, then you are missing something.

You need to be financially free, not for the sake of financial freedom, but in order to accomplish something that is bigger than you and all the reasons mentioned above....that, is TRUE purpose!

        Just my thoughts...

        Richard

          Great post, really.

Usually i don't write here so much but this time i would really to thank you cause this kind of post motivates people and help them to reach their goals.

At the moment i'm at the stage where, after a lot of fights you start to see a little, little light that tells you, go on.. you'r almost there!

          Again great post!

            Hi Neox84,

Keep pushing on. Are your convictions about what you are doing strong enough? If they are not, then you are vulnerable to distractions and hardships.

On the other hand, if you are 100% convicted about what you are doing, then you have absolutely nothing to worry about.....NOBODY or ANYTHING will be able to stop you except YOU!

Don't chase the money, chase the reason behind the dream!

Continuing efforts on a given project is extremely important. Otherwise, forget about finishing it, period.

Case in point: My dad once began carving a wooden Pinocchio's puppet head for me. The project was coming along really well and I looked forward to my dad finishing it. A ten-year-old at the time, I was "into" puppetry and made a number of hand puppets and marionettes, then used them to entertain my younger sister and brother.

Unfortunately, my dad never finished the project, although he kept promising that he would. He just didn't persist, but kept putting the project off.

Perseverance is an important trait. Success is illusive if you don't finish what you start. The most important thing of all is-oops, I gotta go....

I've heard that story so many times. About the butterfly and perseverance/cocoon. Yet, I never really took it what it truly meant.

Today, I woke up, and I haven't been feeling really good lately. One setback after another, one obstacle after another.
My life has been ridiculously difficult(though I can't complain when I see people across the world) and it hurts when one set back after another happens.
Yet my overall mindset in life is, "never give up. Nobody believes in you, but yourself, so prove yourself right." I prayed this morning, because life has been extremely difficult lately, in every aspect, I asked God to give me a sign.

    Then I read this.
My mom used to say, and still says, " El que persevera, alcanza."

    Translation:
    He who perseveres, catches up.

And it kind of got me thinking. My journey isn't over yet, not by a long shot. Although I've been through my hardships, who am I to say this is the end of the line?

I really did like this post. It changed my day.... Thank you Richard

When all things are seemingly stacked up against your favor...that's when perseverence is tested. When momentum seems to be going in the opposite direction and nobody in the world but yourself can see that momentum ever changing course...thats when perseverence is tested.

At the end of the day, this sums up perseverance and what it means to me:

I will do what you won't today so I can do what you can't tomorrow.

Many folks WANT to be able to do things, but they refuse to slug through what they don't want so that they have the ability to do it at all.

How about this quote from Late Randy Pausch?

“The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.”
