I definitely haven't got this down to an art yet, as I still struggle with motivation etc., but I do constantly imagine the life I want to have. Everything I do takes me closer to that vision I have in my head, and I think it really helps to keep me going when things don't seem so easy.

I think that keeping the end goal in the front of our mind at all times *is* a great formula, Ruth. Then everything we do... every ounce of sweat we put into our work is going toward that end.

You're lucky to have a vision. It's a piece of cake if you really want it from here on out.

Too often I see people that are just looking for that "vision" to pursue. Some people spend their entire lives looking for this.
They know it might involve large quantities of money but that's as far as they ever get with it.
Perhaps in reality the money just helps us obtain our real goals/wants/desires?

I think that without the real vision there is no motivation besides survival. Just like the many factory worker friends that we all have that spend their lives in the bar after "punching out from work" each day. You know, the friends that ask us "when are you going to get a real job?".
Nothing against it if that is what you want. Your goal is met and you are where you ever planned on getting.......or didn't plan..

....but that's just not [insert word here] enough for some.....

      Good luck on your vision!

Get real clear on what you want, take focused action toward the achievement of the goal, stay focused on the destination, not necessarily how you get there (staying flexible keeps you from getting stuck). Enjoy the process.

      Rinse and repeat.

My formula to Achieve my Goal: The First thing I do is write my goal Out in the Present tense. Secondly, I write all of the reasons why I want to Achieve this Goal. Thirdly, I write out what will I lose if I don't achieve this goal. Fourth, I put this goal on my blackberry, Index cards laid out throughout my homes. I put the goal on the Index card and put it on my visor in my 2 trucks and 2 cars. I carry the goal on an Index card in my wallet so I can glance at it everyday when I pull out cash or pay for goods and services with my credit card. I put the goal on my visualization board. I put the goal in my bathroom and above my bed in my master bedroom. I put the goal in my home office and exercise room. I put the goal on my refrigerator and in my kitchen. I write out a detailed plan of action on how I can achieve the goal. I set a target date I want to achieve the goal. Finally, I write out challenges and obstacles I may face in pursuing the goal.

Here's My Formula: Vision + Goals (Structures + Conditions) = Inevitable Success & Lasting Fulfillment

        Vision

Make a list of your fears & worries in all areas of your life (i.e - money, relationships, health, spiritual). You'll be surprised at all the things that come up. You can't achieve your goals if your mind is convoluted with subconscious stuff that operates behind the scenes. It's very counter-intuitive, but it's more important to identify the thoughts, emotions and feelings that are holding us back from achieving our goals, rather than the simple method of "positive thinking", "affirmations" or just taking action on what we "think" we want.

Once you identify all the things, then create a counter list of things that you would like to experience and want. So for example, if one of your fears is being judged about your weight issues, then you can write a counter belief such as, "I welcome comments about my weight from everyone, enjoy compliments and let go of all criticism". This way you are getting to the core belief that you would like to adopt when you are facing the world. As opposed to maintaining a victim mentality you are empowering yourself. Do this for as many core fears and beliefs as possible, and be as specific as you can.

Then once you create the list of new set of beliefs, that will become your VISION of your IDEAL self. Put it all together, and write out a vision statement with all the new beliefs. This is very powerful, as this is truly the blueprint of ideal self. Unfortunately most people are very vague about their vision, and hence have no clear goals to accomplish. They simply say things like I want to lose weight, I want to make more money, I want to have more friends etc. Do you actually think that by having a vague vision, and goals that they will ever be realized?

        Goals

Once you've created your vision statement then you can create a list of very specific goals that will complement those new beliefs. Be as specific as possible. Beside each goal write down a structure and condition.

Structures are those things which you will do each day to move further towards your goal.

Conditions are something that you do to support your structures, so that it makes it inevitable for you to succed in reach your goals. These are things that remind you to do the things you listed as your structure. The key is to be very specific, and do things that you can do at the same time
every day for best results. Here's a few examples:

Goal: To weight 115 pounds, and to look and feel fit and healthy.

Structure: will exercise for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, at 7 am, for 20 minutes per session.

        Conditions:
        • will buy new pair of running shoes
        • Will set alarm clock for 7 am every day
        • Will get a membership at gym
        • Will get a friend or family member to call me in the morning to ensure that I do my exercise

Here’s another full example of setting a goal, structure and condition.

Goal: To have sustained energy throughout the day

Structure: Will eat 6 small meals per day of whole nutritious foods.

        Condition:
        • Will prepare all food the night before
        • Will get rid of junk food from house
        • Will put notes on fridge and cabinets which remind me to eat only healthy foods.

As you can see this is a very clear, precise and practical method for achieving your goals. When you are very clear like this, it is hard not to follow through because there is no more confusion. You know EXACTLY what you need to do to achieve your goals. It's inevitable if you just follow the steps. And ultimately achieving your goals, WILL help you realize your vision. Of course you can get much more detailed then this, but this is a basic guideline and formula which anyone can follow to really see results.

Jason, this is a great question. It's easy to set a goal. The hard part is doing the work to achieve it. What I have found out about myself is that I am EASILY distracted. I am a work in progress in staying focused and being consistent. What I have done is picked a product to support, and I've decided on THREE ways to market that product...NOTHING else. I have a list of tasks that I MUST do EVERY day. I'm learning that Internet Marketing success comes with CONSISTENCY. I've been doing this for a month, and I can see a difference already. Not only is the money SLOWLY starting, I feel better about my business!

You must always ensure that you set the right type of goal. The majority of people always focus upon an outcome goal whilst ignoring process and performance goals.

For instance if your outcome goal is to run 1,500 metres within 4 minutes within a year, then that is fine to plant within your mind. However, how are you going to get there and what will motivate you to achieve it. Lets say that your time at present is 4 minutes 30seconds, this is what we call a performance goal in sports psychology. We need to reduce 30 seconds off of our time within 12 months. That is 2.5 seconds every month. This again is fine but how are we just going to achieve this? The answer is through process goals. That 2.5 seconds per month can be achieved by say an extra 10 strides within the distance.

This means that the outcome and performance goals will take care of themselves if we achieve our process goal of more strides. So ultimately we must focus upon our process goals and let the rest take care of themselves.

I agree with this... setting a realistic goal is often the difference between success and giving up. If your goal is your first million before you're 30 and you only reach half a million, you just set yourself up for some bad feelings. (Okay, that's an extreme example, but it makes my point.)

Realistic goals are important... and then if you surpass that goal there's
      something to celebrate.

My formula is goal Setting is an important exercise for small business owners; without goals, we would just drift along. Goal setting allows us to be proactive, instead of just being reactive. We've all had days where we just seem to leap from one crisis to another, but we know that it's not a preferred mode of operation!

    imMindset said it well.
It starts with vision. That ensures Integrity, which is key.
All the "make a million dollars this year" wishes are just that: wishes.
The goals that spring, spontaneously and inevitably from your true Vision, are the ones that will change your life.

I have found the key is to work on a short list of goals - three or less and then create a feedback mechanism to keep you on track. I have read dozens of books and then used the information and my own ideas to develop a method to get goals achieved. These two factors work.

The best way to achieve your goal is to write it down first. Get it out of your head.

Now, once you do that, write out a plan on how to achieve that goal. What actions you must take. I think that if you do that, your chances of reaching your goal or goals is much better then thinking about it and never having an effective plan on how to achieve them.

I think you start with a grand, overarching vision and then come up with several primary goals that are in harmony with that vision.

You have to break those goals down into bite-size pieces, and what I like to do is either have a notepad or a whiteboard where you can create a simple mind map of how everything connects together - your goals, the steps needed to get there, and the process flow/sequence of what needs to be done.

You also need to build on this by having somewhere between 5-10 tasks every day that you need to do which support the steps that you have already written out. It's good to write these tasks out either the night before, or early in the day before you actually get started on any activities.

1- I choose a goal 10x bigger than myself (to help me grow - if i fall short i've still reached a higher level)

2- I in-vision my goal, what it will look like when I success. how i will obtain it. I play out every scenario in my head like a chess game.

3- I know that every one of my actions have a reaction so I am sure to act in the most positive manor to benefit all people and parties that help me.

      4- I research

      5- I plan on paper

6- I speak and tell of my plan (i keep some details of the goal to myself : some things are better that way)

7- I execute. Most important part is that I keep my original vision in mind the whole time of the execution. This will ensure that my ideal results are secured.

This is my formula for reaching any goal I have ever set, and is 100% encapsulated in this poem which is on the wall above my desk....

    Don't Quit!
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low, and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
    when he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow,
You may succeed with another blow.
Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
    It may be near when it seems so far;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit,
It's when things seem worst, that
    You Must Not Quit.
    ~ C. W. Longenecker ~

With that poem in mind, nothing is impossible to those who believe, and are prepared to get off their butt and make it happen....
