Your Favorite Motivational Movies

We had a great thread at the "old Warrior Forum" with several great movies listed. Well we have many new faces and probably new movies out since that thread.

I am looking to add some new movies to watch but also to add to the Motivational Movies Squidoo page from the old list of Warrior movies. Pursuit of Happyness is ranked #1.

I will start with a few of my favorite movies: Rocky, Rudy, and Pay It Forward

Please add your favorites so we all can enjoy.

The Secret, and The Lord of the Rings...

The Lord of the Rings may seem like an odd choice because it's a fantasy movie but there are a couple of lines in the movie scripts which have really touched a chord in me and they are:

    In The Two Towers:

Frodo: I can't do this, Sam.
Sam: I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.
Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?
Sam: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for.

and from The Fellowship of the Ring:
Frodo: I know what I must do, it's just that... I'm afraid to do it.
Galadriel: Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.

I've watched "The Legend Of Bagger Vance" several times now and still find it moving. It's about a golfing competition between greats Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, and a talented amateur golfer (R. Junuh) from Georgia.

It was directed by Robert Redford (based on a 1995 novel of the same name by Steven Pressfield) and has strong influences from the Bhagavad Gita.

Bagger Vance is a spiritual guide in physical form that urges Junuh to get his act together, and find calm focus in the moment to bring out his abilities.

The scene where Junuh imposes a 2 shot penalty on himself (though no one else had seen the accidental infringement) is actually based on a similar incident by Bobby Jones in the US Open (1925). Jones lost that tournament by 1 stroke.

At that point in the movie, when Junuh takes the penalty, Vance decides he is no longer needed and leaves, though the match is unfinished and in the closing, critical stages.

      Inspiring.

      Ivan

Here are a couple of key scenes from the movie readers might enjoy:

      Enjoy.

Movies can be so personal when they strike an emotional cord, we all know that. "What Dream May Come" touched something inside of me, then still years to know more.

Love the Bagger Vance movie... The Secret... Then since I'm also a lover of action flicks (I'm a guy) "Saving Private Ryan"

Ever read the book? The Movie is great but the book is really inspirational. It's amazing how difficult that man's childhood was. What a great example of the power of persistence.

What a great post! I would say my favorite movies are:

    The Secret
    Pay It Forward
    Flash Dance

My last choice, "Flash Dance" may seem odd. I remember wanting to buy my 1st house when I watched it for the first time. I was inspired so much by the dancer's determination to get into the dance school against all odds and she did it. The next day, I called my realtor and took action and moved a couple of mountains and bought my 1st house. Mind you in 1983 the interest rates were as high as 17%. I did some research and got a great interest rate. I also more then doubled my money when I sold it years later.

Yes, Flash Dance was great. I remember dancing my heart out to "Flash Dance...What a Feeling" (Irene Cara), which won an Academy Award for best song. The critics didn't like the movie and it got poor reviews but proved to be a sleeper hit and was the 3rd highest grossing movie in the U.S. for 1983.

There are too many for me to name...

However, I can say that sports movies tend to be the most inspirational IMHO. I absolutely LOVE sci-fi movies and how they can convey messages about honor and bravery, but they aren't real. Sports movies are often based on true stories, and they make you feel like you can overcome any obstacle because the protagonists did as well.

It has to be Pursuit of Happiness without a doubt.

For anyone starting out with their own business this film is a must and even more so if you are doing it for your family like me. It just shows that you can really make a difference in your life if you want it enough.

But a less obvious one for me is a film called True Romance with Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette and a great list of stars. It is a rollercoaster story where they get into loads of trouble but their love for each other pulls them through.

It sounds rubbish when I describe it but it really isn't.

For me it's got to be Rocky, Jerry Maguire and Shawshank Redemption. Rocky is a timeless classic that shows how even starting from humble beginnings anyone can rise to the top of their profession. Jerry Maguire had a lot of really good one liners in it that I will never forget and make me feel good whenever I watch it. Shawshank Redemption shows how a never say die attitude against all odds can bring anyone back to the top and enjoy freedome and prosper again.

Banzai - starring Michael Keaton and a bunch of japanese guys and it's about a Detroit automotive factory taken over by a Japanese corporation. Clash of corporate cultures that lead to labor disputes, management problems, and regaining honor (may it be Japanese or American). Managing people is a lot harder than machines and money. Learn to adapt.

Stranger Than Fiction - Will Ferrell was at his best as the man with that tick-tock precision when it comes to his habits both at home and work but realizes that he must face imminent death and live life fully beyond what he does as an IRS agent. What makes it even more beautiful is that he finds love in a girl that abhors his profession. Sometimes a story is like life, it needs a makeover.

The Godfather series - How you treat your family and the people that work for you reflects how you handle them, to the pinnacle of success or to damnation in achieving it. Business is business. Nothing personal.

Revenge of the Nerds - what can I say? I root for the underdogs who know better but get marginalized for the simple reason that they are, very special in their own right. Don't take crap from anyone who thinks otherwise and do your thing. :p

Rudy has moved into a tie for #1 with Pursuit of Happyness. This is the first time any movie has even been tied with Pursuit of Happyness. Personally, I am huge fan of both movies.

American Beauty is my favorite, even though a lot of people wouldn't consider it very motivational because of the ending. Watching Lester take on the world always makes me want to get up and do something.

And every Saturday - believe it or not -- when I watch my HGTV programs, I get up and start cleaning and organizing -- talk about motivational! Sometimes I even drive to Home Depot or the store and buy things to fix up my home! Those shows and coffee are what really kicks my butt! :p

Seabiscuit was probably one the most inspirational movies I've ever seen. The message I got was that anybody can win if they put their mind to it.

Also, and don't laugh, but another favorite was The Incredibles. Even if you get old you haven't lost your power! I love how the old Super Heros were pulled out of retirement after being forced to remain incognito for years.

I must say that the best motivational movies i've ever seen are:

          Into The Wild.
          Good Will Hunting.

But for motivational speeches i'd have to go with Al Pacino's on any given sunday.

I'm going to leave you with the video an transcript:

I don't know what to say really.
          Three minutes
to the biggest battle of our professional lives
          all comes down to today.
          Either
          we heal
          as a team
or we are going to crumble.
          Inch by inch
          play by play
          till we're finished.
We are in hell right now, gentlemen
          believe me
          and
          we can stay here
and get the **** kicked out of us
          or
          we can fight our way
          back into the light.
We can climb out of hell.
          One inch, at a time.

Now I can't do it for you.
          I'm too old.
I look around and I see these young faces
          and I think
          I mean
I made every wrong choice a middle age man could make.
          I uh....
I pissed away all my money
          believe it or not.
          I chased off
anyone who has ever loved me.
          And lately,
I can't even stand the face I see in the mirror.

You know when you get old in life
          things get taken from you.
          That's, that's part of life.
          But,
you only learn that when you start losing stuff.
You find out that life is just a game of inches.
          So is football.
          Because in either game
          life or football
the margin for error is so small.
          I mean
one half step too late or to early
          you don't quite make it.
One half second too slow or too fast
and you don't quite catch it.
The inches we need are everywhere around us.
They are in ever break of the game
          every minute, every second.

On this team, we fight for that inch
On this team, we tear ourselves, and everyone around us
          to pieces for that inch.
We CLAW with our finger nails for that inch.
          Cause we know
when we add up all those inches
that's going to make the ****ing difference
          between WINNING and LOSING
          between LIVING and DYING.

          I'll tell you this
          in any fight
it is the guy who is willing to die
who is going to win that inch.
          And I know
if I am going to have any life anymore
it is because, I am still willing to fight, and die for that inch
because that is what LIVING is.
The six inches in front of your face.

Now I can't make you do it.
You gotta look at the guy next to you.
          Look into his eyes.
Now I think you are going to see a guy who will go that inch with you.
You are going to see a guy
who will sacrifice himself for this team
because he knows when it comes down to it,
you are gonna do the same thing for him.

          That's a team, gentlemen
and either we heal now, as a team,
or we will die as individuals.
          That's football guys.
          That's all it is.
          Now, whattaya gonna do?

An older documentatry called "The Journey" You can buy it on amazon used for $2.94 ASIN B0000TFGX2

After college, Eric Saperston bought a 1971 Volkswagon Bus, took his Golden Retriever Jack, and set out to follow the Grateful Dead and work a ski season in Aspen. While out on the road, he called up some of the most powerful and influential people in the world and asked them out for a cup of coffee. What started out as a personal journey to find the answers to life's biggest questions - Why am I here? How can I find happiness? What is success? - quickly turned into something much bigger than he ever had imagined.

Find it! It is worth the effort.

Fast Five, aka Fast & Furious 5: Rio Heist, aka Maybe The Most Insanely Entertaining Film Of The Year. After all, this clip does actually answer a few of the nagging how did they do that? questions that we had leaving the cinema, even if it still can't explain the physics of that big sweaty Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson fight entirely. Here, we get a glimpse behind the scenes of the big safe heist, wherein two cars drag a big heavy safe through the streets of Rio and it tumbles through buildings, knocks cars off bridges and generally causes havoc. But then again, what else do you expect given the people involved? Fast & Furious 5: Rio Heist is out on September 5 on DVD and Blu ray, which will allow you the chance for repeat viewing of this classic and which may, in turn, allow you to figure out why The Rock is so sweaty throughout and how it's even faintly possible that no one died in that initial bit with the bus.

The Concierge - starring Michael J Fox and Gabrielle Anwar (correct me if I'm wrong). It talks about how he saves up on tips, does favors for clients with a few kickbacks, and makes a proposal to build his own hotel, only to be screwed by a client consultant who has intentions of stealing the plans for himself. The love angle is tolerable and builds up the story towards the end when love conquers and the business dream was almost gone. And then the dream plan is mailed accidentally to a client that Michael helped with his wife and helps him achieve it.

Lesson is that it helps to give 110% of your effort to service your clientele and you might hit the jackpot when you build your own successful business. And it also helps to know your network and avoid getting screwed by others trying to steal your own ideas.

In 1980 I was a young boy. I stayed home from school one day because I wasn't feeling well. While my mother was out I was bored so I turned on the TV and watched some of the Winter Olympics. The American hockey team was just taking the ice and about to play the Russians. Now, I've never been a hockey fan and really didn't understand the sport, especially at such a young age, but even I knew the Russians were unbeatable. Everyone knew it - everyone except the amateur American team. I watched anyway.

What followed was one of the most remarkable acts of courage and determination I would ever see in sports as the Americans never let up and never allowed themselves to be intimidated by a better, quicker and more experienced team. They actually seemed to get stronger as the game ended with one of the greatest upsets in sports history.

The movie "Miracle," which came out several years ago did an excellent job capturing that team's courage. The moment and the movie will be something I will never forget.

I take inspiration and enlightenment from many movies - some of which are probably perceived by many people as being downright sad and depressing.

In fact, this applies to everything in life. I'm fascinated by how things work, the possibilities of life, taking chances, risks, self-belief, manifestation, the "law of attraction", etc.

Anyway, there's too much stuff to list entirely but a few films which spring to mind are:

    Field of Dreams
    The Color of Money
    Risky Business
    Cool Runnings
    The Edge
    There Will Be Blood
    The Worlds Fastest Indian

I wouldn't say there's any particular film which I can attribute my success to specifically. But I do feel that I take something "more" from movies. When other people are walking ou out of that theater and merely thinking "good film", "boring film", I'm thinking of ways to relate what I've seen on-screen to my own life experiences. Wondering about the possibilities and opportunities open to us as people, that many others overlook or are oblivious to, and thinking about the pursuit of happiness, success and wealth.

I thought I'd post 2 sports movies, and was scrolling the last few posts before I did.
It didn't take me long to find one of them listed! lol.

      The Rookie.
      Invincible.

Both are along similar lines - stories of 'normal' people who manage to get into the top level of their favourite sport. Baseball for The Rookie, NFL for Invincible.

      Both based on true stories.

I enjoy movies full stop, but loved both of these, they are understated in style which I like.

As for the motivational aspect? Well, if you wanted to write a movie about inspiration and achievement using sport, you'd probably come up with something along the lines of these true ones!

It has got to be Pursuit of Happyness

I stumbled upon this movie about a month ago when I was searching for material to co-write a chapter of a for a book entitled The Art and Science of Success.

It is a real life success story of how a man who was dead broke and became very rich because of his sure commitment to get out of the rut he was in.

I has really motivated me to dwell deep into the thoughts and habits of successful people ....

I have not seen the whole movie other than those posted on Youtube. Look for the one "You want something. Go get it. Period."

      Enjoy ...

Well, this is my first time of hearing such things as motivational movies. Maybe because I rarely have time to watch movies. But I do create alot of time reading. Now that I have learnt about movies that are motivational, it will not hurt if I give it a try.

I have seen so many movies with great motivational speeches embedded in the story. One of my favorite is Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. In which in the scene where Sam and Frodo were almost at the mountain of Mordor, but are very weak to continue. The line that I really love was:
Sam: I can't carry it for you Mr Frodo, but I will carry you.
That scene is so powerful that Sam never left Frodo's side and literally, lifted Frodo to the mountain to destroy the ring.

And also, I just recently watched this movie last March and it really sends the message to my heart and mind. Hachiko:A dog's tale. Wow, this movie will really open our eyes that friendship bounds no one or someone. Imagine, a dog's loyalty to his master and the friendship that he had never ends even till their death. Hachiko's master died of a heart attack during his class and Hachiko, who always wait for his master's return at the train station, still waits for his master at the station. Everyday, he keeps on waiting at the station for his dead master and for almost 10 years, still waits for his master to return until age and illness prevents Hachiko from waiting at the station any longer.
That movie will always be in my heart and mind, that friendship bounds no one and is not limited to humans only. I can really say that loyalty is beyond humans, and more importantly, friendship to anyone is unlimited.

Thanks for this opportunity to share our personal side.

I find Batman Begins pretty motivating. Possibly a weird choice. It's the dedicating your life to a higher purpose and turning something awful into a positive (or as positive as you can) that I like about it.

I consider Bruce Lee's The Chinese Connection (called Fists Of Fury in Asia) to be one of the most motivational movies, at least for me and the impact that it had personally. I'll never forget the Japanese karate dojo scene. It's one of the moments that changed my life.

Thank-you for the trip down memory lane with this post!

There are so many with truly inspiring scenes. However my favourites remain:

The Blind Side and Pay it Forward- both teach us how looking out for others and putting their needs before your own selflessly can truly change your life as well as theirs.

I truly try to live by the motto that everything in life that you perceive to be a blessing should be paid forward. It also helps motivate me to keep going, even when things don't seem to be going according to plan.

If your heart and your head are in the right place, the sun will always shine through the clouds, illuminating that silver lining we often miss. There are always things to be thankful for and blessings are abundant if we are prepared to give blessings to others without expecting something in return.

Here's the link to the youtube video. It's awesome. It features Felix Dennis who is worth hundreds of millions of UK Pounds(I don't know how to insert the symbol but you know what I mean)

The video is called: Can you get rich? I've watched it dozens of times.

Read this yesterday and saw the secretariat replys. Just saw the movie today....i guess many of you are either horse racing lovers, gamblers, or, jockeys, lol.

The movie was ok, the woman was believer in her dads vision.

The horse was the star, one of a kind. A horse that loved to race, a horse that could run fast, and, long distances...A genetic freak of sorts.

If it was a human story I would have been more compelled. A sports hero in an animal doesn't have the same umph. JMO.

Wow - what a great thread! I love watching movies and tend to find some inspiratio from everyone I watch. The films that stand out the most for me are:

The Secret - although I preferred the book it is what started me on my spiritual journey and improved life.

Yes Man - I'm not a big fan of Jim Carrey and the film isn't the best but the message it gives is amazing. I decided after watching this film to say 'yes' to more things and it opened up so many new doors and opportunities. I even have a necklace with 'yes man' engraved on it (a gift from a friend) which is a constant reminder.

Pleasantville - I watched this fim years ago when I was a teenager and it made me realise that to be happy you had to do what was right for you and not for anyone else. I must watch it again.

The Pursuit of Happyness and Pay it Forward are on my much watch list and now after this thread so are many other films.

So many inspiring movies come to mind. One of them is Defending Your Life with Albert Brooks and Meryl Streep. Brooks' sarcastic sense of humor carries him and the movie through the afterlife. Nice message about focusing on the things that matter while you are alive.

Another movie I found motivational is not one you'll see on many lists. It is Collateral starring Tom Cruise as a hit man who abducts a cabbie played by Jamie Foxx. The cabbie, at gunpoint, is forced to drive Cruise around to a series of hits. I liked the motivational aspect of the cabbie confronting the fact that for years he has talked about his dreams but never taken action on them. That said, you do have to wade through an awful lot of violence in this one. Great soundtrack though.

The Patriot with Mel Gibson. I think every America loving citizen needs to be reminded of who we are and what makes us different from the rest of the world. This movie is a great portrait of us. Plus it's funny in parts.

      Disturbing the Universe.

The short version: A lawyer, William Kunstler, goes from a nobody, to a 70's era civil rights champion of an almost unprecedented stature, to a character that others see almost as a media-hungry buffoon. The story told through the eyes of his children.

What I see in it: A man who consistently strove to challenge peoples' beliefs and understandings, who questioned everything for himself and challenged others to do the same as a way to find truth. A man who was less afraid of being wrong, than letting the truth go undiscovered. And it's as though everyone, even his own children making the documentary, fail to see the genius in the man. They see his "fall from grace" as a sad discontinuity of his character, rather than as a consistent effort to make people take off the blinders and think for themselves, and challenge for themselves that which they "know".

Here's a clip from one of his speeches.

What does that have to do with internet marketing? Well, more than anything, it's a view into a different dimension of reality in life. Let me tell you what I mean. Here is a guy who was unpopular for supporting the underdog, and then became popular and famous for it, he gained respect for investing his time and intellect into championing the causes of those who could not defend themselves and he did this in pursuit of what he felt was Right. And then, in the end, he LOST the respect of his "fans" when he began sacrificing his REPUTATION for what he felt was right.

And that's where the movie leaves off, with the narrators essentially wondering, "What happened to the great civil rights fighter?" But what they failed to recognize. And what all of his detractors failed to recognize, is that he was being perfectly consistent throughout. In the end, he took the reputation he had built and sacrificed that, not just his time and energies, into doing what he felt was right. And as that reputation became tarnished, people lost faith in him. But what he actually did, was use that tool to fight for what he believed.

The story is a tragedy in a way. Where a man was finally left with nothing left to spend, but the power of his reputation, in pursuing his calling. And so he spent it. And died. Misunderstood by all, including the narrators of the film... his own daughters.

      Ice Cold in Alex.

The traditional motivational movie is too sugary and cheap for my liking. I remember an excellent blog about the 'Effort Shock' phenomenon people experienced after being 'inspired' by movies like The Karate Kid.

But Ice Cold in Alex... ahhh! There you have a true picture of the business of life. A bunch of soldiers, battered and oily and dehydrated, struggle through the desert with their tank. You feel their pain and terrible effort ... and then the elation of, finally, drinking an ice cold beer when they make it to civilisation. You can practically taste it.

It's an honest flick, and I daresay does a better job than most at preparing an individual for an arduous journey towards success.

As I mentioned in one of my post...

Matrix is not just another sci-fi or action that can make you fell ''wow'' when you watch how the actors dodge bullets, but there is something behind every name, character and scene. This quote from the movie really make question everything about the life in 1999:

Morpheus: What is real? How do you define 'real'? If you're talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then 'real' is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.

What do you think about this? Do you agree with Morpheus?

    Peaceful Warrior

When I watched this movie for the first time I have realized that we have to change our perspective if we like to change our self. This is one of my favorite quotes in the movie that really inspire me:

“There is no need to search; achievement leads to nowhere. It makes no difference at all, so just be happy now! Love is the only reality of the world, because it is all One, you see. And the only laws are paradox, humor and change. There is no problem, never was, and never will be. Release your struggle, let go of your mind, throw away your concerns, and relax into the world. No need to resist life, just do your best. Open your eyes and see that you are far more than you imagine. You are the world, you are the universe; you are yourself and everyone else, too! It's all the marvelous Play of God. Wake up, regain your humor. Don't worry, just be happy. You are already free!”
