"You just need to get started" is bad advice

Just wanted to share this with my fellow warriors,it is from Ramit Sethi

Honestly, this is not the kind of stuff most blog readers want to hear. They want "tactics" and "tips" about how to "hack" their lives. But it's important to blend quick wins with deep theory and rigor. The most successful people know this -- and maintain a balance of quick wins and long-term strategy.

I really like IWTYTBR, and this is a pretty good post.

I agree that it takes more than "just getting started"- I think persistence is more important.

You're going to fail- period. So when you fall are you going to lay there with your face in the dirt and cry? Or pick yourself up and start running again (because dusting yourself off takes too much time!)

I usually say that taking action is the most important step. Most people overthink the things and end up doing nothing. Persistence is the second essential thing.

Of course, it doesn't fit everybody. I myself have never had problems taking action, but in the beginning persistence and focus were big problems for me.

      Action: 60%
      Focus: 30%
      Method: 10%

Althoug most people use to do the inverse, this is the formula that alowed me to become a full-time internet marketer, so I think it's a good way to play this game.

Obviously, I'm not saying take action and burn your wallet even if you don't know nothing about this industry!. That would be stupidity. However, a person doesn't need to know everything about all the methods and traffic sources in order to do something. Experience is the best teacher, so trying and failing is the best way to crack the code of internet marketing.

this post is funny because just the other day I said to myself,

      Just do something!

It doesn't matter what the hell it is!

      Just do Something! Anything...

I would say that there is a big difference between plain action and conscious action.

    That is the clue.

Get started learning, then start doing. Don´t only learn what you should do, but WHY you are recommended doing so. That is the only way you can go on creating something unique IMO.

I have to disagree with the OP. I'm a thinker and a procrastinator, I can think about every little detail of every little thing I need to do and how to do it better and fast and when I have to do next after that and on and on. But until I just get started nothing happens. Thinking has to stop at some point and action as to take over...and usually once I start working, it flows better. So if a person has been sitting around thinking about getting started for a while, its probably time for them to get started. Then they can think about what they did wrong and get started on fixing that, and on and on.

Everyone is different, but I believe it's important to have a plan, no matter what you do. From there you can take action to make the plan work and reach your goals. Just jumping in without a proper plan can cause more harm than good. Everyone is prone to trial and error, but the less errors the better.

Sometimes doing the research and thinking about it is part of taking action. You can't just jump into something and not know what you are doing.
So yes, take action but take the right actions and do it smart.

Yes you need other things but ACTION solves MANY problems

I would rather have an inexperienced guy who takes massive action than the most intelligent, trained person who does little.

In the IM world you can (and should) fail fast, course correct and rinse and repeat...

    Action wins everytime...

I agree. I spent many wasted years "learning" how to do a radio show. I finally got off my duff and started hosting one. The first show was a near disaster. I'm currently up to episode 5 but I'm already getting better at it. 5 episodes in a matter of weeks taught me more than 3 years of observing.

Pick a way to make money online and follow it through. Pick something you are interested in will make it easier to get started and still with it. Once you start it becomes addictive.
    Success to you!

The balance of short-term, in-the-moment pleasure with long-range progress toward meaningful goals is the sum and substance of happiness itself.
Tal Ben-Shahar's book, Happier, is an extended study of this principl and well worth the read.

I hope this thread helps me because I suffer a lot from procrastination. I know what I have to do, only that I don't do it. I have read many tutor books that I'm just stuck at a place, doing nothing except browsing many forums.

Whistler... Get your a** up and do something!!!

I think in the new-age (my apologies for the the cliche term) people are used to instant gratification. They don't want to hear discouraging news such as, "hey Johnny, you're gonna have to bust your ass for a couple months or years to get somewhere!" They wish to be sold on gimmicks, and failure is one of those sobering moments that builds character. Who has the time for that? Please note the sarcasm.

Every object is at the state of rest until a relevant force is applied to it.

If you don't do something, nothing will start working for you the way you want it.

You just have to do what you can with what you have at where you are.

I used one that I got from a Billy Blanks Taebo DVD years ago of all things, he used to say "No matter how down you are, or how tired you are, just stick the DVD in and press play! Don't worry about the rest, just press play".

So I tell myself to "just press play" every time I'm lazy haha
