If You Want To Design Your Life Then Learn How To Set Goals

Jim Rohn said this about goals: "There's no telling what you can do when you get inspired by them. There's no telling what you can do when you believe in them. And there's no telling what will happen when you act upon them."

Jim also stated that the major reason for setting goals is for what it makes of you to accomplish them. The far greater value in goal setting and achievement is who you become in the process rather than what you get.

Why Goal Setting is So Powerful
Goal Setting allows us to stay focused. It forms our dreams. It gives us the ability to hone in on specific action steps to take that lead us to accomplishing the dreams we desire. It also allows us to stretch and grow in ways we haven't gone before. Once you reach your goals you become better than you were before in many areas including marketable skills, organization and planning, prioritizing, self-discipline, relationship building and selling and marketing.

Components That Make Up a Powerful Goal
Goals must be inspiring, believable and you must act on them. Once all these components fall into place your goal will arrive in the season of harvest. Goals provide us with that long term vision. When we set goals, that long term vision will assist us to get past short-term obstacles. Goals are for the future. However, we live in the present. The more powerful the goals the more we will act on them in the short-term to guarantee that they will be achieved.

Once upon a time there were no airplanes, cars, the telephone, cameras, the internet. It took someone's imagination and ideas to set a goal to create the inventions I just mentioned. The minds behind these ideas had a healthy dissatisfaction for things the way they were. They decided to take those ideas through the use of their imagination and act upon them to create the physical reality we all have today.

Let your imagination take you where you want to go and reflect on Jim's quote at the beginning of this article. Live your life by design rather than by accident.

"Whatever you vividly imagine, ardently desire, sincerely believe and enthusiastically act upon must inevitably come to pass." - Paul J Meyer.

Did someone have a Tony Robbins injection recently ? :-)

Setting goals doesn't always work. Also, this is something to do with caution, as reach a goal can, at times, have poor consequences.

Try: setting goals "well". Remember to check your personal ecology. Get ready to fill the void if / when the goal is achieved. Or try ongoing goals. Different in nature, and more useful over time.

    I agree with Keith
Goal is important as long as it is reachable and of course has short term and long term plan to reach it

Jim Rohn has been working on my mind and my life for the last few weeks. I have gone from a lifetime of no or low goals to having a list of 50 goals for the next 10 years.

My life currently is an example of living without any goals. I am living where I don't want to live, working where I don't want to work and wearing clothes that I don't want to wear. It sucks and it is my motivation every second of every day to make changes. To take some ACTION!

The goal this year for my family was to get my wife and I both in school, learning skills that will double or triple our current income. She is at the top of her class and set to graduate in the beginning of January. My cosmetology classes start in January and will continue for 18 months.

I dreamed, wished and wallowed for years before getting busy and writing down my goals. Clearly defining what I wanted, putting it on paper and then getting busy has led me to a place that seemed impossible one year ago.

One big change for me is that I found a whole new group of Heroes and Mentors. When I was younger my heroes were Tim Leary, Aliester Crowley, Malcom X,
Robert Anton Wilson and other Rebels. Today I am learning from the Old Masters like
Jim Rohn, Earl Nightingale, Brian Tracy, Les Brown and Tony Robbins among others. Now my rebellion is against my old self.

Two old slogans that help me: "Aim High" and "Just Do It!"

Hehe I wasn't far: Jim Rohn was the first of Tony Robbins' mentors.
Have a look at the ways to define well-formed outcomes. It may help you refine what you want and gain elegance as you go get them.

The point I was making was that, done the Jim Rohn way, goal setting is conflictual somehow. Something to fight against is what gives power to the process.

I prefer more gentle methods, where motivation is about going ahead quietly, without needing to rebel against the world, and getting obstables out of the way by simply giving them a nudge on the side.

With that being said, I am probably writing this because I used the more hardcore method you're describing first. There is a time for everything.

Best wishes to you no matter what.

A big key is a short goal list. Laundry lists tend not to get done.

I believe that where you are in the goal setting continuum is important to how you set your goals. If this is your first experience with setting goals then... Make It Easy!

Set a simple goal with a few small steps to get it done, and give yourself an 80% or better chance of success. As you start getting the small simple goals accomplished then raise the bar. Until you see a big goal that is 10 or more years down the road. Where you cannot really see the result as possible right now. Break down that huge goal into several smaller tasks each with an end date.

Goal setting is a process and a skill. Take small steps and then go for the moon (or beyond.) Your personallity will tell you weather you want to have goals that move easily or if you need that challenge to yourself to get the job done.

I live a much less stressful life thanks to having worked with a Dennis Waitley coach in the goal setting arena. It has helped me many ways over the years.
