can someone answer this for me?

say i have a domain name that i want to purchase, that corresponds to the keyword i want to rank for, but it is unavailable

SO my plan B is to purchase a domain name that still involves these keywords, but adds an extra one to it, so for example:

i want to rank for tackle boxes but tackleboxes.com is unavailable

so instead i choose baitandtackleboxes.com

would this work out? or would it be some downside to this? thanks!

If the domain is taken, its the best alternative. I'm not an SEO guru by any means, but I cant see it playing a tremendous impact unless you are dealing with tremdnous volume.

My bet is your backlinking and on-age seo is more critical!

Have you tried contacting the domain owner. You should be able to get their details off whois. But if it's a parked page it's probably owened by a domainer who will no doubt want top $$

I think that you are right. I'm not a SEO expert either, but I have some experience dealing with organic traffic and I think that domain is more relevant than most people say.

Yes I agree try and contact the owner to buy if that is what you really want but the other alternative is to add another word or words as you have done.

    Hi Jeffery,

Do the research and find the domain name listed next in the search for your keyword.

Don't just add words to it that won't work. Take the time to find another longtail that
includes the keywords you want. You may then find low hanging fruit that meets your
needs and allows you the option for a domain name.

    Have a Great Day!

Did you try tacklebox (singular?) or tackle-box? did you try the info, net extensions? Recently an expert explained that he can rank #1on Google for these extensions also. So go back and see what you can do as an alternative. Good luck to you.

I think the 2nd best option kind of adds to the element.
I read something the other day that was about choosing domains and it mentioned that as long as the main key words are there, its excellent to have other key words as well... so in my opinion, (not that it really matters that much) bait is a great alternate!

I am not a SEO guru, but I think and know (from my experiences) that the domain you bought is an excellent alternative.

I am also wondering about this: when do you monetize your site? Do you do it immediately, or wait until you rank well and then ad them?

I would go with tackleboxesandbait.com so that the key word comes first. Thats my take.
