How to get in the press by stalking reporters & using jedi mind tricks (foul mouth @shoemoney guide)

Shoemoney sure knows his little persuasion and psychological tricks when it comes to baiting the press...

If you have ever read 'How to Win Friends & Influence People' this is it being put effectively into practice for an online business.

Check it out:
Getting press for your website, application, or service

I've managed to get my sites in the mainstream press but never by directly baiting a journalist in this way, was certainly an interesting read.

Have you ever tried to get mainstream press?
Hint: Local press is an easy target to practice on.

Great Share. I didn't know there was a name for this stuff. Been doing it for years (not on the press) without knowing it...

Excellent read, very engaging. And clearly he has mastered the system with journalistic egos. Thanks for sharing that.

Okay. After a few days of reflection, I have to admit, I am not entirely impressed. It's engaging... but not entirely effective, in my mind.

    Am I being too Idealistic?

Why don't you think it is effective?

Really Shoemoney is just laying out a strategy on how to build relationships with influencers, obviously it is done a bit tongue in cheek and pointing fun at journalists and mainstream media in general, but his general approach is sound.

Really it just points out that most people just approach reporters with requests for coverage, with no concern for the reporters position or point of view - its all take, selfishness and no give. Take a bit of interest in what the reporter does and also try to make their job as easy as possible then you are more likely to get coverage.

I get hit with press releases and requests for coverage daily, most get ignored but I have to admit I'll pay more attention to those that reach out personally and also try to make my job easier and think from my point of view by actually presenting something newsworthy.

Agreed, Chris. It's not that the method, as outlined, is ineffective. It just seems to be neither a secret, nor a huge boost to business. Okay, fine, a small or local boost to business is great too, especially if you have three or four going on at once. I'm not trying to be a buzzkill, or negative. I just can't think of too many success stories that started with a news story... Ah, with the exception of Matthew Drudge and The Drudge Report. But then, he was the journalist. (If you don't know his claim to fame, look it up. I promise you will laugh.) :-)

Getting mainstream press is a huge key to becoming big. Of course it is not the only way, but it is a powerful tool in your arsenal. There are countless examples of mainstream press powering a business, although it really depends on the business model.

Apple is about the best example out there, they really know how to create buzz and entice their audience and the press.

From an SEO perspective links from mainstream press are about the best links you can get. From first hand experience I can say that if you really want to compete seriously in Google then mainstream press and high profile websites is very important.

What shoemoney discusses can really be applied to getting the attention of any influencer be it a JV partner, blogger, journalist, or distributor.

One of the biggest values a PR firm can offer is based on the relationships it has with media. Everyone wants to clamor to the media to get reported on but it's the people who know the journalists that tend to get in the front of the line. It's all about the relationships.
