So I Got Laid Off Today

Yup. I am (was) in mortgage. Go figure.

I think it could possibly be the best thing that ever happened to me. Now I just need to get my wife and kids to see it that way.

    So sorry to hear that.

As long as you can start making money online, you should be just fine. If you have money saved up, good. Now you have the extra time to follow your passion.

    Good luck!

    Now, it's a do-or-die situation.

Remember, make enough money online to pay your bill FIRST, then talk about building wealth online.

If not, you're really gonna run with a scissors...

    Hi Chris,
That is a great attitude to have. The fact that you believe that, will definitely help to lead you to where you may really want to be in your career, perhaps working for yourself. Recently, my 26 year old son was diagnosed with cancer (lymphoma) and my first thought was to freak out. As time goes on, I have learned to be embrace each new experience and above all to be grateful no matter what maybe going on. At times, your brain wants to say, "Do what?", but I am so happy and grateful that life is becoming a wonderful journey! Enjoy yours!

    Hey Chris,

As you know from my thread on this forum, I found myself in a "rug pulled out from under me" place a year ago. It was that place of desperation that got me into Internet Marketing and so far it has paid my bills! That is so good.

My one piece of advice for you now is to set measurable goals and then set up the systems you need to keep you on track! There are so many options in this business . . . but those options can easily become distractions and keep us from accomplishing our goals.

Please stay in touch and feel free to PM me if I can be of any help or encouragement to you!

        Hi Chris

        tell your wife.........

a setback is just a setup for a major comeback!

people with attitudes like ours will go far no matter what happens.

I say - just center yourself, workout your new life plan and get on with it!

Take consistent positive action towards whatever you want to achieve and you will get there. Focus will be a key component and as mentioned above beware of distractions!

You are now on a mission - and your WF family are here to help!
Dont forget to drop by for encouragement and advice anytime you need it - its often enough to know you have extra support whenever you need it!

        Take care - Kym

I'm suddenly feeling a little more anxious myself in what I can only assume is a 'delayed reaction' I suppose.

          • Good luck Chris.

As you said this may end up being the best thing that could happen to you. Personally, I was devastated when I was let go from my first job out of college. However as things turned out I ended getting an offer for a better position with better pay within 2 weeks of being let go. I stayed with that company for 12 great years. Now I am working as a consultant.

Just keep your head up and as the great Charles Barkley once said about not being negative "If it is getting dark, turn on the damn light!".

Can the special knowledge and skills that you have gathered in the mortgage business transfer over to Internet Marketing?

Do you have an "Insiders Secret to Mortgages"?

Try to look at what you already have, and see if you have something that others would pay to know.

That is exactly how I got into IM. Other people told me that they wanted to know what I knew... and they were willing to pay me for it. So I realized if I took that "thing" that I knew... and put it front of millions of people, I would find many more people willing to pay me for it.

    Best of luck to you.

Dude I've been there and I can feel for ya man. I'd been throwing websites up for years with zero success until I was laid off 3 years ago and darn near lost everything. That was the moment the internet went from fun to survival. Being in a specialty trade like you I was forced to earn a living in a market with no jobs(my industry started cutting 3 yrs ago). I used what I already knew instead of spending years to learn the inner workings of something new. You are further ahead than you may realize. Phil

Sometimes, that's when things seem the worse, that you're about to have a big breaktgrough. When your back is against the wall, you have no other choice but to succeed.

I don't know where you're at in this internet mktg journey, but I'm sure you'll find this situation to be a blessing ain disguise in the years to come.

I've got to say Chris that this is probably going to be the best thing to happen to you! Now you will find out a lot more about yourself but more importantly you will find the drive and motivation to succeed online where you will be your own boss and master of your destiny. Having a "real job" can often hinder your success because your mind knows that there is a fall back position. I love back against the wall stuff and I know you are going to succeed.

All the very best, keep us up to date with your journey.

I'm not sure how much time I have left, until Dec 1st or Jan 1st, but they should make a decision soon.

I'm looking forward to the challenge, even though I'm a bit anxious.

Trust me. You will almost feel better when it's over. It's the uncertainty that kills you.

My wife wants me to get another j-o-b so I'm keeping up the good appearances, but I know it's definitely back against the wall time, sink or swim.

I'm always best under pressure so this is actually kind of invigorating. I'm already off to decent start. Cross your fingers.

I think there is a t-shirt business hidden in there somewhere.

Thanks, everyone. I am keeping all options open. It seems that the job market absolutely sucks, which doesn't help things.

Still, I am one persistent son-of-a-gun so I will keep pressing on. Right now I'm spending about 1/2 the day networking for a job and the other half building up my IM business. (OK, it's more like 70/30 in favor of IM)

I am reminded of the story from "Think and Grow Rich" of the oil investors who had begun to strike it rich when they finally hit a vein of oil. Just as they got excited about it, however, they lost the vein and could not find it again.

They searched for weeks and weeks and finally gave up and sold their equipment.

The person that they sold their equipment to FOUND the vein once again...three feet from where the previous owner had stopped drilling.

Don't give up when you could be just three feet away.

Great attitude... now try to learn as much as you can, you'll find plenty of free tutorials online.

Another warrior gave you what I think is a good idea: try to transfer your mortgage knowledge to the Internet. You can offer consultation or good articles on your site and build a list of readers that way.

As soon as possible, maybe you can write an e-book on the subject and sell it to your list.

It is indeed a sad thing to see somebody getting laid off. But your attitude towards the same is amazing. You have astonishing courage and self confidence to come out of this situation. Yes, each situation proves an experience and you get tougher to face any challenge in life. You can make money online and initially don't expect to make fortunes. If you earn enough to pay your bills for the present, it is an achievement. But you can always build upon it.

    Hey Chris,

I so feel your pain and joy, I was a mortgage broker for 7 years until the mortgage co I ran a branch for stopped sending me checks for loans I closed, turned off there phones, and went completely MIA (owners go poof)....

The joy side was doing these mortgages was getting more and more difficult and it really was losing all its fun fighting for checks. I had already begun to work online and make my living here. It is a far happier existence and I do sleep better at night these days knowing I am not at the whim of some other entity I can not control.

Best of luck to you, if you were any good at mortgages you should have no problem taking those marketing skills and applying them to internet marketing.

    • Chris, I know how you feel. I am in the same situation - except I just left my job because of the situation and after 13 years of dreaming of a home business - I am only a few days away from launching my very first product FULLY -which has sold well on WSO as a trial. So, it is a good start.

My advice to you is to draw out a plan and follow those steps closely. When your back is against the wall, you seem to take things a lot more seriously.

Don't go for the "homerun" - go for "singles" and "doubles" first to take care of your rent and food. The very beginning is always the difficult part.

I think soon you are going to be one of those guys on a salespage that says, "I was laid off of my job - but now I make X amount of dollars per month and living my dreams!"

Keep your attitude and altitude soaring. I was laid off almost a year ago by a company that tried to survive on online lead generation for their products ( Log Cabins). Unfortunatly ownership was not part of this forum and did not understand how it is done . I survived by a combination of offline and online activity. I sort of laid myslef off. I left my wife and our internet stores and web design firm. Now I am starting from scratch. She was the designer and brains behind the business. Now I am using what I learned from her and here and other places to make it on my own

See the loss of the job as a positive way forward. Change is exciting, step out of the herd and focus on your success in IM. Use all the knowledge you have gained to start a new business.

You have the right attitude. Your family will come around, I have been through the same challenge, partner was absolutely against my doing IM, after I was sacked. He wouldn't even speak to me and went around muttering some pretty nasty stuff, I ignored it all and stayed with MY plan. Now it's working and he has come around to a point of actually helping me.

Not saying your wife will mutter nasty stuff under her breath Chris but follow YOUR dream YOUR passion and success cannot help but come to you.

Chris, you can make it. If you treat this like a job, until you build your business, it will work. You have the right attitude. Been there before. But remember, with our without a job, you have the opportunity to create your future. Don't make the mistake that other have (me included in the past) - let other things fill your time, or feel you will get around to it later (job search or business building), not revisit your spending and not cut out everything unnecessary. I could go on. To win, if this is you - you don't have time to be mad, sad, ashamed, etc. A new door has opened for you, now walk through it.

Sorry to hear about that. Its tings like this make it kind of scary for me to drop my retirement packet and leave the Army after 20 years. However I am holding strong to my thoughts and idea's and shall move forward just as you will Chris.

Well, it's been a long, long time since I updated this thread...and with good reason.

I have been working my tail off building up my website and my mailing list. I've been participating over in Darren Rowse's paid forums that are part of ProBlogger and made some really good friends.

The really good news, though, is that I'm earning a full-time income from my sites & blogs now!

The income really comes in from everywhere...Amazon, Adsense, Advertising.com, ValueClick, Ebay, you name it...and from lots of different sites and blogs.

There is no one single, major source of income. We now get over 30,000 page views per day combined and you just can't go wrong with that kind of traffic.

The moral of the story is, with every setback comes major opportunity. Don't wait for your ship to come in, swim out to it!

I LOVE your attitude Chris! Now, of course, you have to sell it to your family. I say go for it. Pressures like this can prove to be the catalyst to the most important changes in your life. I certainly wish you the best in whatever you choose to do.

Chris, Ive been though same situation, with complications. The best thing to do for yourself and family is keep your faith and confidence, but you need to have some concrete way to do something to make money, and do it rather quickly before "distractions" set in. Ive learned that setbacks really do create "golden opportunities".
    Peace
