What aspects of marketing did Obama use to secure victory?

I've read recently that Obama is the greatest "new marketer" of our time. One cannot doubt that marketing played a key role in his recent victory. What aspects of marketing do you feel Obama did well on and how did he do this? Are there any areas he did bad on or didn't pick up on? What are your thoughts?

A few thoughts as far as it relates to internet marketing:
    • He has a professional, amazingly good looking web site that is totally focused on marketing.
    • You can't get inside other than through the squeeze page. The squeeze page content changes according to current needs.
    • He (or rather his campaign) wasn't shy to send out promo mails on a daily basis, using very direct calls to action: donate now. Offered goodies for donations, like t-shirts or a trip to his celebration party.
    • He combined IM with hardcore offline marketing. He sent emails and asked people to call and house visit other voters. He even prepared lists of people you could call on his behalf. Man, if he did this in Germany I believe he would be sued out of his mind... No such thing as privacy.
Now that was just the 'technical' stuff. Analyzing the inspiring messages is a book in itself.

Talking about New marketer of our time, you have to be focus and determine. Obama was focus and was determine not to allow anybody stop him. The road to the White House didn't start at the year 2008 but it all started at his first step of thinking of himself as one that can made it .
    thanks

Off topic, but it is true. Obama has been driven from his first political ambitions to end up in the White House. And please, don't post in all bold? Isn't very pleasing to the eyes.

He managed to reach his audience on a mass scale via effective advertising in print and electronic media.

Word of mouth, no doubt, had a huge impact on his audience after the publications of his books which created a viral campaign in support of his background and ideas.

But most importantly, the content of his speeches were highly impacting among a younger generation.

I would fare to say that his campaign strategy was brilliantly executed.

I read a blog post recently (can't remember where, but will post if I find it) that was on same topic and Obama's use of new media. I think he has 100,000+ followers on Twitter and they were kept up to date in almost real time on campaign, announcements, etc sometimes before mainstream media.

This is really engaging you audience and making them part of the process/ helping them buy in.

The more powerful point of post was the blogger has a friend that is a blogger/journalist. When the friend approached the Clinton and McCain campaigns he was turned away from the press pool because he wasn't a "real" member of the press.

Obama's campaign staff let him right into the press pool and he blogged it up and spread the message to who knows how many readers the blogger had, who in turn spread to their base exponentially.

That is a powerful example of how social media is turning the tables on traditional media that has up until last few years controlled the communication channels.

Obama embraced new media instead of shunning it and in turn the general public felt part of the process instead of isolated/disenfranshised. Very powerful example of whats to come in the future.

btw, old media is dying a slow death. My brother in law (who's a smart guy/ aerospace engineer) went into the newspaper business 10yrs ago. He just survived the lastest round of layoffs at the newspaper where he is production mgr.

Every time we speak he tells me how ad revenues are dropping on regular basis, readership is down and it's only going to get worse as a whole new generation that gets their news online will not even give a newspaper or old media a second thought.

That's an interesting observation about Obama's campagin welcoming the bloggers. Although there's lot of unworthy crap in the blogsphere there are also many professionals with a huge following.

And I'm amazed about how huge twitter can get for 1 person.

For those of you interested in the speeches, I found a book yesterday where several of his speeches are published. I'm sure they are somewhere on the web as well, but I'm old fashioned.

So if you like to study inspiring writing to become a bettter (copy) writer yourself, the book title is: Change we can believe in.

Besides the speeches it has a lot of chapters explaining his ideas for the future of America. That, I believe, has bee put together by members of his campaign.

But still it's about 80 pages with his speeches and foreword.

    • There were many aspects of his campaign that were groundbreaking, including the social media elements.

I think a big part was played by his outstanding personal communication skills and it will be interesting to see how those develop over the years.

However a couple of valuable lessons are that he kept to a simple, consistent message and he made many people feel part of what he was doing rather than simply being in the audience.

      Best regards

      Robert

One of my beliefs about Obama's win is that it was possible because he was able to capture the youth's vote by hitting on their desires, allowing them to bring about change. Many adults have given my generation trouble about not standing up for what they believe in, allowing the government to walk all over them by not standing up for the rights like those of our age in the 60s and 70s who stood up against the war. Well, I feel that my generation has stood up for the rights, in a way that may deliver great change in the desired form of the youth: their influence over the election. One cannot doubt that without the youths' support, Obama very well may not have won the election. Now I know that Obama did an incredible job of connecting himself withe the youth, but the youth grabbed ahold of this opportunity and ran with it.

    What do you guys think?
