Is success a genetic thing?

There is a lot going on in the field of genetics with more and more attributes and personal traits being tagged as a result of your genetic setup.

How about success?

Wow...we are going back to the Dukes in Trading Places. Let me go find Billy Ray Valentine.

It has to do with desire, passion and vision. LD is really talking about the Law of Attraction in it's purest form. While we may not own oil fields and castles, if we clear out the clutter, come from a place of gratitude, and believe and receive, we can have what we want.

I'm not going to attack the laws of attraction, manifestation, "The Secret" and things of that nature, but they are a concept of mindset rather than something that is a direct cause of success. This of course goes against what writers on this topic and many followers want to believe.

They are tools that may help some people get closer to their potential level of motivation, which as I said above is one of three necessary elements for success. However, it does not do anything for intelligence or creativity.

Networking is a two way street. You need to have something to offer those you are attempting to network with. Even a simple very likable personality comes down to one's own ingrained social intelligence.

So don't frame this out as being something as simple as seeking out powerful people who can pull some strings for you.

I think there's a certain amount of genetics that play a part (after all, the person who is capable of rapid retention after reading a book can implement it faster than someone who must read the same book 3 times to get the same retention).

However, its the implementation that makes the difference. You can be the wisest man (or woman) in the world - but if you don't DO something with your knowledge, you won't get anywhere!

Success itself is not a trait, but the potential result of various traits. Namely your levels of intelligence, creativity and motivation. All three of those are purely genetic, so you could in effect say that success is genetic.

Certain shortcuts in society poke holes in that to a certain extent though. Should a drug dealer that makes $10 Million be considered successful? What about someone who makes a series of good investments on accident? How about a Warrior that rewrites/plagiarizes material and sells a lot of it?

But yes, our ability to succeed in general is predetermined at birth - which is why I am always skeptical of online business hopefuls that display a constant need for hand holding and a seeming inability to size up situations and act on their own (i.e. people that rely 100% on eBooks and forums to tell them exactly what to do). Do you think the founders of YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Google, etc... spent hours a day at forums waiting for someone to tell them what to do? No. They just went out and did it, probably using the necessary traits for success that they were born with.

Genetics might influence you, but it's ultimately up to you to decide what to do with your life. That's why some billionaire kids go on to be capable heirs while others squander their family's fortune. Kids simply decide to move in different directions, either growing the vast fortune of sucking it up.

If you want to see an interesting contrast study the kids of Cornelius Vanderbilt versus the kids of JD Rockefeller. A stark difference in the collective sense of duties of each group of offspring. JD's kids grew the wealth and distributed massive amounts to philanthropy and Commodore Vanderbilt's kids generally pissed it away without growing the empire.

Success is something personal. It has nothing to do with genetics. Though genetics may play a part in order for the person to be successful, but not the success itself.

I think there are some people who are just gifted for success and can achieve it like nobody's business (no pun intended), while others just work hard for it.

It also depends of what kind of success you're talking about. Like for example overall sucess and living "the dream" or just success in money making, or just success on whatever?

What success is, is just using our inner power to do what we want in your lives.

Success is different for everyone, because everyone has different standards and wants in their lives.

For instance some people value more materialistic items which they think makes them successful and others value more love and connection which they think they are more successful about having that in their lives. And some people think their successful because they can pick up the poop crapped by their dogs better than anyone can.

lol so in short success is something personal that you feel by your own lives standard makes you successful.

I definitely do not think we are born with a set of gene's that dictates who we are. Success has come from someone who use to fight lions in the middle of Africa, and it has also come from a heavily pampered heir to a multi-billion dollar company. Parents who never made more than 50k per year combined have created someone who is a multi-millionaire by the age of 20.

The reason I don't think success is genetic is because success is all about perspective. A farmer who grows enough food to feed himself, his livestock, and his family can be considered successful. Other people would only consider this farmer successful if he started selling his goods all over the country or world.

Success is perspective. Many people on these forums are researching for just enough information to achieve 1k per month in income...or 3k...or 10k...or 20k...or 500k. Either way, each person has their own way of achieving success.

Also, there is a lot of 'New Science' coming up in today's world that talk about how belief can be more influential towards the person you become than genes are. In other words, if you believe from day #1 (or whenever you felt like starting his belief) that you will be a successful Internet Marketer...I think you are more likely to succeed compared to someone who has highly successful Internet Marketing parents and doesn't spend too much time believing in what they are going to do in their life.

I'm sure many will disagree with me on this, but that is the beauty of this diverse world. Everyone has their own idea of how **** needs to get done and how we should look at certain aspects of our lives. In the end, it's all just belief and opinion.

"The race is long, but in the end it's only with yourself."

How will you know when you have reached 'success'? Is that really something you need the right set of genes to know? Or is it something more emotional and less definite than that?

I think we can definitely lay the genetics and inheritance factors to rest here. While they may have some initial influence, it's nothing that vision, courage and tenacity cannot make up for.

I don't agree..If it is, how can some people who came from poor families become greatest personalities ever?

Some people get qualities needed to be successful from inheritance.Even so they have to work hard to achieve their target.

People who don't get anything gifted from inheritance can still be immensely successful if they take the right decision.

Love this topic! I used to think that people who are successful were programmed to be that way. I used to be an onlooker with everything in my life years ago. A book changed my life, which got me to read other books, which got me to study the mind, which got me to condition myself differently. I've found that not only success, but genius, can be built in the minds of pretty much everyone. Coming from a place where 90% of what we know about the human brain, we've known since 1997, people in the past just haven't known how to train their brains in a manner congruent with creating success. Success is something you literally train into your cells. I can tell you that having been a person that believes success is inherent in people, to transforming into a person people often refer to as a prodigy, or the next Tony Robbins, all of these things are built with the right high performance material, learning the way your mind operates, altering your internal processes, massive immersion conditioning, an array of elemental philosophies and great strategy. The old understanding of people being "hard wired," for success, is not only not true, it's absurd and proven wrong. It's limiting to think that success is only for that special few who have some inherent gift. That's probably why so many people have thought that over the years. Like LD said, you can raise your vibration. You can train your own nervous system. It is neuro-scientifically proven (and I've proven it in my life) that you can literally train a millionaire psychology into your body! You just need the right material! (not material that says it's genetic) Thanks for posting this! Huge topic!

This debate is moot without a clear and distinct definition of 'success.' Otherwise, the most this argument will resolve is mere semantics similar to James' squirrel running around the tree.

It's not genetic and yes it's not a trait. Kids of successful people do not become successful too simply because it is in their genes or DNA. Although we often hear some sayin, "it's in the genes!" Relatives and children of successful become successful too simply because the opportunities are there already. It's simply almost handed to them. It's given to them, if not spoon-fed. LOL. Some are just so brilliant too and knowledgeable in the field simply because they get influenced by their parent while growing up. They are lucky they have successful parents, that's why they get successful too.. not beause of their genes.

I owe all my success to taking ACTION!
In fact, if I did not take action, I would have never met awesome people.

its the age old debate Genetics Vs Environment.

The answer is both. A total idiot might even make some money or inherit some, but a fool and his money do part. The question is how they got together in the first place.

On the other side of the spectrum, someone very intelligent who's environment forces them to have some serious survival instincts could be a huge success in the right environment but be too busy trying to defend his life than get the opportunity to succeed.

So it takes some smarts and some luck of being in the right place at the right time to make a successful person. In my opinion of course
