Why I COULDN'T Wait To "FAIL"

Coming from a lineage of entrepreneurs, one thing that was stressed to me very early in my life was that "failing" or a business "not working" should NEVER be a demotivator or an excuse.

The advice went something like this....

"If you want to make a good living, go work in the corporate world. If you want to make a good living, go try starting a business and when it fails, then go start working in the coporate world. If you want to make a GREAT and fulfilling living, then start your first business and try your hardest to make it work...it probably won't, but still try your hardest to make it work. When you exhaust that business then move onto the next and try your hardest to make that work. If it's not working, try harder. Then if it still doesn't work, move onto the next business. Repeat this process and you WILL start that MILLION DOLLAR COMPANY eventually. Chances are you will have to try your hardest on a handful of companies before you find that gem"

The point of the advice is...

-You will likely fail in your first ventures. This should NEVER stop you from trying your hardest on each one. This should NEVER discourage you from trying another company, and another.

-Every "failed" business attempt means you are one step closer to that million dollar baby!

Most hugely successful entrepreneurs started out with some pretty miserable start ups before they found their gem. Try your hardest to make every business you try work, but if it doesnt, it is 100% okay.

Good advice, Kenster. Here's my thoughts on the subject of "failure."

    One of my favourite quotations.

At first I didn't understand it 100%. However, it makes more sense if you truly appreciate that "failure" is something you learn from, and can propel you forward. Essentially, you're doubling your rate of progress.

    See this simple diagram:

    Success 1.0_______/________/___/________Success 3.0

    / =
    Failure/Opportunity/Stepping Stone
Maxwell Maltz (Psycho-Cybernetics) explains it differently, expressing that "failure" is "feedback." He likens the process of succeeding to a torpedo reaching its target by using "feedback" to correct course.

Absolutely, Paulie888. That's another good way of explaining it.

Thank you for the great thread, Swiminsoda.

    Great advice Ken.

Virtually all of the most wealthy entrepreneurs failed miserably before they made it. Nobody is perfect. It's normal to fail and when you can fully embrace failure as an opportunity to learn from you never have to fail again

    Thanks for sharing!

    failed again?
there are so many advise about fail. and the spirit is the same: never surrender.. never surrender and never surrender..
but if we failed to plan, then we plan to fail. so, the best plan is the most important. and we should have plan a, b,c,d and so on..
lets try to make backup plan before we start to doing something...

I'm with Jonathan - as a HUGE believer in the power of the Success Mechanism and learning from your failures, I know that success lies in learning WHY something didn't work and then creating a value proposition powerful enough to make it so that you don't repeat the process.

    Right --

The whole point here is that if you fail (even at a large level like a business that doesnt work out) you need to plug along and try and again. Try your hardest the second time as well. If that doesnt work, then try your third business your hardest.

Most businesses fail. Most successful entrepreneurs failed. ALL successful entrepreneurs kept plugging along and trying their hardest again . Its the nature of the business.

May we all succeed and prosper!
