Top 10 Easy Ways to Recover from Burnout and Stress

Hello fellow Warriors, today I want to talk about an important topic: Burnout. Burnout is probably common in internet business, due to various pressures, deadlines, lack of money and so on...

Burnout is a state of long-term stress. Outcome of burnout is feeling of emotional exhaustion. Burnout means feeling empty, exhausted, without motivation for anything. It is usually experienced when expectations do not match reality, mostly from excessive job demands or other work-related activities.

Stress is a reaction to the increasing demands in life.

It's hardly surprising that many people experience these states on a daily basis. However, these states can affect both your body and your mind. You probably want more from your life. So, to help, in this post I will show you list of top 10 most easily implemented ways to find more fulfillment and get the most out of your workday and life.

[Originally, I wanted this to be a guest post on one blog, but because it was denied, I will post it for my friends Warriors here because I think it has value.]

1. Take Breaks

Try this simple experiment. On one day take short mini-breaks, for only a few minutes, many times during the work day. The next day, be more busy, and take only one or two longer breaks during the whole day. Now compare the results. How did you feel and on what level was your energy and motivation? In most cases, taking frequent breaks of a few minutes has helped people to feel better and prevent negative outcomes related to burnout and stress.

Time needed: Minute or two, several times a day.

Complexity level(on a scale of 1-5, 5 being complex): 2

2. Deep breathing

An ancient simple technique to overcome stress and feeling of burnout. This is the simplest and quickest technique to prevent burnout. First, sit comfortably and observe your breath. Then, just control your own breath. You do not need a big dose of self-discipline for that.

Time needed: 5 minutes or less.

Complexity level: 2

3. Music

Music does wonders for our souls. The most important thing is to find the right type of music that relaxes us. This can be achieved by experiment with different kinds of music until you find the one that's perfect for relaxation.

Time needed: 5 minutes to 2 hours.

Complexity level: 1

4. Walking

Any physical exercises can have a positive impact on your body and mind. I don't say that because I read it somewhere, I know that because of my personal experience. You can do something as simple as walking for 20 minutes and spend the rest of your day in a good mood.

Time needed: 20-30 minutes

Complexity level: 2

5. Sleep

A good quality sleep is for you as water is for the plant. You must have a lot of sleep if you want to feel your best and stay healthy. Sleep is not a difficult way to get rid of overloading and stress, but requires a little more time.

Time needed: 5-10 hours

Complexity level: 1

6. Visualization and Imagination

Nothing difficult. Sit quietly. Close your eyes. Remember some of your accomplishments. Or imagine your favorite smell, taste, sight or an image. Use all the senses you can to create a compelling, positive picture in your head.

Time needed: 5-30 minutes.

Complexity level: 2

7. Minimalism

This is a way of living. If you remove material possessions, clutter and distractions, you will have less things to cause stress.

Time needed: Undefinable.

Complexity level: 2 (you just remove clutter)

8. Sex

Yes, sex can be a great way to relax. Just do not overdo it.

Time needed: a couple of minutes to a couple of days (?!)

Complexity level: Difficult to evaluate

9. Turn to positive people.

Finding support in positive people is always a good way to relax. The only problem can happen if the state of people in your environment is not so positive. In other words, we don't have control over other peoples state, and therefore we do not know whether we will encounter in a positive reception.

Time needed: Undefinable

Complexity level: Undefinable, between 2-5

10. Travel

A change of environment and people around you can relax your mind. Just imagine how much would you reduce the stress if you were on a beach and drink delicious cocktails... Of course, this can be a challenge. Some people has overcrowded schedule. Someone has a family. Someone has a company or a regular job and can not go so easily. Also, the travel requires a lot of time, one day at least. That is why, I put this in last place on our list.

Time needed: 1-100 days

Complexity level: 4.5

Conclusion

Each method has its advantages and disadvantages. Use each carefully, and in stressful situations try just one method. If it works, great. If not, go on and select another method. Experiment until you develop a collection of tools to remove the stress and burnout, and you will enjoy life like never before.

Now I'm interested in your opinion, do you agree with this top 10 list as I put together, or would you choose something different?

Good luck friends!

I agree and use many of these techniques on a daily basis.

My favorite strategy is taking a 10 minute break every hour on the hour to sit and meditate. Sometimes I follow it up with a 5 minute.

It's amazing how pulling back frequently kills stress and allows good things to flow to your with greater ease.

    Thanks for sharing!

I would also add a hobby there, preferably the one that includes handicrafts.
When you craft something, you can see the results of your work right away, and it makes you feel more accomplished. The process itself is also very relaxing and enjoyable, and it's a nice way to switch attention, to let your brain rest a bit.

      All 10 tips are crucial.

Burnout is a severe issue that we should all be aware of, and learn to prevent/dissolve.

This is such a wonderful post because
regular practice of any one of these
    methods can be life changing.

For me personally, the key to my
    success has been steady practice
of visualization and using my imagination.

When I imagine the end result and
walk in that feeling of my wish already
fulfilled, it comes to pass quickly -
    sometimes within hours.

It's amazing how getting rid of stress,
worry, and doubt can make a difference
    in your life.

For a long time, I was suffering from stress to the point where I was completely burnt out, physically, mentally and emotionally. Medications prescribed by my doctor and psychologists only helped for a short time. I began to realize that I needed to tackle the problem at its roots and went to look for alternative methods. And I came across the ancient Indian healing method "Ayurveda" and initially I was very surprised that apparently they already knew about the symptoms of stress thousands of years ago. After long deliberation I finally booked an Ayurvedic treatment in Sri Lanka - and what can I say? It was the key experience par excellence. For a whole 2 weeks, I devoted myself only to yoga, meditation and enjoyed the ultra-relaxing Ayurvedic massages. Granted, the Ayurvedic herbal medicine was not always to my taste, but it actually did help.
After 14 days I was like new, for the first time since years I felt regenerated, rejuvenated and full of energy and joy of life. The time I allowed myself there was important because it gave me a chance to think about my own life and finally I realized where I can make fundamental changes. This was more than a year ago and I feel still good. I can only recommend Ayurveda, even if you are skeptial about it.
I was in a hotel called Paragon in Sri Lanka, but there are many others which are surely just as good. However, I do encourage anybody to do this in Sri Lanka or India, because being far away from the every day problems and stress at home makes it much easier to look at your life from a new perspective.

I think that a more soothing word would be having a romatic time with your wife or spouse. But its alway a matter of different "strokes" for different "folks."

Great post Marko, very useful tips. I feel burned out right now, just through all the things I want to get done. I use a few of those methods to relax, and should try to use more in future. Just started trying out meditation. I love walks to get some fresh air and blow out the cobwebs. I workout 3 times a week which is really good for destressing and giving my mind a break from thinking about work.

Nice site btw, and you are a fellow TED fan It's interesting that vid on where ideas come from because quite often I feel more stressed actually trying to think about a "big" problem or idea when I should just focus on getting stuck in to the work and having faith in the process to reveal the solution. As the guy suggests, ideas don't necessarily happen in one "eureka" moment, but rather fade into view as our thoughts make new connections and patterns over time. It's a good argument for learning by doing too, as opposed to overthinking things and getting nothing done. A practical solution to combat information overload.

Here is my number 1 tip: Take special breaks that include excerises to relieve body tension.

They include, deep breathing, and closing your eyes. Massaging your eyes is effective if you are on the computer for awhile. Shake your wrists so you don't develop and retain the tension in your hands, from typing.

These are simple things, that if we are aware of, will definitely improve your quality of life, day to day.

    Hope this was helpful.
