Top 10 Easy Ways to Recover from Burnout and Stress
Burnout is a state of long-term stress. Outcome of burnout is feeling of emotional exhaustion. Burnout means feeling empty, exhausted, without motivation for anything. It is usually experienced when expectations do not match reality, mostly from excessive job demands or other work-related activities.
Stress is a reaction to the increasing demands in life.
It's hardly surprising that many people experience these states on a daily basis. However, these states can affect both your body and your mind. You probably want more from your life. So, to help, in this post I will show you list of top 10 most easily implemented ways to find more fulfillment and get the most out of your workday and life.
[Originally, I wanted this to be a guest post on one blog, but because it was denied, I will post it for my friends Warriors here because I think it has value.]
1. Take Breaks
Try this simple experiment. On one day take short mini-breaks, for only a few minutes, many times during the work day. The next day, be more busy, and take only one or two longer breaks during the whole day. Now compare the results. How did you feel and on what level was your energy and motivation? In most cases, taking frequent breaks of a few minutes has helped people to feel better and prevent negative outcomes related to burnout and stress.
Time needed: Minute or two, several times a day.
Complexity level(on a scale of 1-5, 5 being complex): 2
2. Deep breathing
An ancient simple technique to overcome stress and feeling of burnout. This is the simplest and quickest technique to prevent burnout. First, sit comfortably and observe your breath. Then, just control your own breath. You do not need a big dose of self-discipline for that.
Time needed: 5 minutes or less.
Complexity level: 2
3. Music
Music does wonders for our souls. The most important thing is to find the right type of music that relaxes us. This can be achieved by experiment with different kinds of music until you find the one that's perfect for relaxation.
Time needed: 5 minutes to 2 hours.
Complexity level: 1
4. Walking
Any physical exercises can have a positive impact on your body and mind. I don't say that because I read it somewhere, I know that because of my personal experience. You can do something as simple as walking for 20 minutes and spend the rest of your day in a good mood.
Time needed: 20-30 minutes
Complexity level: 2
5. Sleep
A good quality sleep is for you as water is for the plant. You must have a lot of sleep if you want to feel your best and stay healthy. Sleep is not a difficult way to get rid of overloading and stress, but requires a little more time.
Time needed: 5-10 hours
Complexity level: 1
6. Visualization and Imagination
Nothing difficult. Sit quietly. Close your eyes. Remember some of your accomplishments. Or imagine your favorite smell, taste, sight or an image. Use all the senses you can to create a compelling, positive picture in your head.
Time needed: 5-30 minutes.
Complexity level: 2
7. Minimalism
This is a way of living. If you remove material possessions, clutter and distractions, you will have less things to cause stress.
Time needed: Undefinable.
Complexity level: 2 (you just remove clutter)
8. Sex
Yes, sex can be a great way to relax. Just do not overdo it.
Time needed: a couple of minutes to a couple of days (?!)
Complexity level: Difficult to evaluate
9. Turn to positive people.
Finding support in positive people is always a good way to relax. The only problem can happen if the state of people in your environment is not so positive. In other words, we don't have control over other peoples state, and therefore we do not know whether we will encounter in a positive reception.
Time needed: Undefinable
Complexity level: Undefinable, between 2-5
10. Travel
A change of environment and people around you can relax your mind. Just imagine how much would you reduce the stress if you were on a beach and drink delicious cocktails... Of course, this can be a challenge. Some people has overcrowded schedule. Someone has a family. Someone has a company or a regular job and can not go so easily. Also, the travel requires a lot of time, one day at least. That is why, I put this in last place on our list.
Time needed: 1-100 days
Complexity level: 4.5
Conclusion
Each method has its advantages and disadvantages. Use each carefully, and in stressful situations try just one method. If it works, great. If not, go on and select another method. Experiment until you develop a collection of tools to remove the stress and burnout, and you will enjoy life like never before.
Now I'm interested in your opinion, do you agree with this top 10 list as I put together, or would you choose something different?
Good luck friends!
