Medication has always side effects and there are times that those people who often take it during their periods of anxiety happens to become dependent on those medications.

I agree with raradra. There are things and ways that can be done to prevent and heal anxiety. Reading a good book can help a lot, and being with people who can understand you can also change your moods. Doing things that are good for many and having a vacation on a beach or any scenic places can really help that much.

  • Hi lilphilupt,

Sorry to hear that you are having anxiety. I used to, but in the end it was conquered...

Here are some of the things that I've found really help...

Balancing your life is very important. Don't spend too much time in front of the computer. Other areas you need to build on are hobbies, sports, social, health, exercise etc.

Exercise everyday, go for walks of an hour or more, or even half an hour. Get a lot of sunlight and fresh air. Get on the phone with friends or family often... Have regular talks and social interaction.

With regards to health, sleep early, wake up early. Eat healthy - raw fruits and vegetables, a good balanced diet.

When working, take regular breaks throughout the day. Stop using the computer several hours before your sleeping time, and make sure you thoroughly relax yourself before you sleep. Clear your mind of all thoughts of work.

Our bodies unconsciously tighten throughout the day due to stress, but we need to consciously and purposely relax it. Else the tension will still stay on.

Regularly read motivating and inspiring literature. Anything that catches your attention, write it down on cue cards, and keep those cards with you. Whenever you have the time read through them, and it will remind and inspire you... After 30 days you'll feel a good difference

"If you change your thoughts you will change your life".
The mind and how you use it can either destroy your life or empower you to act and take control and attract in your life the things you truly want. If you think negative thoughts and focus in your mind on the things you don't want or don't want to have happen in your life, your life will carry on in the same way and you will attract unwanted things. However, if you change your thoughts, you will change your life and you will emerge from a stressful, depressive, anxious state to one of a brighter and happier future.

If my work load is major and stressful, I tend to just slow down. It takes the anxiety away and I can get back to work with no problems. Also, medication is known to help, but in some cases it isn't always a help.

I think coping with anxiety is different for each person, you just have to take your mind off it by doing something.I used to suffer with very scary panics attacks which got so bad they prevented me from leaving my house but after time I learnt to control them by concentrating on my breathing and slowing it down which stops you producing the adrenaline and allows you to calm down,I also found taking showers helped me.

Regular, every day "anxiety" is different (I think) than what you are facing. People get anxious about things all the time. Having a little anxiety when you are dealing with stressful things (work, family, relationships, kids, etc.) is normal. When that anxious feeling turns into sheer, out of the blue PANIC is when it turns into a problem.

I was diagnosed with panic disorder 10 years ago. It started 5 years before that and at some points it was so bad I couldn't even leave my house.

The hardest thing is that if someone doesn't have it, they have no idea what it's like. The best way to describe it is if you could imagine what someone would feel like 10 seconds before they knew their plane was going to crash, that's how someone with panic disorder feels at any given time. The scariest thing is that it can happen at any time without any warning.

The good news is that anxiety disorders (mood disorders in general) are the easiest psychological disorders to treat. According to my doc, the success rate of treatment is like 98%.

For me, a combination of CBT (behavior changes) and medication (Xanax and an SSRI) did the trick.

I lived with anxiety all my life and for a period of about 10 years I was having multiple anxiety attacks per day. My last anxiety attack was 2 months after I started treatment. I haven't had one since and that was 10 years ago.

Xanax works, so do SSRI's (prozac, paxil, celexa, etc.) but the key is changing your behavior and the way you react to stressors. You may need to be on meds for an extended period of time but they help and the side effects usually subside with time.

10 years ago I couldn't even drive in a car with another person. Last weekend I went skydiving. Ask questions and find solutions. They are available.

    EDIT
And one more thing. Going to the doctor to get help is the hardest step. Once you do that, it's actually a pretty easy road.

I used to suffer from terrible panic and anxiety problems. The meds seemed to make it even worse (research the "rebound effect" of Xanax and similar drugs like Ativan, Valium, Librium, and Klonopin.)

Meditation and yoga REALLY helped as well as focusing on the present and future (with a life coach) rather than obsessing about past traumas (as was the case in therapy.)

Good luck. I know first-hand just how debilitating panic and anxiety can be.

    Peace, love, happiness, and prosperity,
    Stephanie

I have no idea if I REALLY have anxiety, because I've never been to the doctor for it... But I get hella anxious sometimes, just waiting for things, like for a coaching client to call, my turn to talk at an event, etc...

I use to blaze it up (oh yeah, you know what I'm talking about ) back in the day to help myself relax, & fyi it works freakin wonders!... But it's been a while since I've done that...

But what I do to relax now is drink decaffeinated tea, & go on facebook. It's therapy for me - not sure what it is about it, but it helps me keep my mind off of whatever I'm anxious about.

Forgive me if I'm offending anyone - like I said, I have no idea if I actually have anxiety... I'm in a health & wellness class, so I know what it is, and we talk about it all the time, but I still have not been actually diagnosed with it... So if I'm mistaken, just let me know.

Unfortunately I am familiar with severe anxiety. Fortunately I found a people to talk to, like you are doing now, and made a point to do a "healthy" activity every time I felt anxious - after a while I recognized the anxiety earlier on in the process, and finally got it under control. Paxil helps as well!

All of us have demons to face, i think everybody at one point in their life suffers from uncertainty and insecurity. that's the time that we should apply a positive attitude... and of course our faith in GOD, cause everything in our life
    is uncertain.
Try to read inspirational thoughts and uplifting verses, and always think of those people who are less fortunate and who has a bigger problem than you are. those who doesn't have a roof under their heads, those who are stricken with cancer and LASTLY count your blessing, focus on what you have and not the things you dont have.

I feel ya. I have delt with an anxiety disorder for many years. I now believe that if you have anxiety, it can stem from a physical condition. But mostly from one or more of these things. Low self esteem, lack of confidence, and or negative self talk. I now believe that the negative self talk is the single most self destructive behavior that we do to ourselves without realizing the self destruction that it causes. I have the best book for self talk that i have ever found. If you will apply this easy reading books teachings it will change your world. I have it in PDF format on my external hard drive that i will share if someone is serious about making real changes.

    Hi there,
My anxiety was quite specific, being social anxiety disorder, a *very* common but *very* misunderstood condition. I developed it when I was about 4 or 5 years old and I overcame it when I was 21. I've just turned 23 and the last couple of years have been the best of my life, it is amazing how much I feel I can now achieve when I don't have anxiety determining *every* decision I make.

I am currently battling with depression and post traumatic stuff so I'm enjoying reading the tips here, plus I know I can overcome this if I overcame a severe 16 year anxiety.

My anxiety was severe enough to the point where I often couldn't leave my room... let alone the house. I couldn't even hand in a resume, let alone get a job. I failed classes because I was too scared to turn up to school. I do still need to improve in some areas, like making phone calls, but it is now mild and no longer controls my life! A few years ago I would have laughed if someone said I would one day no longer feel like this. But now I've overcome it I know it's possible. I also did it without medication.

Since this is a specific anxiety, I don't know if my techniques will work for you, but they might:
    * Talk about it to someone who understands. Not someone who's going to laugh or just tell you to 'get over it'. I had a therapist and honestly I didn't find the techniques or CBT stuff too helpful. But the fact that I could talk to her without judgement... I poured my heart out and after that, I felt like I could now move on. Finally getting through to those close to me exactly what I was going through was a major step in me moving on.

    * Get a hobby. Something that you're not embarrassed to talk about in front of others. Birdkeeping was my hobby, I'm a listener, not a talker, and it gave me something to say when people asked. It made me happier within myself having an interest and that alone built confidence and enjoyment. Plus having parrots gave me something to talk to which helped in verbally expressing myself.

    * The big one (for my specific anxiety anyway)... slowly, gently get forced out of your comfort zone. Don't cold turkey throw yourself out there (none of this 'face your fears' stuff), for most people that does more harm than good and ends in panic attacks. When I began to feel uncomfortable, I turned that into something exciting: it meant I was leaving my comfort zone and getting better! It's all about slowly stretching your comfort zone.
I was able to get a job through methods of no-pressure, no-judgement, yet not being able to turn back. This all snowballed into me improving faster and faster until I really did feel like I just had one big hurdle left and then I was through. I almost literally felt I was being pulled back by a few more frayed ropes, ready to snap. Then eventually, I crossed that last hurdle as well and it was massive relief.

    * Having a spiritual life is important I think, whether you are religious or not. Even just the law of attraction, positive thinking, whatever. I'm a natural-born pessimist so I did have to train myself to think in a certain way but it's pretty much habit now.

As for motivation, well. Having depression makes motivation difficult. But one thing that really gets me enthusiastic about work is when I start thinking about how much I don't want to have my job or lifestyle I currently have, and how if I get this work done as quick as I can, I can have the life I want sooner.

Sorry for the massive ramble!! Not sure if it was even helpful, haha.

      drinking helps a lot...
too bad it makes depression so much worse

I'm sure doing something creative like playing violin or drawing must help. Problem is when I have bad anxiety I just can't stay in one place or concentrate on anything.
And medication like xanax can only be a short term solution unless you want to take it your whole life constantly upping the doze. Benzos are very addictive.
Running and heavy exercise in local gym helps a lot.

AT OP:I totally understand that. In our industry we're often trying new things and there is always a lot to learn which gets on your mind. Some nights I admit I did have trouble sleeping when I was really trying to take off.
On a side note, exercise will seriously clear your mind and make you feel 100 times better. Once I went for a run in the back roads at midnight because I couldn't sleep. The fresh air and moonlight made me feel a lot better.

Lot's of my clients who have anxiety come with questions about methods for relaxing...which is okay. However, the objective is to get to the root of anxiety. Managing anxiety is a coping mechanism, but it's just a band-aid. Anxiety can be (I'm not supposed to say cured here) gotten rid of...

You have to find the root of the anxiety and work on changing the belief pattern that's causing it. Of course, being that this is my area of expertise, I'd recommend the free personal growth course I created...here's the link.

I have generalized anxiety and depression and what helps me the most is exercising, meditating or deep breathing techniques, and reading books.

I think a major cause of anxiety is analyzing things and thinking way too much. You need to learn to slow down and clear your mind and focus on the present. When my anxiety gets really bad like if I feel like I'm going to have a panick attack, I focus on my breathing and take deep breaths inhaling through my nose and exhaling out my mouth counting to 10.

I think every entrepreneur has a certain level of anxiety. That whole "not knowing where the next payday is coming from" kind of thing.

For me, there are a few things that work better than others.

    1. I stand up every 45 minutes or so. Walk around the room. Get away from the computer.
    2. I will only allow myself 8 hours devoted to IM. Then 8 hours of sleep. And 8 hours of something/anything NOT work related.

Something to keep in mind - our brains still have a lot of leftover caveman programming left in them. When you get stressed or anxious, it triggers the same fight or flight response as when our anscestors faced a sabertoothed tiger.

The body shuts down anything not directly related to getting away or fighting for our lives.

That includes: appetite, sexual drive, creativity.

So, when you're stressed or anxious and are trying to figure out a way to make IM work for you, you're trying to push a boulder up a VERY LARGE hill.

Take time for yourself and relax a bit. Get away from the computer every so often. That'll do wonders.

I have had something very bad happen to my internet business due to some dirty game from some competitor and after making thousands monthly, I ended up with NO work and completely broke (and in debt). This is not when anxiety started,it started after failing in my continuous attempts to rise my business again. At that time, I started developing a serious anxiety, took some medicines and still nothing went better. I only started to get better when I decided to drop off dreams of making 1,000$ daily and just go do ANYTHING and it was article marketing/freelance writing and the day I started working all the anxiety went away. My advice for everyone is to find what was making anxious and solve it rather than swallow one medicine after the other and then having to cope with their side effects.

There are a few medical conditions that can cause anxiety. But, IMO most people create the physical and psychological symptoms of anxiety from their own thought patterns embedding them in his own subconscious mind. IMO for some reason some people are more prone to this than others. Probably stemming from early childhood interpretations of our perceived experiences forming how we deal with adversity in our internal and external world. Habitual negative self talk is a killer of progress. Not having a strong understanding and satisfaction for who we are as a person and where we fit in. People with strong religious beliefs generally are less susceptible to having an anxiety disorder. We dont even realize how these negative thoughts are affecting us and controlling us on a subconscious level. We are constantly reinforcing our thoughts by what we think about most of the time. If these thoughts go against our core values and beliefs, anxiety can manifest itself. Low self confidence and self esteem is another anxiety generator. Anyway, thats just a little of my 2 cents... First time I came in to this section of the forum I thought: " Not the area for me, probably too much hype and BS."
This is merely the 2nd thread I have visited and I must say I admire the honesty of some of the people here.
I have family members who suffer from anxiety and I can hardly get them to talk about it.
I hope you find your solution...
I also enjoy video games when my mind is kinda down, going outdoors for a walk, a jog.
The #1 would be seeing my friends. I dont have many but they are close ones for which I am greatfull to have.
Earlier today I went to see Jackass 3d with one of my best friends.
I laughed so hard for over an hour, definitly a fun time
One last thing I want to say is that friends can be made in the most unexpected places. I have friends whom iv'e met simply walking in the street or eating a pizza, playing ping-pong, you never know.
        Go find them!

        • My long term illness that started in 1999, started out as a panic attack and depression. Later I started getting more and more different illnesses both physical and mental. From joint and muscle pain to not being able to leave the house, or pick up the telephone. By the time 2008 came around I had 32 different illnesses that were all being treated differently. Over the years I was given Xanax for my panic attacks. I only used it when my panic attack was uncontrollable. For the most part I used meditation and yoga to control it.

I remember February 13, 2008. I sat in my comfy chair in mind numbing pain. Every joint in my body, a shock of pain, then numbness. I wanted to die. Literally I needed to die. I got so frustrated I yelled out to God and said "Take my life or take my pain. I refuse to continue living anymore!" Then I continues sitting their in pain, not wanting to move.

Later there was a commercial on TV about a news report. It was about a lady who was in a wheel chair that lost her ability to walk and had joint and muscle pain due to an unknown illness and now she was fully recovered. The illness was linked to diet soda. I don't drink diet soda, but I stayed to watch it anyway. They talked about a chemical called Aspartame. Which meant nothing to me. Until they flashed one of those blue packet of Equal on the screen. I USED Equal! I said it couldn't be. Not this little packet of powder.

I was in so much pain I said I'll try anything. Then next day I didn't use Equal in my coffee. During the day my pain decreased. Two days later all my other symptoms vanished. I could pick up the phone, leave the hours, my acid reflux disease, GONE. My Muscle and joint pain GONE! My panic attacks and depression GONE!

So I researched Aspartame and found that every symptom I had was a side effect of the chemical and no doctor is going to diagnosis this because it not a real illness. According to FDA reports their are 94 different side effect caused by this chemical. Yet the FDA has certified it safe. The manufactures of Aspartame have put enough PR and money into the system to make it called the "Great Internet Myth".

Aspartame is in over 200,000 products and it isn't always on the label.

In 1999 I had my own company and career. I was doing so well. My dentist told me to stop drinking coke, it was staining my teeth. Stupidly I switched to coffee, with Equal so I wouldn't gain weight, bt stains teeth just as well. Silly me. Worse thing that ever happened in my life. The panic attacks and anxiety that started I immediately connected to my father who I was taking care of and was dieing. I never made the connection to my diet.

I now try to eat naturally. I also do a lot of research on food contaminates. I don't care if the FDA says it safe. Even if you don't consume Aspartame and have anxiety. It could be another chemical. Our food sources are very contaminated. From hormones to mercy to antibiotics, and insect poison. Our drinking water isn't safe either. Traces of anti-depressants, pain killers, and other drugs have been found through the US in major cities. I know it sounds like conspiracy theory. But now when I hear those two words, I have to wonder how much money is being spent by companies for "perception management".

Final stage of Aspartame poisoning is cancer. Brain cancer, lymphoma, and one other which I forget. Two of my lymph nodes in my neck are the size of a golf ball and a ping pong ball. So far benign, and I hope it stays that way.

If you are having anxiety attacks, do the best you can to find the cause. Xanax and doctors don't cure you. They mask the illness. That's what I learned during my decade of treatment. Plus as long as you are ill, they continue to make money. So where is the incentive to cure you.

        So true!

Internet can be a very overwhelming place, and most IMers have so much to deal with.....fears and doubts give rise to anxiety.

When faced with information overload or a stressful hour/day, I just take a break and read some comic stuff online, call up a really funny friend (we all have one of those ) or watch some funny animal videos - they always crack me up!

Even reading a gossip rag involving your fave celeb could be stress-busting.....if the anxiety is due to something as trivial as a pesky colleague or traffic stress.

But if the anxiety goes far deeper and is causing you to lose sleep, my advice would be to seek some pro help.

        Just my two cents.

        Thanks.

Well, when stressed out trying to get a site to work with IE 6, the web developers cocktail works well. It's basically a martini with a few modifications. You start with a bottle of premixed martini and pour 4 ounces (or as required) in a large beer mug. (That's because of the 'as required' clause.) Instead of an olive add a Tylenol and a Xanax (or as required)

On the serious side, try watching a few of the videos of this speaker.

    Words of Peace Global

He has been my favorite speaker for a lot of years. Extremely high quality talks, and he is so focused, I tend to just sit back, relax, and enjoy.

I think it just takes about 5 minutes to realize that there is something a bit different happening in them.

I suffered from social anxiety for many years and recently got help for it a year ago. I got cognitive behavioral therapy and my life is totally turning around. I don't waste lot of time anymore seeking a cure for my anxiety. I feel free.

I have "social anxiety," which goes along with major depression, sleep problems and cluster headaches (which stem from problems with the sleep cycle). The best tool I've used to deal with it was reading a book called "Painfully Shy" by a psychiatrist named Barbara Markway. I'm not completely healed yet, but well on my way and that book has been a great start.

I find the best thing is to find a good meditation class - it's seriously better than drugs and much healthier - by good I mean one that focuses on breathing and that goes for at least an hour (preferably 1.5 - 2 hours to give you the time to do a long deep meditation). Also be careful about the shady religious practitioners or classes that cost lots of money. There are some online classes if you don't have anything nearby e.g. Online Meditation Course -- learn to meditate, easy, simple | Meditation Oasis (no aff, I just know them because they make an iphone app that I sometimes use and found to be ok).

The key really is in the breathing, slowing your breathing down and building up your practice so you are doing it for at least a 20 minute stretch (if you can do a 40-60 minute practice every day, this gives tremendous benefits). Start at 5 minutes and then build up to longer at your own pace. Learn how to breathe from your diaphragm and count the breaths in and out - slowing them down if you can.

Don't worry about getting to that meditative place, if it happens, it happens but you get heaps of benefit by just slowing down and focussing on your breathing.

I wish you all the best with it. :-)

At the risk of sounding crazy...

I was diagnosed 6 or so years ago with dysthymia and dissociative identity disorder. The following 3-4 years were spent doing nothing but trying to kill these feelings. I started abusing Klonopin regularly. An average dose of Klonopin generally is 1mg-2mg twice daily. I was taking roughly 15mg on average daily.

The last few days of my drug abuse can barely be remembered. I generally stayed inside of my motel/apartment and just either slept or tried to top my high with something else.

By the time social workers came to my door I weighed 98 pounds and being 6'1 brings the word "twig" really to mind. Hah. But they said given me more time I would have been dead.

Now without the use of prescriptions, while they did help me destroyed me, I have been trying to find new ways to cope. The universe isn't helping me very much with this. To put it short my insurance canceled and I won't be getting any state funding anytime soon.

I have found some very nice herbal remedies that help me on a daily basis for panic/stress/anxiety.

Kava Kava is simply wonderful. It comes in extract form and cap form. I enjoy the extract since it can be placed in tea and it tastes sweet. A good dose will sedate anxiety and reduce the stressors of the day.

GABA can be very nice and quick. I picked up a 100 tab bottle of the quick dissolve tablets, which allows easier access to the blood stream.

Others that work very well are Valerian Root and St. John's Wort.

All of these really seem to work really well in time of need. I hope someone in the future can use them if need be.

Don’t forget about the dirt and the sun,
the smell and the taste of the air from the ocean.
How could you forget about the moon and the stars,
and the warmth of the summer on a dark starry night.
