The secret to success? Work, Work, Work & Luck

Malcolm Gladwell has a new book out called Outliers: The Story Of Success.

In this he writes about how those that have excelled in their chosen field have done so not though any natural gift, but through hard work.

He puts a number on the amount of hours needed: 10,000

This idea - that excellence at a complex task requires a critical, minimum level of practice - surfaces again and again in studies of expertise. In fact, researchers have settled on what they believe is a magic number for true expertise: 10,000 hours.

"In study after study, of composers, basketball players, fiction writers, ice-skaters, concert pianists, chess players, master criminals," writes the neurologist Daniel Levitin, "this number comes up again and again. Ten thousand hours is equivalent to roughly three hours a day, or 20 hours a week, of practice over 10 years... No one has yet found a case in which true world-class expertise was accomplished in less time. It seems that it takes the brain this long to assimilate all that it needs to know to achieve true mastery."

I've read about this idea before. Gladwell isn't a particularly original writer, but he does have a fluent style and always carries out thorough research

In the extract linked to above he details the biographies of Bill Gates and Bill Joy.

He also writes about there is always a luck factor as you need to be at the right place at the right time...

An idea like this is both liberating and depressing: you too can succeed but only if you have the right number of hours to donate to your goal.

Good post. Brian Tracy says it takes one hour of reading a day to be an expert in three years.

I know some very successful people who have never read a motivational book (so they claim). They also do not have written goals, though they have mental goals.

They work hard and are focused on what they want.

Funny because I felt [and was taught] that to become successful I had to work SMART and not HARD. So that pretty much meant I would use the leverage of other peoples skills and just be an entrepreneur working on strategies.

i have a sign above my desk, I'm looking at it right now that says- Produce more than you consume. Not in context of more, more, more but in context of give more than you take. I have to be mindful of this on daily basis. My combo of distraction and insatiable desire to learn all I can forces me to limit my inputs to a few hrs a day and outputs at least 10x that.

      Hello Omari Taylor here,

Hard work and consistency is the way to success. But how many people are really willing to put in 10,000 hours? I know I am. And if you want to be successful at anything you must be willing to do what it takes, even though it should definitely not take you that long for you become very successful online. The only thing is I don't think you can ever master online marketing because it's always changing and if you are open minded you will always continue to learn and be creative with your marketing strategies.

  • That number pans out with Brian Tracy's estimate of about 2 hours per day; the difference being that Brian Tracy asserts that at such a pace only 2 years are required to have a world-class level knowledge of any subject. Ten years at that pace should easily (pardon the word 'easily') place one in the top 10 on the planet. Leveraged properly, that sort of sustained effort should place one in a position of great wealth.

If the terms "the harder you work the more successful you are" is true, then all of the factory labors from the third world would be one of the most successful groups of people on earth. Because they work really hard. Likewise, internet marketers who let the system and automation do most of the work while they enjoy their vacation on the beach would be one of the most unsuccessful race.

And yet, that's not the case, is it?

Maybe the statement should be: "The secret to success: Smart work, delegate, automate, and luck"

We can't rule out the "luck" factor.

And to increase your luck, pray and give more. Make the world a better place.

Who says that? You? I don't believe it.

I am pretty successful according to my own standards and although I did work hard enough initially, I didn't make as much as I would like to make.

Then all of a sudden I decided I would do only what brought positive changes in other people's lives and businesses in particular, and charge them just a minor fraction of whatever improvements they saw because of my effort. After that I started improving every aspect of my life... EVERY ASPECT. Health, Wealth, Love, Relationships, Impact, Sprituality.. everything.

But.. I never said I would make ALL that effort myself. I just said that the required effort would be made... Even if that means I have to give away more than half the money that I charge.

Hope what I am pretty clear with this... I outsource most of my work. To experts. And experts charge me a fraction of what I charge my clients. Now, this is the situation in most cases.

The fact remains.. Task Experts (Like Graphioc Designers, Article Writers and most of all other freelancers) are generally not great strategists. I am. That makes all the difference.

    -Lakshay

P.S. Hardwork is BullSh1t.. especially when its hard to concentrate on the task at hand on which you need to work hard.

Agree wholeheartedly with the notion that luck is something we all create (and many times talent). While I think it's fun to think I was born a good illustrator/artist, the reality is I grew up watching my Dad after taking an interest in it and have been doing it since I was a kid!

Personally, I do not believe in luck. Success definitely comes with hard work, but hard work doesnt neccesarily bring about success.

To be successful, you need both work hard and smart. You need to know what you want, focus, persist and never give up till you succeed. As Winston Churchill said :Never Give up, never ever give up: that is one of the main keys to success.
