a book that changed your life?

I'm sure many of us have read a few self-improvement books, such as "Think and Grow Rich", "Science of Getting Rich" etc.

Would you say that there was a particular that was the mostly helpful and changed your life forever? What's that book you think everyone should read?

It's hard for me to pick just one book that has changed my life the most. I used to run a bookstore with my brother, and have read (literally) thousands of books.

Rich Dad, Poor Dad was one of the first business-related books I ever read. It helped me realize that my biggest enemy against success is myself.

Looking back, however, I think the book that had the greatest impact on my life was a little 200 page paperback called Zen Soup. It's a collection of quotations all relating to different aspects of Zen. I've held on to it for about 10 years now, and I can still find something useful every time I pick it up.

The book that changed my life was a small 6 page book
from Emmett Fox called "The Golden Key".

I found it in my fathers apartment just after he died and
set it aside for almost a year.

Then when I lost my job and was unemployed for 7 months
I was doing some house cleaning and came across the book
      again.

I applied what I read in the book and went out and landed 3
new jobs as an English coach (I live in Germany) and these
jobs paid me 3 times more hourly than my previous jobs.

I also applied it to my career and I now enjoy hosting
      Germany's first All-English Stand-up Comedy Show, which
had been a childhood dream of mine to be a comedian.

If you can find a copy, grab it and read it's 6 powerful pages
(takes less than 15 minutes) and apply it. You'll be glad you did.

      Have an awesome day.

    Hi,
    How are you doing?
Thank you for this topic, it interests me a lot I would add in your library a book of James Allen called As A Man Thinketh. There are lots of book which allows people to have life changing but we have to know that the change also depends on the personality of the person. I mean, it depends of his confidence, ambition and also his relationship. If you are negative or you tend to believe everything without checking out well, you will have life changing but not as you expected. We also should know that we should have a inside positivity, a belief of the book. It exists tons of books on the market which allow us to have life changing but I remind you it depends on your character and your "inside trust.

While I speak about it. I let you know that I recently wrote a book which mention this author As a man thinketh. I am glad that we mention this subject here because it gives me the confirmation that this topic continue interesting the people. Without pretension, I had some feedback about my book but I don't have enough with photos and url. So if you are interested in having this book I wrote about change life, well pm me and I will send it to you for free in exchange of a testimonial with your photo and website name. Send me a message in pm or by email
Thanks for reading me, have a good day, Take care and I wish that everyone has life changing!

"The Seth Material", by Jane Roberts, first introduced me to concepts which made a fundamental change in my thinking. It took me several weeks to read what is only a slim volume, as it was so thought provoking.

"The Seth Material" was intended as a sampler of more comprehensive material which subsequently appeared in "The Eternal Validity of the Soul" and "the Nature of Personal Reality", and others. Beautifully written, her work was much admired by other writers, such as Esther and Jerry Hicks and Richard Bach ('Jonathon Livingston Seagull').

Her books are still available through Amazon.

Think & Grow Rich Is One of my favourites.

But I have hundreds of books and love most of them. I believe there is always something to get from every book. (Other books are not good though, but you get what I mean )

I think Richard Bach may have visited Jane Roberts at least once and I find Sethian echoes in the Seagull book and also in his novel "One".

Although you can get some of Jane's books on Amazon, they are really only still in print in the first place because small publishers periodically keep them alive and kicking. Here's one run by a former student of hers, I believe - Rick Stack.

        Welcome to SethLearningCenter.com

Please consider buying Seth books directly from publishers such as Rick.

The Seth books are very powerful and deep metaphysical material written with a deep faith in the greater goodness of humanity and our reasons for being here in the first place.

Two striking quotes from her books are:

"You create your own reality - the present is the point of power."

"You get what you focus on - there is no other main rule."

I'd vote for The Little Prince - by Antoine de Saint Exupery
This book has been a favorite since I got a copy of it in secondary school. I have read it maybe six or seven times (maybe even more) but each reading gives a different insight on the chapters.
Some people think that The Little Prince is a little juvenile for their tastes but really, kids would enjoy it because its so vague, they are free to think whatever they like. With adults, its different, because of the vagueness of the book, adults are encouraged to look for answers within themselves.

"Le Petit Prince"! I have that book somewhere in my room.

When I first read it I thought it was absolutely amazing. Not that it gives any kind of specific advice on success, but it does make you think and feel kinda good in a way.

I read the original French version too since I studied it in high school.

It was life-changing for you? Wow this is a different one.

hi li weng! thanks for the comment, i'm a bit of i guess, a little juvenile in my taste in books, i try not to get into the more contemporary self help or popular psychology kinds although i am sure the insights are more profound
i think that books are there for you to find the answers within yourself, to make it life changing
it doesnt matter whether it changes your perspective right after or not
i'd rather that the books give the opportunity for the reader to challenge his own perspective, to change it or adjust it according to the time that you read it. isn't that life changing enough?

    Hi - Great thread!

There are so many books that changed my life, (I'm currently reading "The Biology of Belief" by Bruce Lipton Ph.D), and I'd say that "The Divine Matrix" by Gregg Braden would be in my top 5.

But the one that started it all for me back in the early1990s was a much lesser known but beautiful book by a lovely and inspired British ex-psychologist. It's called "Living Magically" and the author is Gill Edwards. She deserves much better recognition than she's had so far, (although she doesn't crave it, as you'll see if you read her gentle but powerful work).

A bit metaphysical for some, but she describes herself as a "fairy with hob-nailed boots on!" Head in the clouds and feet on the ground - good balance, eh?

    Try this one!

    All good things
    Trevor.

It's got to be that all time great "Think and Grow Rich"

Its funy that no matter which personal development or self-help product you're reading or that appears to be "new", the main ideas and principles can be traced back to the founding blocks in Napoleon's book.

I like the Bible not just because I'm a Christian but if I had one choice it probably would be Think and Grow Rich (Off now to read my Bible and pray for forgiveness in case that's a wrong choice!)

  • As A Man Thinketh.

It was the first book I ever picked up at a bookstore after leaving home to make my way in the world. Strange that I'd never walked into a bookstore for that purpose.

I was living in San Diego at the time, growing tired of what I felt was an aimless life of false aims and felt there had to be something more to me than I'd learned from all the technical and religious knowledge I'd acquired. I had a longing that couldn't be quenched by anything, and so stole out from the company of my typical friends to just wander the city's bookstores, museums, theaters and what not.

In one book store, I must have looked at the covers of every book in the place, but when I picked up that tiny little number with the hard cover and took in the title, "As A Man Thinketh," I was intrigued. And when I thumbed through, knew it must be for me.

Upon reading it, surrounded by my typical friends, my perception was transformed, and within a year I found myself in a wholly different life, with wholly different friends, and in my first business.

Mine isn't so much one book that changed my life, but a combination of books. I'm a lifelong learner so I am always reading to learn new things...and tend to be reading more than one book at once. I would say though that the most inspirational and insightful books I've read are by Deepak Chopra. Two of his that I have read more than once are Power, Freedom, & Grace and The Path to Love. I'm just about to start reading The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz as I've been told it is a "must" read

I have two books that recently changed my life:

Prometheus Rising deals with experimental psychology and Timothy Leary's 8-Circuit Model of Consciousness while The Holographic Universe expounds on the theoretical works of physicist David Bohm and neurophysiologist Karl Pribram concerning their holographic theories of the brain and mind.

As far as business goes, the two biggest reads I've had by far are Timothy Ferriss's 4 Hour Work Week, and Rob Kiyosaki's Rich Dad Poor Dad.

Timothy Ferriss taught me that not everything in business is wearing suits and ties, showing up for something at 8 in the morning every day, and attending board meetings while hating your life and having no time for friends and family. He showed me that there are people in this world like himself who make money but have freedom and time to enjoy life as well. This instantly became my dream.

Rich Dad Poor Dad taught me that becoming wealthy requires retraining your own mind to see money as an asset that builds and grows based on investment, not something you trade time for.

I am so very grateful for the people who have made a career of sharing their philosophies and life experiences.

From about the age of 17 I started learning from other people, first hearing Earl Nightingale speak words of wisdom on the radio, from the first time I read Desiderada, from hearing recordings of JFK speech clips, to buying some Jim Rohn tapes, reading Carnegie, learnt about visualizing and affirmations, read spiritual & alternative books, to all those 'sales training tapes' that came out in the 80's that a consultant of mine lent to me, to later learning and incorporating Lou Tice 'Pathways to Excellence" into the training programs for long-term-unemployed participant's skills training programs at SkillShare, it never ended for me, reading Think Big, think and grow rich, Richest man in Babylon, ... all the while also reading and learning about what makes PEOPLE tick, realtionships (and why they didnt work - LOL!), developing life skills to become a better person, hopefully.

But the one that actually pulled much of all my 30+ years training was the surprise of Tony Robbins and the original Personal Power II tapes. YEP! I actually applied the principles, stuck to the 30 day program, and that little sucker pulled a lifetime of learning and training together for me.

All the pieces of learning now had a sequence of application, and the 30 days forced me to stay focused and see the purpose of what I was trying to do, and see it through to completion. That was 8 years ago, when I was going through another frustrating financial glitch...

but as a result of getting serious about making sure I was never so vulnerable again, for the past 5 years I have been 'retired' to work from my home office in something I love to do, and get paid for (wow!)...

The program doesnt have all of your life's answers, and there is no magic, but for some reason, that 'workbook' process was the most powerful tool I have yet encountered. But maybe only because I had already spent a lifetime learning personal and professional development.

I bought the PP II set for half a dozen friends so that they could also experience this success... but only one person actually did the 30 day program, and guess what... he is the only person who has also progressed like I have... the others are where they were 8 years ago...

          cant put brains into statues...

Wishing you and your loved ones a brilliant year and lifetime ahead, from me and mine!

          Hello Everyone:

I would have to say that the one book that has had the biggest impression upon my life would be Money, and the Law of Attraction wriiten by Esther and Jerry Hicks. This is a book that goes to great lengths to show you how we ourselves sabotage our own efforts to grow rich just by our thoughts. It lays bare our thought processes of blaming others for all of our failures. It then goes on and shows us how to change those thoughts to shift into a new way of thinking about taking responsibility for our own actions. It also comes with it's own companion DVD that you can take with you to play while traveling. It covers all key points of the book. Good reading and make it a great day.

I would say that all the personal development books that I've read have changed my life. I can't think of one in particular because they've all been great. I've been studying them for over half a decade and it occurred to me recently that I've really internalised a great percentage of the concepts.

I live by the great words of Napoleon Hill: "Every adversity, every failure, and every heartache carries with it the seed of an equivalent or greater benefit." I think that's probably the most powerful and transformational quotation I've ever read.

Recently Jack Canfield's The Success Principles helped get me back on my feet after a psychological breakdown. You can read more about it in the signature below if you're interested.

Thinking back I probably shouldn't have been so honest however I still believe there's a lot of value in that post. And what that experience taught me among many other things (including being more appreciative and everything I have and how lucky I am) is that I can handle anything and everything that life throws at me.

After you've been through such a nightmare to put it mildly and come out the other side a more improved person you feel almost invincible ... Suddenly all the things I used to be afraid of look like the most wonderful, easy, and brilliant opportunities to experience more in life. Just typing that and thinking about it makes me so excited. I really am happy just to be alive.

So to answer your question I would say The Success Principles by Jack Canfield changed my life.

One fantastic book that I read this past year is I am That by Nisargadatta Maharaj. The book consists of easy-to-read conversations with a self-realized sage on our true state of being, beyond body and mind. Any page you open to is a font of wisdom.

Of course Napoleon Hill's 'Think and Grow Rich' is what made me realize that anything was possible but what really sent me into overdrive was his other book 'Succeed And Grow Rich Through Persuasion'. If you haven't read that one I highly recommend it because it is more tailored to the salesman. As both an internet marketer and a direct seller that book has proven helpful.

"The Master Key" by Charles Haanel. It was before "Think and Grow Rich". Basically it states that the Universe is thought, and that we are connected to the universal mind through our subconscious. If we use our conscious mind to program our subconscious mind, we can program success, money, etcetera. We are then invoking the law of attraction, which is the basis for the wildly popular "The Secret" Film.

The first book that comes to mind for me is "The 16 Laws of Success", which is an extension of Think & Grow Rich.

It's what first introduced me to the idea of finding your life's purpose, plus how what you think about on a consistent basis become your reality.
I can directly relate all my mindshifts to this one book.

It introduced me to the world of personal development, which is a great tool to change one's live, if you actually do something with what you learn.

It's crazy to think about how one little decision can entirely change your life's path...

My adult life has been a pilgrimage. I read at least a hundred books a year including a lot of nonfiction/self improvement. The hardest thing is applying what you have learned consistently. So far, I would have to say Tony Robbins' Unlimited Power has stuck more than anything.

Og Mandino's stuff as well as Napoleon Hill's have always struck me as sneaky cryptic. I could never tell if I was missing it or it was just missing.

Psycho-cybernetics was very good. Hugh Prather's "Notes to Myself" is excellent. Bender and Grindler's books on NLP are mindnumbingly dry, but have good content. "To Love is to be Happy" by Barry Neil Kauffman is the real stuff. "Your Money or Your Life" is also an excellent choice with similar lessons to "The Richest Man in Babylon".

Wayne Dyer's earliest books, "Your Erroneous Zones" & "Pulling Your Own Strings" are both great.

This isn't a self-help book per se, but the twobooks that really changed my life and the way I look at the world were:

      Journey of Souls
      Destiny of Souls

      both by Michael Newton.

If I remember correctly, basically during one of his hypnotherapy sessions, he asked one of his clients to go back in time/memory, and the client ended up in a period that was "in between lives", after the previous life but before they'd come to Earth in this life.

Through his hypnotherapy sessions and interviews, he uncovers a lot of things about the afterlife and the reason we incarnate as humans.

It really helped me to rethink my life and the reason I'm here on Earth today.

Hmm. Tough choice. There's a lot of books I really like, but if I had to choose one with regards to my IM lifestyle, I'd have to say "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" was the most influential.

Of course, the book didn't touch on internet marketing (or anything remotely close, as a matter of fact), but it did nudge me to start looking at alternative sources of income, rather than just slaving away at a job. That started me down the long and fruitful road of internet marketing and personal freedom.

It's so nice to see this thread growing.

I know so many of us have profited at some time or another from the words and inspiration in a book and what's most important is, that those changes occurred when we applied what we read.

So hats off to all who have achieved more through application of the principles learned.

I also realized that there are so many books that helped me so I thought I would return here to list my top ten.

The Golden Key - Emmett Fox - (only 6 pages but powerful)

    Hi
For me the book that shifted a lot of "shoulds" and "must do's" is Byron Katie's "Loving What Is". It helps you to change through a series and simple questions. The idea is that we trap ourselves with limited thinkingm that tends to go round in circles, about other people and situations. It's amazing how much different you can feel through just a change in your perceptions about something.

Early in my career, years ago, I bought and read all kinds of books on every subject pertaining to the mind, success, marketing, money, etc. (I love to read.) Anyway, all of the good points in all of the books that I have read, can all be found in the Holy Bible. I now use that as my mentor and guide for every situation in my life. I wish I was 20 again and know then what I know now.

Jay Abraham (marketing consultant author). His taped interview with Tony Robbins changed the direction I was taking 3-4 years ago.

Use to be into Tony, self improvement, etc. But I think you need to follow someone with a clear advantage.

You step back from it, and theres probably 10,000 marketing professors across the country. Earning, $40-80 k a year, or more? Working a few days a week, teaching X number of credits. Two semesters a year. Then they have to worry about tenure, promotions, etc.

Jay comes along and does $5,000 per person seminars. Even deducting expenses and overhead, he makes more per seminar than most will earn in 3-5 years. Have to draw a line in the sand and decide who you'll study...its easy to waste time following authors/gurus/speakers that arent worth anything.

Also, in investing Jim Rogers. Gave up on newsletters, websites, etc.

          • The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho

          • Brian Tracy
          • Tom Hopkins

I have to agree with Evelyn B about Loving What Is by Byron Katie. It helps you question your assumptions and negative emotions very deeply and is very liberating. It really frees up energy that is stuck in different states like anger, self-pity etc. She also is very funny and present to people. Lots of dialogues in the book about dealing with money anxiety, health fears, annoyances with a partner and daily disturbances. You catch your mind before it enslaves you again and again in it's stories.

Funny these two titles are always linked. I loved SOGR, never saw how the Secret could have been inspired by the SOGR and even found an author who claims the true inspiration for the Secret was an Esther Hicks book but since they would not be in the movie, the SOGR was subbed in.

    Wow, cool thread!

Here are some books I strongly recommend:

    Unlimited power by Tony Robbins
Can't really remember what it was, but that book changed something inside me.

    Persuasion engineering by Richard Bandler.
    Just read this book.

Four Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss.
Realizing that hours of work has nothing to do with how much money you make.

Rich dad, Poor dad By Robert Kiyosaki
    Just read it!

First Impressions: What You Don't Know About How Others See You by Ann Demarais
One of the first books I read about self-improvement/selling.

The 50th Law - Robert Greene (how to ignore fear and embrace bliss)
Jonathan Livingston Seagull (how to grow and persevere)
The Vortex - Jerry and Ester Hicks (how to be magnetic)
I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell - Tucker Max (how to celebrate failure as awesomeness)

Definitely "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle. Simple choice that others would likely agree with. Simply put: it's helped me balance what's important in my life and directly in front of me. In the grand scheme of things, nothing else really matters.

Even though it has been mentioned in the OP, 'the science of getting rich' completely changed the course of my life (and the course of my studies).

It explains beautifully how the economy isn't a zero sum game (where one person getting rich means another person becoming poor).

The best way to serve humanity is to get rich (through morally correct means, not by robbing a bank etc).

Well there's the obvious Think and Grow Rich. But I think what really got me to stop dreaming and start working was David Allen's Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity. I highly recommend this for anyone that is striving for some sort of motivation. Especially if you've just found that your project or something you spent a lot of time on was unsuccessful, reading this will ease your pain and help you pick yourself back up again and, as the title promises, getting things done.

as bad as it sounds, the game really changed my life, it lead me into this whole world of self development and self improvement. I have made some significant changes in my life because of what that book did for me. It opened my eyes to a whole new world, not really about picking up girls, but improving one self for the better.
