Neil Strauss and Tim Ferriss on dating

THis video -- Neil Strauss author of "The Game" and superstar of the "seduction community", and Tim Ferriss, bestselling author "The 4 hour work week", talking about dating:

Whether this is relevant to this forum I will let others decide, but here is my take on it.

I think both "4 hour work-week" and "The game" should be required reading for all internet marketers. Why? Because these books (and particularly "the game") are about the "inner game" of success -- which is where it plays out I think for most of us. Skills, techniques, network are important, but ultimately success comes down to two things: consistency and follow-through.

I also found out recently -- and nearly fell off my chair -- that Eban Pagan is actually David DeAngelo, author of "double your dating" and another superstar of the seduction community. I don't know how active he is in the seduction community any more, he seems to have moved to "greener pastures" as in Guru Blueprint and GetAltitude (I have a free coaching session from GetAltitude) and $10,000 seminars.

I spent some time in the 'seduction community' (and promptly got out before it got too weird :-D) and David D was one of the first guru's out there... although while he wasn't known so much for his actual seduction techniques, he was highly respected as a practical, no nonsense, 'foundation' sort of guy.

Also every other 'guru' after that copied his marketing and advertising techniques pretty much piece for piece, and that seems to be what he's known for more than anything else. His information was solid, but it was his marketing skills that earned him the respect... which makes sense all things being considered.

Also... the game was an awesome read :-) Lots of fun, but misses a lot of important stuff out. Definitely a good way to start things moving I think, I mean it inspired me, as long as you don't follow blindly.

As is the case with most things I assume :-)

There is a great book called "The Art of Seduction" by Robert Greene. But the art of seduction is not only about dating, it’s on how to seduce your customers into liking you, how to seduce strangers into believing in you. There is a lot more to seduction than in dating

Absolutely right... seduction as it's seen even specifically to dating, to be successful, is much more about inter-personal skills, self-confidence, social intelligence... after that, any 'technique' should work if it gels with who you are.

In fact wasn't it Robert Greene who said that 'To seduce is simply to lead astray'...

In other words... the ability to encourage someone to do something they wouldn't have done without your influence.

True... Greene does go on to say how powerful seduction is and that it shouldn't be used in bad ways. Greene has a few very good books out there on the ways people are influenced and influence others.

It helps you in becoming a better sales person and leader and lets you know what to watch out for too.

Thanks Toniy, Scortillon. I think you all have the right idea (that it's about "seduction" in all aspects of life). I would add to that that it's about self-esteem, presentation and the nature of human value creation. I have been thinking a lot about why this book has been so powerful to me, and have basically come to the conclusion that it's a STORY OF PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION AND REDEMPTION. It's about two geeks who take on the problem of meeting and having sex with women (a problem that affects the majority of the young male population, particularly of the geeky kind such as I was , and they are not just astonishingly successful (an amazing story in itself) but they also help in creating an entire movement out of it, commanding workshop fees in the thousands of dollars a day, and getting Eban Pagan started in his career. I say nothing about the ethics of all this, and in fact Strauss leaves the scene at the end for this reason (there are some pretty big flaws in the PUA idea), but there is also something beautiful and inspiring in the whole idea, particularly in the "inner game" aspect of the PUA (pick-up artist) community.

By the way I have tried to explain this both to my wife and to women of my acquaintance and failed, so if you are a woman, I hope you will not take offence at this. Maybe it's a guy thing, maybe I am not explaining properly, but reading the book will probably give you better insight. It's very powerfully written, I wish I could write like that. Nail Strauss and Elizabeth Gilbert ("Eat Pray Love") are the modern-day authors I would most like to emulate.

That's a great one...and his book "48 Laws of Power"

You know, whether it's dating, making money, getting in shape...it all boils down to your personal growth. This is why I always say:

"You have to grow for the life you want, not the life you have."

If more people "got this" point and made their personal growth the number one priority they could stop pursuing goals and just have the lifestyle they wanted.

His latest one "The 50th Law" is pretty good too. Give you a little different perspective on how some people succeed.

Do any ladies see the irony of the guy who reduced the workweek from 40 hours to 4 giving dating advice?

j/k I am sure Tim is quite the catch.

Well, most ladies would be quite happy to have a rich guy giving them all his attention... if indeed that is what Tim does in those extra 36 hours

Incidentally "The 4 hour work week" although very inspiring conceptually is actually a fantasy (delusional system) and essentially a marketing tactic to sell books, that in some ways underlies a serious integrity / values problem with the whole industry. Ferris worked 80 hours and more for over 2 years in order to develop equity in his business (traffic, customers, distributor network), then "retired" on 4 hours; so there have been no "4 hour work week" without that initial time investment. I have written a whole article about this
