Working From Home Is Great... I Gained 25lbs... Help!

Working from home is a dream to many... However now that I live that dream I find it has its faults...

First off my biggest complaint.... When you are at home, you are at work... There is no separation... I think that is why the GURU's get an office.. You know that right... Many of the big time GURU's not only sell you work from home and have all the time you want for family and fun... have an office and a staff with a huge overhead... so when you see they make 6 figures a month or a week... they never tell you how much that costs...

EXAMPLE look it up on google to verify... Years ago E-bay spoke to my desire to have the life I live... There was a guy that made 7 figures a year from ebay.. his story was a legend... then he went bankrupt... he had so much overhead with employees and a wharehouse and product costs that even while making 7 figures he went broke...

OK OK I got off topic... SORRY...

So working from home has many limitations.. the one I need help with is I sit around all day... on the couch with the tv on in the background and I am getting FAT!

I am 56 soon to be 57... ouch I know... I spent my adult life until this work from home lifestyle at 175lbs... I am 6' and this was a great weight for me... I was labeled skinny for most of my life...

Now I weigh in at 200-210lbs... OUCH!

I need help... and get off your ass and work it off is good advice, however see paragraph 1... Living the work from home lifestyle takes focus and more time than a 9-5 job does....

So what I am looking for are ways to eat better and take very short breaks and do something physical....

I can only guess that there are many out there in my situation that can benefit from this advice...

Do not get me wrong I would not change my life with a JOB that pays the same or even better. I love what I do... so it is easy to endure... yet I would love to lose some of my fat ass... lol

And by the way ladies I am taken....lol!!!! Hehehehheeeeheheheee! I know can you imagine?

Yeah, you have the point but the reason why many people prefer to work at home because the time is yours, the place is yours. There's no place to work comfortable than at home.

Hey Lee! One of the reasons people gain weight working from home deals with the amount of time spent in a computer chair.

At work, you'd get up to go to the bathroom, walk to the fax machine or printer, go talk to a coworker, ask your boss a question, or go on break.

At home, its easy to sit in the same chair for hours on end without getting up!

Set a timer to go off every hour. Then get up and walk around the house for 15 minutes. Then, when you sit down, set it to go off in another 60 minutes, etc.

Take baby steps to get the weight off. Working from home is hard enough as it is - trying to change everything about yourself at once just gets overwhelming and makes it much more difficult than it needs to be.

    Best of luck to you!

It takes more discipline There's no set time to start work or end work - no defined break periods or lunch hour.

Do not, under any circumstances, eat at your desk. It leads to eating without thinking about it - which piles on pounds.

Take a 20-30 minute break every couple of hours. If you don't have a dog, go to the animal shelter and adopt an adult dog - and then walk him twice a day during one of your breaks.:p

Do a few good stretches before you sit down at the computer and every time you get up from the chair.

Cut back on carbs for a while. If you do that - and take a couple brisk walks a day you will get the weight back down and have more energy, too.

How desperate do you have to be to see a man's height and weight - and wonder if he's "available"? Just saying....:p Never mind, probably happens.

If you can, you might want to consider
investing in the Wii Fit System.

I purchased a Wii for my kids last
    year and they love it.

When looking for more games for
them I came across Wii Fit and
I tried it out. Best $100 I ever
    spent!

It's fun and I don't "feel" as if I'm working
    out.

To lose that fat just EAT LESS.

Do those things actually work? I guess I chalked them off as good marketing as I couldn't see myself using a controller off of a gaming console to help me exercise.

Maybe I will change my routine and do 3 days at the gym and 3 days at the Wii haha. Any thoughts?

I can empathize. I took some time off from work to build a website and have gained 20 lbs. I've never had so much difficulty getting motivated to exercise in my life. But I turned it around, forced myself to get back into jogging and have started on a diet regimen called intermittent fasting, which is kind of intense, but working very well.

Maybe another way of saying Simon Says

Anyway OP, if you prefer staying at home still, then maybe you can get a threadmill or something. Should work fine, and eat less.

I totally agree with gekko. Joining gym was the only thing that made me start exercising. I used to hate it, and now I'm really happy I made my decision. Better yet, get a personal trainer, even if it's only half an hour once or twice a week, they'll keep you on track.

Make sure that you drink enough water; we often mistake thirst for hunger. Stay away from fizzy drinks, they're loaded with sugar. Green tea works for me.
Don't skip meals, especially breakfast. Smaller meals more often are better than two or three big meals. Chew well.

Go for a walk. Dance. Sign up for Qi Gong classes.

Try pomodoro technique, it's brilliant - and it's free

and no, I'm not a personal trainer but with this tips and some Zumba classes I lost 8-9 kg in a couple of months

You need to set a specific time for exercise, and stick to your ROUTINE. Problem with ROUTINES is that it's pretty boring, so you may want to get a PARTNER.

Good suggestions so far, here are mine...

I had many struggles working from home (proximity of refrigerator to desk, dogs barking, wife and kids, TV, etc...). I rented office space about 5 years ago and although my office space is quite expensive (I own a Real Estate company too), you can find single room office space in large multi-tenant buildings for about $200-300 per month, or utilize shared office space. Having this type of working environment had made a tremendous difference in my work ethic.

I think having dedicated (outside of home) work space makes it easier to differentiate between work and home task and screw off time. I plan certain tasks to do for the day and then I go home, no figuring out other stuff to do at the office so I am there for 8 hours, do what I planned to do and then free time! (Call of Duty Black Ops, anyone?)

On the weight-gain front, I would highly suggest a paleo eating lifestyle such as The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson. This is an excellent program which has enabled me to drop a bunch of weight, feel better and still eat a bunch of crap! (so to speak).

Additionally, (this one is obvious) exercise is important to everyone, especially keyboard campers, so I would also suggest some type of exercise. Could be as simple as taking daily walks (as some have suggested), to some simple kettlebell routines that take minutes per day, to following along with some of the awesome products put out by Beachbody (I have used their stuff for years).

One important note about working out, DON"T think about work-stuff while exercising, focus on what you are doing and how you are appreciating your body. Exercise is one of the best stress reducers and adding stress while trying to reduce stress doesn't mix. Personally, I keep a pad and pencil nearby so if a stray thought enters my head while exercising about some marketing idea, a solution to a problem or something, I can jot it down, clear my head, and get back to what I am doing without losing the thought. For me, these epiphanies always seem to happen during exercise, driving and showers, as the Boy Scouts say, "Be Prepared".

    Peace out Dudes,

    Steve

You do need to get into a good routine. I find that too, when I am at home working, I really need to force myself sometimes to go out and do something! I find a good gym is useful, go there, and do some exercise you enjoy! You see other people exercising and it helps with motivation. Or go for that power walk! If you can do it first thing in the morning it is ideal as you loose more weight in the morning and it gets you going for the day.

See how good it feels to get your body moving!

& eat more fresh foods, veges, fruit and low fat meats, etc. Lots of advice on the internet on eating well.

    Good luck, keep enjoying
