It's Not As Bad As You Think!

Does a genius need to sharpen his talent to reach his potential? You bet!

There's a myth, however out there concerning those who are blessed with a lot of talent - It's simply they are born that way. The truth of the matter is that no-one reaches their fullest potential unless they are willing to practice their way there.

So why do I make such a big deal about practicing?

1) It enables development.

How do we grow and develop? Through practice. How do we learn skills such as riding a bike or driving a car? Through practice. Adults refine old skills and acquire new ones through practice. If you want to improve and develope, then you must practice. Done correctly, practice keeps making you better than you were yesterday.

2) Practice also leads to discovery.

One of my favorite comic strips is the Peanuts with Charlie Brown. In one of the strips, Charlie Brown says to Linus "Life is just too much for me. I've been confused since the day I was born. I think the whole trouble is that we're thrown into life too fast. We're really not prepared." "What do you want?' Linus responds, " a chance to warm up first?"
We may not get a chance to warm up before entering childhood, but we can warm up by practicing the many activities we pursue once life has begun. And it's often during these "warm ups" that we learn valuable things about ourselves.

Practice, however; demands discipline. One reason some people see practice as a grind is that it requires discipline. Developing discipline always begins with a struggle. There is no easy way to become a disciplined person. It has nothing to do with strength or ability. It's not a matter of conditions, but of choice.

We are what we repeatedly do. To become excellent at a task, it's not to act, but forming a habit and that habit is developed when you practice.

Exactly, LJ! When first started listening to subliminal mp3s, it really required me to invest a time each day to listen to it. I was not willing to at first but I said to myself that I have to if I want to achieve my dreams. So I "forced" myself to listen to it everyday and thankfully, I never stopped since then.

Now, I'm beginning to see the results... Hehe..

Good deal Alfonso! "Forcing" ourselves is often the best way to take that first step to forming good habits! Glad you're seeing the payoff from your efforts!

      Yup!

It's what Mr. Maxwell talks about in Outliers (i.e. the 10,000 hour rule). It takes passion, perseverance, and courage.

You will run into a lot of mental monsters, but when you put in the hours and love what you do, it's much easier, and a few years down the road, you're a Jedi.

Great Post LJ I believe that when we want to develop a new skill or acquire new self-achievement, we need self-discipline.

To me, it's not an easy task since my mind rebels against me all the time, but I'm gonna conquer it Because I know that one important ingredient to achieve success is to become a disciplined person like you said!
