Yes, in every aspect of life mentor plays a big rule top guide and and direct you. Especially in the business mentor is very important since they know most what need tpo do and don't.

i don't have one and i wish i had. i've had mentors in other fields in the past, and indeed they played a huge and positive role. mentors have been through it, and can really accelerate your learning and add more depth to it. that's not to say you can't go far being self-taught, and that there's not lots of value from the other approach, though.

I think it is important to have a mentor, a business coach or possibly both. It is great working with someone who has no other motive than to help you succeed - and will call you on your "stuff". Owning your own business is fantastic, but you simply can't know it all - it really does help. Good Luck!

I'm like most of you, self taught... trying to learn it by myself. I have a fitness mentor, but she kind of inspires me and all the things she's said would fit into the topic of internet marketing. Things like: believe in yourself, stop whining about the status quo and make a change, don't quit, etc. Sounds cliche, but that's what motivated me to lose weight, after all! I'm going to implement the same philosophy into my business.

I have been searching and teaching myself for about a year after working for a guy at a business who made his money online. He promotes super expensive teaching programs such as Abunza. I have tried to get him to mentor me many times but he always refers me to his products. I know that he had a mentor to get him started. Can you guys share maybe how you found your mentor or real people who coach/mentor. I am not looking for free information or even a quick track. Just somebody who can provide real insight to making a decent income if you do things correctly.

As a business success consultant, part of what my clients
want is for me to mentor them. Providing guidance, support
and strategies to help them succeed online or offline is
absolutely vital...

So, I mentor people... but I also have a mentor - in fact two.
I don't think you can advocate using mentors and not have
one yourself.

And it so happend that today was one of my mentor sessions!
In just a short time, he was able to cut through the rubbish
and get to my key issues...

Can you manage without a mentor? Of course, but the
benefits are huge and well worth while. I urge you to get
one - they are truly on your side.

My session today was just 75 minutes - typically mine last
this length of time too, but sometimes, it can be shorter or
longer... it all depends what the client wants. Some of my
clients are business coaches, parent coaches and life coaches;
but also small business owners, too...

If you want to start... just do it. And be assured, it's very
satisfying.

I certainly believe in DIY but having a mentor is to me important as well. A few weeks ago I seemed to be getting nowhere, very frustrated sent an email off to my mentor, he responded with do this do that kind of things, bit of a pep talk - very worthwhile really motivated me

Hmmmm....

One could view places like WF as a sort of 'vicarious' mentor for us; almost as good as a personal living, breathing mentor. After all, WF is an aggregation of many intuitive, knowledgeable minds.

The Wise One once proclaimed: "Ask, and it shall be given you...". Perhaps if a beginner put out a call for a mentor here, one qualified to do so would be willing to step up to the plate and make a positive difference in the direction of another person's life.

  Excellent ideas here which I see as crucial elements to success in any area, not just IM. I too hope to hook up with a mentor someday. rhapsody said it best about WF being the virtual mentor but that will never fill the need for connecting with a living & caring person.

I am my own mentor, BUT, I learn a lot from studying highly effective people.

So, Tony Robbins, Eben Pagan, Tim Ferriss, Napoleon Hill and a handful of other effective people are my mentors!!

I'm trying to deal with massive information overload and prioritizing my goals right now. My tendency is to course-correct on my own but this is one of those rare times where mentoring could probably really help focus me. I have no doubt that if I were to sit down and have a real exchange with Jason Fladlien or someone else whose style and values I could relate to----I would leapfrog ahead of a lot of the clutter.

In the meantime, I agree that just periodically brushing up on your role models can be at least something of a "mentorship." At the moment Fladlien and Tim Ferriss are high on that list. I've known about Tony Robbins' stuff for years and totally believe in it---but have seldom applied anything close to its full potential.

Mentor is required in every field. It keeps you going , he motivates you. We all want the shortest path to greatness, but few of us know exactly how to do that. That's when a mentor comes into play

  In this field no but in others yes. If you are seeking a mentor in IM you have to be very careful of the choice because there are a lot of charletans about.
  
  Either ones who are there to rip of money from you or the ones who just do not have the experience but are prentending they have. The classic ones are the 15 year old kids who have never made any money online but try to sell their services as mentors.

It depends. Everyone is different in terms of motivation, self-study capabilities, discipline, etc...

As for me - I don't need a mentor. I'm very motivated and can be extremely focused at times (I can easily sit all through the night programming and not think about sleep once). But here's the thing - while I don't need a mentor or a coach - I need a colleague. Someone I can talk to about all the technical stuff, share ideas with, etc. Someone who can keep up with me and challenge me from time to time. Here's an example:

What I don't need -- "you can do this, focus all your energy on this marketing idea/custom client control panel and you will figure it out".

What I do need -- "here's how I'd do it; have you thought about changing the...?; why don't you... oh right, that won't work. Oh but then why don't you simply...".

See what I mean?

I personally don't believe (perhaps *need* would be a more accurate word) in the self-motivation/help stuff. But some other people do - and some really need it, too. Everyone is different.

Yeah a big part of it comes down to your personality. If you have an entrepreneurial personality and are a real go-getter and hussler, then a mentor can help but isn't needed as you will figure things out on your own.

But if you are the type of personality that loses focus, quits, or has trouble plugging over hurdles, then a mentor can make all the difference.

By mentor, I am mostly focusing on a coach type person or somebody you speak to often.

Almost every successful people have role models and idols, which is different yet similar type of mentor!

I got a mentor _ now I am a mentor.

Having a mentor is extremely important. One of the keys, however, is having a mentor who is able to help you in the area that you want to grow into.

I hired a "success coach" a few years ago and, although it was extremely helpful in terms of motivation, setting goals, etc., he was not able to help me as much with what I wanted to learn about internet marketing.

So I advice getting a mentor who is actually doing whatever it is that you want to do.

I find that questions get answered better and faster if you have a mentor. We all have things we don't know when we start.

I totally believe in mentoring. I am very new at internet marketing, in fact, just weeks old. In these first few steps of mine, I can't help but have questions and concerns. It would be a big help to me if I could find a mentor that would help me navigate through this new endevour of mine. I believe that mentors should have some of the following qualities. It doesn't matter if the mentor are for business, personal life, or fitness etc. these qualities are universal.

Mentors should be patient, encouraging, honest, and fully understand tough love. Through these qualities I believe that the person being mentored will really flourish under the mentors guidance.

It's important to have a mentor in business, and how to follow action plans are very helpful in creating direction. A great mentor does three things that I believe lead others to follow "Success Steps"

It all depends on who you are, and what is important to you.

It may come from a deep rooted insecurity I developed as a child, but I'm not good at being a mentee- although I'm sure it could have made things a lot easier for me.

You have to be really careful in this business though, I'm sure I'm not the only one that has received phone calls from some company that wanted to mentor me for nothing but my testimonial...and $10,000- if I was secure enough to accept a mentor, they'd have to be successful enough to not need my money.

Having a mentor will short cut the time of learning and pointing you to the right direction, it will save a lot of effort and money and time.

However getting the right mentor is not an easy task. You need to find someone who achieved what you want. And they are willing to guide you and be honest with you. They are willing to give out their time to coach you. and usually it will not be cheap.
