What do you do when you're feeling down?

Hey Warriors,

So, how do you "sike" (or is it psyche) yourself up when your feeling down and blue?

I personally like to pray. I believe prayer is one of the most powerful tools we have. It's fast and real simple to do. Just close your eyes and start talking to the Almighty (or whoever your god may be).

I also like to remind myself that "all things will pass". I learned that one from Og Mandino's, "the Greatest Salesman in the World".

With the Holiday season upon us, you'd think many folks would be cheerful. But, I remember reading somewhere that many folks get very depressed during this time of year. And that's a real bummer.

So, what do you do?

Peace!

It's called SAD's (Seasonal Affective Disorder). It's due to a lack of sunlight.

If you get 'the blues' in winter, you need to get out into the sun more often. A brisk walk or run during the day will be twice as effective.

Just try to think of all the things it's possible to be thankful for instead of the ways it could be different in the other direction.

It's the surest way to cancel the pity party and commence the celebration!

And, no one else has seen your future yet, so they are not qualified to
    call it.

But, there's a very good chance things can and will get better.

I would usually try to get out and maybe jog for a bit. Either that or I would play with my kid brother over some videogames. Also sometimes I'll invite some friends for some chit-chat over some mild alcohol. And sometimes I just lie on bed and listen to my favorite music..

I've fought with depression my entire life. There are times when it hits so hard that I don't even want to get out of bed. Over time, I've found a lot of things that can help take the edge off. It's important to find some way to get out of your own head - thoughts have a habit of spinning out of control, especially in the downward direction.

Music - make sure it's positive, uplifting music. I usually listen to Blues Traveler, Phish, Bob Marley, or things along those lines when I need a quick emotional pickup. Good positive lyrics, nice motivating beat.

Companionship - get in touch with some friends, hang out, and remind yourself that you are not alone.

Activity - get out of the house and change your scenery! Go jogging, go to the mall, take a walk around the block, go to the bookstore just to browse, any number of things - just get out of the house!

Spirituality - prayer, meditation, whatever it takes to connect with something greater than yourself. I will go to a park, find a grassy field, and (after checking for dog mess - this is important!) lay down and enjoy nature. I'll let my mind wander and explore the interconnectedness of being, the vastness of space, the number of blades of grass, and so on until my brain comes back around and I realize I am simply a part of a greater universe. It brings my perceived problems back into a more normal proportion.

I have the same problem, and after a couple of years of taking mild antidepressants threw them out a month or so ago. I decided they were doing just as much harm as good, if not more.

That's what works most consistently for me. Drag your butt out and do something that changes your mental state. As much as I hate exercise, that helps too.

You also might try taking a daily vitamin D supplement, especially if you live somewhere that doesn't get a lot of sunlight.

I keep a happiness journal. On one page I have "Yay Me" section and the "Gratitude" section. I try to list 5 things every day that I'm proud of myself about. Such as I didn't snap at my mother (who always knows how to push my buttons) or I completed all the tasks on my list.

On my gratitude list I just list 5 things I'm grateful for. It can be as simple as "I'm grateful for the warm, sunny day" or I'm grateful my son cleaned up after himself.

I also have a page that I don't write in every day but I do write in it when I'm feeling stressed with my life. I write a full page of how I want my life to be but I write it as if it's already like that. It's like writing a fantasy as fact. Does wonders for my mood and for the possibilities of what can be....

I take action to change the subject in my head and turn that thought process into something else by reading a book, exercising, talking with a friend, playing guitar, or listening to some favorite music. All those things motivate me out of the feeling blue stage. This takes work and I have been doing this for years now, but it does work. Thoughts and feelings can and will dominate if you let them. Inactivity can create negativity and negative thoughts. Positive and healthy actions can eliminate those negative thoughts and feelings. This is a priceless discipline.

  • The only thing that has the power to get me down is my own thought and attitude, and therefore I take what for me is the simplest approach to casting off any form of negativity, which is to either adjust the thought at the root of the disturbance, or bring all thought to a standstill by one or another technique with which I am well-practiced.

Without a disturbing thought at the root of a melancholy 'feeling', there's most likely nothing to be down about.

There's a very special insight that if a person can grasp it they can realize a great many more uplifting moments; and that is that thought colors our perception, and we have the ability to take control of the pallet.

I do not know whether my way is weird. Sometimes when I am down I either....

    1. Play games
    2. Be near nature
    3. Quirky way - Keep jumping and saying "YES!" to myself. I find that when our physiology is kept in an excited way, it is very hard to get ourselves into a depress mode. Try it, but ensure that no one can see you doing it. It really works!

I always allow myself a short time to feel it and wallow in it. For me, feeling my own pain or sadness is something that is important in the healing process.

After that, I either talk to my husband about it, talk to a friend, distract myself by watching something mindless on TV.

If none of those things help, there's always ice cream.

I look at whatever situation has me feeling depressed and I ask myself OK, well I've obviously been focusing on what's going wrong - what's been going right? There's almost always some aspect of the situation that's good. I try as often as I can to look for the positive stuff and then build on that.

If I can't find anything good, I take a shower or a drive or have a glass of wine

I've had seasonal affective disorder for a while now. I take Vitamin D and magnesium supplements. I'm also using SAD light therapy. The machines themselves are a little pricey and if you can't afford one you can always buy the bulb and put it in a regular lamp. I use mine by the computer since I'm there most of the time. The sunlight that we get in the winter (depending on where you live of course) generally isn't strong enough to give our bodies the required amount of vitamin D that we need ...hence the supplements. Whether it's a placebo or not, I think it helps immensely.

Hey Jaggy...when I'm down (which only lasts a short while) I will usually dance or sing. I dance pretty well but my singing is horrible and the only person that will listen is my k9 Blu...oh he loves it

If I need to get pumped for a project/client and get things handled, I will listen to some rap music (mostly conscious rap) every now and then a lil 2pac....here lately Jay Z has been a huge inspiration with is latest album.

If I need to just shift my mindset...I will go into meditation and think on things that I'm grateful for in my life and ways that I can improve my service to others. That usually gets my mind to moving in a positive direction.

Quite often though I take vacations...traveling is my thing!

The first thing I will do is listen to my favourite music, choose upbeat music like rock and roll. While you are listening to the music, breathe with rhythms. Concentrate on the breathing. Inhale slowly, draw your breath until you are conscious it reaches the groan area. Stop briefly, then breathe out slowly. Try to take about twice as long breathing in than breathing out. Try to achieve about 8 whole cycles in a minute.
If I am worried by a problem, I always think of one of our saying: How do we know it is not going to turn out fabulously? It was part of a story when a man lost his horse. He shrugged his head and said "How do we know it is not going to turn out OK?" Surely enough, a few days later, the horse returned bring with him a mare! ... The story continued but you get the picture?

When you're down you are not in vibrational alignment with what you think you should be doing and what your are doing. Figure out the discord is and move toward what you should or believe you should be doing or change what you want to match what you are doing. Example if your wasting time but feeling bad because you aren't producing you have to change one of the two. Schedule times for the time wasting and a separate time for the productivity, family, play, exercise or whatever and don't mix them. These are crude examples to get the thought across briefly.

I shift my focus on all the things I have to be grateful for. I actively engage in a mental inventory of recent blessings and accomplishments, recent progress, unexpected pleasant surprises.

A great technique is to stand up and gently shake your body, bouncing slightly and gently at the knees while focusing on the motion you are generating. You can say something like "I'm shaking out the bad energy" or something like that to signify you are purging the negativity. Shake out your whole body. Take some deep breaths.

When I feel down I often go for a walk or have a warm bath.. I often find that the answers to whatever problem I have at the time always comes to me when I do that... Probably cos it's very relaxing so it helps you clear your mind.

I listen to music, at first probably a sad type song to relate to, and then something a little more upbeat to get my mood up!

"This too shall pass" is an old sufi proverb. Understand that any emotion is a fictional state induced by the Ego (or pain body). Accept that the emotion is present. Feel it, accept it, but do not judge it. Let it flow through you and accept that it is not a permanent state and it will pass.

Eckhart Tolle ("in the now" and "A new Earth") says that if you do not deny your emotions and let them pass through you that you will feel a great peace. This peace or "Emptiness" (Buddha term) will help you overcome any obstacle in your life. Let the moment your are in be "here now". There is no other moment than NOW and to accept it is the only sane way to deal with it.

This may not make sense to you but if you do this one thing I promise it will help you..."Feel the emotion, realize that it will pass, and live in the now".

    Good Luck.
