Yesterday Was Big For Me

Eight years ago I skipped my senior year of high school to start college early.

I was a hopeless nerd, with all my major life accomplishments be academic or D&D related. So it was world shattering when I lost my second semester of college to a medical condition that runs in my family, but had never, previously, manifested in me.

I spent the next four years learning how to live with my condition, and trying to complete a semester of college. I gathered enough credits between medical withdrawals to be considered a rising junior before eventually dropping out.

Since then I've gotten my condition under control, landed a job I love, married a woman I love more, and had my first child. But my lack of any kind of degree has always bothered me. I want my daughter to understand the value of education and I don't even have a high school diploma. Not to mention, it is a little embarrassing that my wife has her Master's degree.

Yesterday I got accepted into Indiana University's School of Continuing Studies. A self paced program that will let me complete my degree and finish a journey I started nearly a decade ago.

I rank it the third most important event in my life so far, behind the birth of my daughter, and my marriage.

I'm posting this partial, to share a major event in my life with people I consider to be my friends. But mostly I want everyone to know that no matter what the odds are against you, or what you have holding you back you can build the life you want.

Just keep trying, and don't give up.

Are you doing internet marketing as well?

Yes and no. I'm in house for a law firm. I actually do a lot more PR stuff and commercial copy writing than straight internet marketing. But I got the job from making a pitch for IM consulting and do keep our SERPs high and constantly split test the website.

I did some research a while back on how to land a job as a professional web developer. I know this isn't your major or profession.

I talked with a few people that were already working as professional web developers. They told me that you're just as likely to land a good job as a web developer by simply showing your skills and sites you have created as with having a bachelors degree.

My point is... Not all significant accomplishments in life require a college degree. In fact I think a college degree is over rated.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Congrats on your accomplishments!

I got my job without a degree, and don't expect it to make me more money.

But, I started it, things happened, and I didn't finish it.

      (Expletive) that.

I may have a handicap, but I'm not Handicapped. It won't stop me from doing what I set out to do.

I finish what I start, even if it takes me a decade.

Yeah I agree, you don't need a college degree for everything. Look at Mark Zuckerberg who created facebook, he made it while in college and then leaving. Now he's crazy rich!

You can make it without a college degree, but some people want that college degree to fit in, and it does seem like you want it to match up to your wife. I personally don't think it matters if you have a college degree or not. If you're doing good things and doing well, then it shouldn't matter. But, if you need it, than go for it friend.

I think your post is amazing purely and simply because you achieved what you set out to achieve despite any health issues. Your daughter is really lucky to have a father that doesn't give up and one that loves her enough to change his own life for.

    You are awesome

Dude, you should be $%#! proud of yourself! You stuck with things even when your world fell apart and you accomplished your goal in spite of obstacles that would keep most people down. Congratulations and well done! With that kind of determination, you can do anything you set your mind to do.

I have to agree with the college education being overrated. I literally have a Ph.D. Taught graduate school for over ten years and then read Robert Kiyosaki's book, Rich Dad, Poor Dad. It changed my life.

I left teaching and now I have a dream to work full-time on the internet. I'm still working to get out of the old mind-set that says you need to get a good education and work for somebody else. That old model doesn't really work any more.

Don't just use your skills to make your boss rich. Use the skills you have learned (and are continuing to learn) and make YOURSELF rich. With the kind of determination and spirit you have, you're going to be able to help a LOT of people achieve their dreams.

Your story is inspiring! I hope you get the chance to share it with a lot of people.

    With Kind Regards,

    Tim

    Will -

Congrats on getting back in school. And the only reason I say gratz is because you're doing yet another thing you want to do, and fulfilling that goal.

With that said, you should never feel inadequate or 'embarrassed' that someone else has more education than you. IMO College isn't the same thing it was back in the days of dusty books, paneled libraries, and strict professors. Nowadays it's more about making money and passing you through the system until they've maxed you out on student loans.

Your life's achievements outweigh any degree you could've gotten by now. You triumphed over a serious medical condition, found a girl you loved, got married, started a family, and work at a good job. These things are accomplishments made by a guy with imagination (D&D, remember?), motivation (starting college early), and above everything else, perseverance.

I flunked out of college because the courses bored me and I was admittedly partying too much. Eventually though, I got my sh$t together. Now I'm more motivated than I ever have been, own 2 of my own businesses, and make an awesome living at affiliate marketing. I have the family of 5, dogs, houses, white picket fences... all of those things without a college degree.

I never once felt badly that I hadn't finished college. I know college grads around here who wait tables at the local steakhouse. It's not that the economy sucks and it's hard to find a job, it's that some people cruise through school thinking life will be all about books and tests... only to graduate with a tasseled hat to find out there's a lot more to it than that.

You're going to be as successful as you are motivated
    . College degree or not.

Good luck in school, but remember - your life experiences are the best education you'll ever get.

Wow! Congratulations man. I've went through a crazy life myself since I was 15.

I'm still working on changing it. Like you, I'm lucky to have a woman who loves me for who I am and even encourages me and supports me on trying new things.

Your post is really uplifting and serves as an example that when you set your sights on something, only you can keep yourself from not getting it.

Also, just to touch on something someone else said on the thread: a college degree is overrated.

I agree with the above. I know an awful lot of people where I live graduate from college and end up 1) not going into their profession of choice and 2) don't make that much money.

Heck, I make 3 times the "average" monthly income for my country and I didn't graduate from college.

Still, I can relate to what you say about your daughter. When I have my own son/daughter I would like to show them the value of education. Sort of hard to say "stay in school" when dad was/is a drop-out himself. :/ lol

There are many rich and successful who do not have an educational degree. However, I think the number of such people is very limited.

Will I would like to congratulate you from the bottom of my heart on your achievement, courage and patience. You have created a milestone. You will be an example to many of us here. I can assure you that your wife and daughter will be very proud of you.

Wishing you all the very best for your degree and thanks for sharing such experience with us.

    Cheers!!
