What's Your Opinion of Alcohol?

What's your opinion of alcohol?

Not so much looking for ideas for my next party > but curious to see what other Warriors think of drinking and what impact it has (if any) on their work.

Do you drink? How much? How often? What type? If you drink, do you feel that you do so lightly or in moderation, or do you run into problems with it? If not, did you do so at one point, or stay away altogether? What are your feelings on it, what are your experiences?

Discuss..

I stopped when I entered my 20's, although I'm not tee-total. I have the occasional beer, wine or tequila. For me occasional means 1 drink every 2 -4 weeks.

The biggest reason I stopped was because it was aggravating a repetitive strain injury in my wrists. My wrists would hurt very badly after a night out. I play guitar and nothing is more important to me than being able to play music.

So I cut down to almost 0. Now I only have the occasional drink at birthdays or at a restaurant.

I hated having hang-overs anyway (though they could be partially prevented by drinking lots of water the night before). It's such a waste of time to be in that state.

Alcohol is nothing to do with our help. It is in fact the health destroyers. I stopped drinking for almost 10 years already.

I drank and partied when I was 19 and 20 but stopped pretty quickly after that. I just didn't like what could happen to me and my dreams if I continued to do that, so I stopped. But, I got sick a few years later and haven't been able to drink anyways for the past 6 years, and it honestly is not something that I miss. Alcohol is a great thing to enjoy but can be very dangerous, just like any addiction.

I haven't had a drink in about 10 years. I never drank much before that anyway; never understood why people enjoyed getting blitzed then being hung over.

There's nothing wrong with alcohol if it's consumed in moderation, a drink here or there. Once it becomes a weekly type deal or the binges start, then the alcohol is a tool for escaping, which is not good.

Alcohol, in excess, can be very bad for your health. But if taken in moderation, can even improve it.

Here's an interesting article that shows the 6 most surprising ways that alcohol can actually be good for you:

Interesting study - I knew about some of the benefits, but not all that were mentioned in the study. I have it in moderation every now and then, but I try to avoid it when working as it typically makes me not want to work much - it basically cuts down on my productivity!

Alcohol and myself have a negative relationship. The first time I ever got drunk I tried to slit my wrists. Turns out I turn into a very depressed drunk. Since then I only enjoyed a drink about once a year just to celebrate something. However, in these last few years I have had to cut back all together because of the medications I am on. While I have nothing against alcohol itself, it is very evident to me that this is a personal decision that people have to make whether or not they have a drink or two.

Sarah, it's very wise of you to pretty much abstain from alcohol, given the effect that it has on you. Drugs and other substances seem to have diverse effects on different people, and it's pretty clear that alcohol has a very detrimental effect on your psyche. Some people are clearly not meant to drink it much or at all, and some can handle it just fine - the key is to realize which type you are.

Although I look at alcohol as poison to me I have nothing bad to say about it. It had a very bad effect on me but I have friends who drink socially and that's fine here. It's not that alcohol is good or bad. Some people like me have a problem with it. I don't drink and life is good. I drink and life gets very, very bad in a hurry!

Personally I don't feel the need to drink at all. I may have one or 2 drinks over a 3 month period.

One misconception people think of allot of the time with alcohol is that when you drink you have to get blitzed, bombed, etc. You can have a drink, enjoy yourself, enjoy the flavor and in the end enjoy the whole experience.

It's rather funny... when friends come over they see the number of bottles I have they are all like "Drink Much?" They don't realize that many of those bottles have been sitting around for 3+ years. I probably loose more to evaporation then I do consumption.

At least the bottles are getting better with age. LOL

I am not a big drinker, but I can have a half glass of red wine if I'm having cheese, crackers or other food which suits it.
I do like a glass of vodka with squash occasionally too! Not good for the brain they say, kills off the brain cells but 1 glass is great after a long week!

However I am more of a health fanatic, so don't/can't drink too much. It can be addictive quickly and an escape if taken too often.

I have a glass of wine every once in awhile, but in general, I can take it or leave it.

Other types of alcohol always made me feel crappy, even in small amounts. After discovering I have an intolerance to gluten, I'm pretty sure it was from drinking alcohol that is distilled from grains with gluten.

As my HDL's have a tendency to be low, I *should* drink more red wine, I just don't really like it. I like the sweet whites.

There's nothing wrong with it as long as you manage your intake, but personally I don't drink, smoke or do anything that I feel burns away at the acute awareness I have of the world. I don't feel like it makes me a better person, so unless it's used as a social lubricant where necessary, then I'm not interested in it personally.

I think it's worth it to put things into perspective a bit and look at it this way: The fact that you have to ask this question, I think sort of answers itself. You wouldn't have to ask "What's your opinion on working hard to achieve results?" or "What's your opinion on creating awesome content / products / services?"

As a social lubricant it can be a great tool, and anyone who tells you otherwise is forgetting just how important and difficult social behavior in our species is. But as a general means of improving your life, no I would say it's certainly not the road to go down. There's more pot holes down that street than the many others you could be taking.

It depends on the person. For me, it makes me less aware of a person's reactions . . . I don't read them as well. It's actually harder for me to interact with them.

But, as for how it affects my work, it is a complete motivation killer. No beers before writing. And I found that once I passed about 30, my hangovers intensified horribly, so that's made me cut down a lot. I do enjoy drinking on weekends though - beer, whiskey, "sho-chu" (Japanese firewater, as I like to think of it).
A lot of the issues with alcohol consumption stem from binge drinking, and this is classified as 4 or more drinks within the space of a few hours. Medical experts caution against that, as it can be very hard on your liver and of course also causes killer hangovers, and it'd be much healthier to have 1-2 drinks daily, spread out over the course of a week.

I sometimes drink whiskey with coke while working, but nothing overboard. Most of the time when I get drunk is when someone visits me. It seems that they always bring a bottle and from there it starts. I got quick metabolism so my hang over lasts most of the time around 2 hours after a night of sleep.

I only drink when I have my once a month poker night at home with friends and family.
It makes the games more fun and the betting looser (even though I dont allow anyone to play for real money - i have a nice set of professional style poker chips).
We have a blast, no one is allowed to drive off (everyone is told to crash at the house) and no one goes overboard either.

I've definitley calmed down since college , can't take hangovers anymore, they kill me. I love my microbrew beers though, I'll kick back and relax with 1 or 2 just to enjoy the incredible taste, I'm talking good brews from Dogfish Head, Bells, Great Divide, Rogue etc.

Though I've never understood, like post above, how some people can drink and all of a sudden their a completely different person in a bad way. Even when friends and I go out and drink we're always fun, yet I've seen others at bars go from normal to f'n psycho when they start drinking. I don't know if it's psychological or what.....

Heidi, apparently new research has cropped up that shows moderate drinking actually increases your cognitive abilities - who would have thought that?!

The 6 Most Surprising Ways Alcohol Is Actually Good for You | Cracked.com

As with almost everything in life, moderation is key - it's far better and healthier to drink in moderation every day rather than go binge drinking once or twice every week, which can have very adverse effects on your overall health over time.

I drank a lot in my teens and early 20's. I wouldn't say I had a problem with how frequently I drank (once or twice a week) but at that stage I was drinking far too much on some nights. Often I'd consume anywhere between 20-40 standard drinks, waking up with little to no memory of parts of the night before and a terrible hang over.

It would be unfair to label alcohol as the issue itself though. I think when it comes to substance abuse there are always underlying factors that often aren't related to the substance at all. I think I was just at a stage where I was unhappy with my life and at the time alcohol was a good outlet for me to get away from it all for a night.

These days I'll drink maybe once a month or every 2 months and only have a drink or two on most occasions, 5-6 at most on a big night.

I think alcohol's great, it's just something you need to keep in check.

I think just like most other 20-something's, I went through a phase at 19-21'ish of going out to clubs and having a few too many drinks per night, probably once or twice a week for a year or so.

Flash to me now in mid-20's and I still occasionally go out with friends, but I don't binge like I used to. I probly have a few drinks a week on average, most of which is half glasses of wine with meals.

So long as alcohol doesn't either define or control you, I tend to think of it as a fairly neutral thing (don't look up to or down on people who drink/don't drink).

CRAP, you guys make me look BAD.

I'm a bartender but on my way out. Last day is August 13th, and I'm REALLY looking forward to the change. Being surrounded by booze and people making bad decisions the last 7 years has taken its toll on me and I'm incredibly ready to leave that environment.

That's actually the reason I'm pursuing IM. Unfortunately when I drink I GO for it, as my tolerance has really built up. It's not terribly uncommon for me to have 7 or so shots on shift, sometimes more. Lately I've done my best to cut back considerably. The deal breaker for me was admitting to myself how unproductive I am after a night of drinking. The couch calls to me!!

You guys have it right, and I really do look forward to a separation.

Pretty much agree with this 100%

I mainly drink when I'm in a good mood or very upset. When I say drink, I simply drink 1 (maybe 2) beers. And even then it can be once a week, once a month, or a couple times a week.

I really get annoyed when I mention to people that I drink when I feel crappy or have a stressful day. Having one beer simply helps me relax, let the day slow down and evens my mood. On the same end, when I'm really happy and drink...it calms me down and brings me to a more neutral mood.

It's pretty much a mood neutralizer. But that's why I don't drink often when I'm super happy, I like feeling good.

I don't think I've gotten drunk in over 2 years. No point, lol.

To me, alcohol tastes like crap. Even a few sips gives me a headache and makes me feel like crap. And when I wake up the next morning with a bad hangover and the aftertaste of puke on my tongue, I look like crap, feel like crap, and taste the crap all at once. Just an overall crappy experience for me.

So I just don't drink at all. But to each his own, not everybody gets a splitting headache with just two or three sips.

Patient: Yes I do and it's nice of you to ask. I'll have a whiskey and soda, please.

Alcohol's OK if you can do it. I always say if you can and you want to, go for it. If you can't, don't. Ever.

I personally went crazy on booze and had to stop years ago. Somehow I stayed just as crazy, though...

I'm almost a teetotaller...I could count on one hand the number of drinks I have each year.

I might have a sweet white wine or a spirits, but only ever one drink. I don't like the idea of having so much that I don't know what I'm doing!

I've never been a drinker, but one of the reasons I don't drink much is that I'm a volunteer in one of the emergency services in town. If we get a callout (that could be any time of the day or night) and you've been drinking you can't go for obvious reasons. We're a small group and sometimes struggle for numbers so I like to make sure I can get to as many as possible.

Alcohol will not ultimately help you do anything. Enjoy it socially and in moderation, but if you use it, you need it, and then you have a problem!

I still have yet to go through my "party and drink a lot of alcohol" phase. I'm 21 now and most of my friends are in that phase...but I just don't enjoy alcohol very much.

I'll occasionally have red wine. I love the taste. I never have more than two glasses in one night.

I rarely drink beer, but when I do (I prefer Dos Equis! LOL) I only have one or two.

I don't think I've ever heard the concept explained any better than this:

"Well you see, Norm, it's like this . . .A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of alcohol eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few drinks"..

I just love the people who say "I never touch alcohol for health reasons.....etc." There are documented bonafide health benefits to moderate alcohol intake. I just hope the people taking the hard stance on alcohol aren't chugging down their 6th coke (or even Diet Coke) of the day. I believe that sugar and artificial sweetners do more damage to the body than alcohol.

As for the effect it has on my work, I haven't noticed a big difference in the quality of output between when I have a beer or none. If anything, the drink helps me relax and get through 'writers block'.

I wish I could remember where I heard this. There is a person, who is known for his creativity and 'thinking outside the box'. When asked how he did it, he said he would lock himself in a room with absolutely no light, play his favorite music, and drink whiskey. Apparently what that did was eliminated one entire sense (sight) so the brain did not have to block out visual distractions, the music stimulated his creativity, and the alcohol allowed him to remove any limitations his brain may have had on a subject.

If anyone knows who this was I would like to know.

I have never tried this, but it sounds interesting.

Anyway, moderation is the key. A little could help, but more isn't necessarily better.

Thanks for all the replies so far... started the thread to get an idea of what people's relationship with the substance was and get an idea where everybody stands.

In my case, I generally didn't start drinking until about last summer, though I must admit back then I'd used it as an escape for the stuff I was going through at the time. Once that was all said and done though, I slowed down significantly - not only because I just didn't feel so strong a need, but I didn't like the physical impact it had on me. I don't get hangovers (I'm told that will change eventually so I count my lucky stars for now), but sometimes I still feel gross the next day - like I need to go work out. When I got serious about getting back in shape that also meant less drinking for me, because there's that whole thing about extra calories along with making it harder for your liver to process fat (when it's so busy dealing with alcohol)...

Anywho, now I occasionally go out (or stay in) with friends for a drink. About half my friends drink and the other half don't, so I get checks and balances with that. Even then, I generally know when to cut myself off: I don't like getting paranoid about what I may or may not have said, or losing chunks of time. Soooooooo it's a balancing act. There will be times where I'll be really jonesing for it, but then after that I can look at an alcoholic beverage and not care less.

    • By the way, there is no way to communicate the glorious feeling of discovering the great business advantage of not drinking. I'm talking from my own perspective, meaning I used to be a flaming alcoholic back in the day and I stopped. (I just checked--alcohol-wise, I've been sober for over 20 years.)

      What is the advantage?

      Simple.

When you stay sober and everyone else around you is getting plastered, you can keep a lid on information you should not be disclosing, but they are blabbering all over themselves. You can learn more useful stuff from one cocktail party that way then from 20 business meetings. I speak from experience, both as blabbermouth and as "polite listener."

I have yet to attend my first Internet marketing convention, but I have no doubt there are plenty of vultures drinking colored water in the bar just waiting for their prey to come in and get liquored up at the end of the day. I will see when I finally get there. (And, no, I do not intend to become one of those vultures. I'm doing this go-around in my life according to a better standard. )

      Something to think about.

If you must drink, at least don't do it around Internet marketers if you have information on Internet marketing stuff (like sensitive details on your own plans and sites!) you wish to remain yours.

Some of the most serious effects on the body of drinking alcoholic drinks are caused by damage done to the liver by alcohol. If alcohol is frequently in the blood in large amounts, it causes the liver cells to die and prevents the liver from working efficiently. This disease is called Cirrhosis. In the case of a generally healthy person, if alcohol is taken infrequently or only in moderate amounts, any damaged liver tissue has time to repair itself.

Me and alcohol had a bad breakup and now I have a restraining order...lol.

On a more serious note, I choose not to drink because I can't drink in moderation. When I drink life falls down around me and I just say pour me another. As for affecting my work habits - yes it did - along with every other daily task. I wasn't productive by any means and I certainly didn't want to go to work anyway - I'd rather stay home and kick back a few more drinks to get rid of that hangover.

Some people can handle just having a drink now and then and that's great. I just can't do it.

So, I have been sober going on 6 years now. Today, I am productive. I set goals for myself and achieve them. I care for my family and run our household. I'm proud of myself.

It's quite a coincidence that I ran across this topic because one of my goals is to share more of myself to make better connections with people. Sharing about myself takes me way out of my comfort zone, especially topics that show my vulnerabilities. Thank you Emily - you made me reflect on something I haven't consciously thought about in a while.

I like alcohol. I used to love getting as drunk as possible because that's what everybody did and what they still do.

I would say I've been paralytic more than once. I've broke my nose thanks to passing out and falling flat on my face, been thrown out of clubs for not being able to stand, woken up lying in my own vomit and _ _ _ _ _. You fill in the blanks.

I'm not boasting because being in that state isn't something to be proud of but that's how it was. People might think it's disgusting when you see drunk kids or adults urinating and throwing up in the street but that's one of the consequences of the drinking culture here unfortunately. Maybe it's the same where you are, I don't know?

The only real problem I have with alcohol is how it affects other people. I know I can drink and I just like to enjoy myself and have a good time, but alcohol changes other people into being aggresive or violent or just plain annoying. Fortunately I have never had a problem with anybody looking for trouble with me and extremely lucky when I really think about it, but it only takes a bit of bad luck to wind up getting your head kicked in or worse thanks to alcohol.

I've never really drunk alcohol because I enjoy drinking it or I enjoy the taste, it has been 99% of the time just to get drunk. If there is an occassion where I might be expected to drink a couple of beers I hardly ever bother. I'll just have a coke or something else instead, mainly because once I start to feel tipsy it's very tempting to carry on. I never drink wine and never really have. I've probably only drunk about 2 bottles of wine in total, ever.

I have had one drink this year and that was last Friday. Admittedly it was a bottle of JD but I just fancied getting a bit sloshed. Other than that, in the last 2 years I've drunk hardly any alcohol and I don't miss it.

I like the feeling of being drunk but now I'm getting older the hangovers have really killed alcohol for me. I've never minded throwing up that much due to alcohol but I can't do headaches. I quite often get a weekend headache as it is (Google it) which is bad enough but I can't do anything with a hangover, I'm like a zombie. Who wants to be stuck indoors nursing a self inflicted misery when there's so many better things to do just for the feeling of being drunk for a few hours? I know I don't.

My mom is an alcoholic. She hasn't taken a sip of beer for almost 4 years now.

    Am I against alcohol? No.

It's all about the person behind the alcohol and their responsibility levels.

For example, my girlfriend can drink and be responsible at the same time. I could drink, but I'm probably going to act pretty silly. My mom could drink and she'd be the same, but she'd want another drink and would spend all of her money. My brother would drink and he'd want to kill someone.

    It's all about the person.

I could have easily became an alcoholic simply because I love to party and alcoholism was in our family. I learned very quickly that I could counter the hangovers by chasing my drinks with glasses of water. But I'm rather maudlin when I'm drunk and I've been known to black out, so ever since the age of 25 (many years ago!) I drink only in moderation if at all.

Now when I do drink occasionally, I drink dry red wine. They say it's good for the heart. On New Years Eve each year, I allow myself an indulgent and celebratory drinking night.

I know a lot of people who can't go without drinking every day. The town I live in has the busiest beer store in Canada apparently, so what does that tell you?

Dealing with alcoholics is not fun. I used to be a bartender and a waitress back in the day too, so I've seen it all.

Alcohol is just too easily abused and some people who drink too much do things that they would never dream of doing sober.

And then they get in their cars and drive.

      That just makes me crazy.

I've decided that I can't reach my goals if I abuse alcohol or drugs, so I try not to use too often. Notice, I said abuse and not use. I totally agree with you. Everything should be done in moderation except for Internet Marketing. LOL.

that's not an easy question to address , Mary, because we all react differently, have different tolerance levels, etc. What may be moderate for me may not be for someone else.

I think you have to know your body. I now know when I should stop drinking. Many people don't know their own body signals, or they simply choose to ignore those signals.

The path from moderation to alcoholism can be for many reasons, of which I think financial stress or even stress in general (for any reason, really!) is the biggest one people start to drink to excess. They want to forget their troubles, if just for a while.

Or they simply think they work too hard not to drink. I know people with that type of mindset. Someone I know very well is like that.

clear your mind and you will see and think more clearly. then you can go for more instead of going for less. you get closer to what you want instead of further away. you either do it or you dont. Ask yourself is what your doing right now powerful positive and productive and moving you in the right direction?

I only drink occasionally and never to excess. I don't like the hangover the next morning and there are a lot of other serious health implications caused by excessive drinking.

Also, I don't like the way alcohol interferes with the way you process decisions. So I may have a few beers now and then but that's it.

I use to drink regularly not like an alcoholic or anything just a lot of beer and some liquor on occasion. I found that all the altercations i got into throughout my life were all alcohol related.

So I choose to stay sober of everything, I have become a nutrition junkie and exercise freak so I am very healthy. I still have a drink on a rare occasion like a few times a year but nothing serious I find that I act silly and do unacceptable things intoxicated.

So I just focus on making myself a better person mentally and physically and work toward being a successful person while I'm alive. No more drinking just working to become financially secure. I want to travel the world and provide for my family when I have on someday.

Back in 1999, I went out with some coworkers, one who was a recovering alcoholic. They were all drinking Odoul's(spelling?), a nonalcoholic drink. Not having ever tasted an alcoholic beverage, or really been around it, I said sure, why not? It was nasty, after one sip, I gave it to someone at the table.

My wife now occasionally picks up a cheap bottle of wine that lasts her a few weeks. She's tried to let me taste it, but when I get close to the glass the fumes push me away.

Every couple of years I have the thought of joining the high brow society and drinking some wine. A few years ago I became addicted to World of Warcraft, so now I just avoid the possibility.

You know.. I recently saw someone holding up a sign saying that marijuana is safer than alcohol.

To be real, I'm against marijuana, primarily because I just don't like being around people who smoke, hate the smell, and it's just irritating lol.

BUT, when that scenario is thrown in front of me..

    I agree.

If I was forced to choose one or the other before making a serious decision, I would have to choose marijuana.

Alcohol is not only dangerous, but it just makes people make completely idiotic decisions.

The more you drink, the worse it gets.

I've even had a roommate that tried to commit suicide by drinking.

I've also had roommates that smoked marijuana.. and to be fair, even though I kicked them out because of it, they never did anything wrong.

    Just my thoughts.

  • Personally, I do not like drinking and never have. I can honestly say I have never had alcohol and some people find this odd! It's just not my thing. There's so many things that can go wrong while you're "under the influence." I just choose to be safe and totally in control. :-)

I just recently stopped smoking (I'm 16 and started when 13), about 50 days ago and altough I never really LIKED alcohol - I'll try to resist getting into it as much as possible. Yeah, once glas of vino a day is good for your body, but personally I don't wan't to risk it.
Then again, as a 16 year old - what the **** do I know

I don't like drinking when there is a party.. You can organize a party without drinking or if you really can't do it you may serve wines instead.. The thought of getting together with your family and friends is more than enough rather then making everyone in your party get drunk. Enjoy your party!

I don't like having too much blood in my alcohol system.

Alright, seriously...alcohol drunk responsibly (no drinking and driving, et cetera) and in moderation (which varies somewhat from person to person) is long since proven to be health-enhancing (and, sometimes, creativity-inspiring). Alcohol consumed in this way, and even along with the occasional "bender", does no harm at all to the liver, brain, or any other part of the body.

Alcohol is a powerful substance, and it's true that 11% of all those who imbibe will turn into alcoholics. Having said that, a helluva lot more than 11% of the people in modernized civilizations today are diabetics or overweight (often grossly so). And 58% of liver damage is due to being overweight.

No comment about alcohol. As a wf I suggest you please give it up .
Just take it friendly, don't take it other wise.
You can take cool bear like red bull type or normal soda, with fried beef or duck with a variety of salad for your party.I think it will work.
    Ok best of luck.

Wine with food is a good combination. Beer on a hot day helps to relax and cool down. If you know how to consume moderately, I do not see why alcohol is bad.

I have never been sorry that I grew up in a house without alcohol, and consequently, have never felt a need to bring that into my life. Life has challenges enough that we can't avoid, to go out and intentionally add one.

Occasionally, a beer in the summer, and a glass of wine in the winter. Thats all.
I wouldn't say the same for the coffee though, which I cannot stay without 2- 3 each day.

I'm like many others here and would drink until I was falling down drunk when I was 19-20.

I went through a period where I loved strawberry margaritias and would have a couple a week in my early to mid-twenties.

Then, four years ago, I went out to celebrate my birthday with my husband and friends. I ended up getting falling down drunk. As in, I fell down in a McDonalds when my drunk self announced I had to have french fries at 1 in the morning. It was awful. Worst hangover of my life!

Since then I mostly stick to red wine, and even then it's sparingly. My husband and I have been known to occasionally split a bottle of merlot in bed over a platter of cheeses and breads and fruits when the kiddos spend the night with their grandparents. I would say if I have two drinks a month these days, I'm drinking more than normal.

I have nothing against alcohol or those who choose to imbibe responsibly, but after that vicious hangover a few years ago, I can't really do it anymore.

My husband has recently gotten into homebrewing, and I love helping him. He always laments that I won't drink the final product with him. I hate beer LOL, but I do like the science experiment of brewing it.
