How I got hired as a Telemarketer at Just 16 years old - My journery!
Yes, i did work as a telemarketer at 16...Here's how it all happened:
Before i get get into the whole story about the interviews... A little background:
As i kid, I grew up in a very traditional family. My life depended on my grades:p. If my grades were good, Everyone was happy...Nobody got hurt. But if i flunked, (Which i often did...especially in math) A nasty beating awaited when i reached home. My dad would usually come home late... So drunk he would always end up knocking on several of our neighbors doors and would have trouble finding his own home.
I'd show him the report card and in the back of my head i secretly prayed that he wouldn't beat me. But, then he would remove is belt and start whipping me with the buckle, wherever he could...I once tried to run but he grabbed me and locked me in and continued beating me. Somehow i became numb to it. I knew what to expect.
My mom and my dad were divorced when i was four...They got back together when i was 9 and my life took a turn for the worst. All my mom and dad would do was fight. Anyways, my dad passed away due to cancer when i was 12. But when he found out that he wasn't gonna live long enough. He changed, A LOT! Me and my dad became extremely good with each other...Like old friends. We took the longest road trip ever on his enfield bullet. I knew he loved me till he took his last breath and i know that he didn't mean to hurt me. We all have our issues.
Fast forward to when i was 15, My grandfather passed away in my very arms. Its was something i never wanted to experience, i wasn't prepared for another funeral... But life's a B*^%H!
I don't know what got over me but i decided i wouldn't go to school anymore...EVER!! So i dropped out when i was in the 10th grade and spent a few months just sitting around the house doing nothing. Playing games and just killing time.
It was during that time that i saw this little ad in the newspaper about an opening as a telemarketer in a small company. In the ad they mentioned that the only skill required was a 'decent' command of the english language. Where i live, there aren't many people who understand the language very well. If you've every called up DELL's customer support, you know what i mean.
Anyways, So i call up the number mentioned in the ad. They guy over the phone seemed insanely impressed. He said i could could walk in tomorrow morning for the interviews. They had like 5 stages that we had to pass in order to get hired as a telemarketer.
The guy i spoke to on the phone said i had to bring in my resume. I had never written a resume in my whole damn life. So i searched online for some templates. I finally ended up with a shabby looking resume. And yes, i mentioned my DOB in the resume.
The next day i walk into the office and it was like a fish market. 200 applicants had showed up and most of them were graduates fresh outta college. I suddenly realized that all this was a big joke and i could never actually get hired. I decided to quietly leave, just then a lady called out my name "Is Kunal Here??" I stopped i raised my hand...Almost in shock. She said they were expecting me and that i was up first!
My ego just got HUGE! Out of the 200 people who had showed up there, Those puffed up suits choose to see me first. I walked into the room with the biggest smile EVER! I went in and saw 3 people sitting in a distant corner of a weirdly large room. (I later found out that the "room" was actually our workplace but they hadn't started "dividing" it yet)
They asked me several questions, but never about my age...which seemed pretty weird. So towards the end i asked them if they had seen my resume and the lady sitting on the left replied saying that they hadn't and started searching for my resume in the mountain of resumes and pulled out mine.
They scanned through it and then started talking among themselves, i knew they were discussing the issue with my age. Anyways, the guy sitting in the middle (the one whom i spoke with over the phone) insisted the other ladies that were sitting there to let me go through the next few stages of the interviews. Which were:
A) The classic : "sell me this pen"
B) They gave us a sales letter we had to mug up and using just the stuff in the letter we had to pitch a product to a person sitting on the other side of the phone and if the guy sitting on the other side of the phone thought we'd do well "in the trenches" we'd move on...(95% of the people were sent back home by then)
C) We had to speak on any of our favorite subject for 10 minutes. (not as easy as i thought it would be)
D) Only 10 people were left at this point - A phone call with the process manager in Australia. (I was told to say i was 18 if we ever did talk about my age)
Anyways out out the 200 qualified college graduates and people who were wayy older than me, Only 5 people were selected at the end of the day and i was one of them. I was later told that I'd actually never need a license or anything to prove my age and that the actual company was based in Australia.
I worked there for almost a year before the process ended and the company closed. I made the most sales in my team. When i asked the guy why he hired me...he said that he somehow "sensed" that i was a good salesman... This was the weirdest thing i ever heard. I sort of get it now... i think!
After that i decided to get into music and that is when i discovered Djing and turntableism, I learned from the best in the biz and fast forward a few months....Here i am, i am now a freelance deejay.
I work my own hours and play the kinda gigs i wanna play.(Not a privilege that a lot of dj's get to enjoy) I also have a few amazon sites that bring in close to $800 - $1000 a month collectively and i am slowly scaling it up.
Life is full of ups and downs, its full of sad and weird experiences ... But its a story worth telling.
I just felt like writing this for no apparent reason....I like telling stories, so today i decided to share my own, Thank you for reading it guys...
Cheers,
kunal
