Have you ever stopped and observed how you speak, not only to others but more importantly to yourself. I have found that nothing kills a great idea faster than our own self-talk. Let me give you an example, you have this great idea for a new service that could make life easier for people and as you develop the idea in your head it begins to take off, you can see people using and praising the service all the while you are making a good living providing a useful service and enjoying your true calling. Then along comes your self-talk aka Mr./Ms. ego and begins to tell you that its a bad idea and it will never fly and bingo, dream over. I suggest you take control of your thoughts back and when you notice the negative self-talk begin, stop and observe but don't feed into it instead allow the thought to be. Once you have stopped it from growing begin to slowly reverse it by adding positive fuel, to use the above example go back to the fact that many people can benefit from said service their lives will be improved and they will be genuinely appreciative of you and your work. That's what I refer to as "switching it up" and many of my clients have used this one technique to go from "we're doomed" to "anything is possible" in short order and with vigilance it will become second nature. So be patient with yourself and just pay attention, you will be amazed at the results.

Try this: The next time you are in conversation with someone and they are being negative about something or someone, intentionally begin stating the positive attributes of what they are speaking of and observe as their tone and words move in a positive direction. It's a very simple strategy and amazingly powerful.

To Your Success,
Mike

I agree. Sometimes it can be difficult to get the ship turned, so to speak, but once you manage to change the direction of the conversation towards the positive side, it is easier the next time you encounter the same individual, even on different topics.

Unfortunately, there are some people that seem to look at everything in a negative light. It's as if nothing in their life is good, and talking with them can drag your own emotional state down unless you take action to turn them around. Sometimes you need to start with the smallest changes, and build upon that, bit by bit, to get them to think more positively. In the end, it is certainly worth it, both for them and for your own peace of mind.

I totally agree with you Rick. Where I work at everyone seems to complain about everything that they don't like about our job (Me included), and I understand that is the wrong approach, but the thing I have a hard time with is how to go about talking to them about positive things, so instead I will just nod in agreement with what they're saying and just walk away.

I don't really tell anybody the things that I learn from all the personal development books that I have read. I feel that it would be like preaching to them about being more positive about life and their job, because in these tough economic times, everyone who has a job should be very grateful for it even if it isn't the best job in the world.

Anyway, I would greatly appreciate your take on this situation, as well as Mike's thoughts too.

      Regards,
      Victor

Wow, really hit the nail on the head with this post!

Although I've been "working" on my IM business since 2007, I only recently began the journey to a true business that I own that I can be proud of. And it only came about when I finally told my inner negative voice to shut up!

I can remember countless great ideas I've had over the years that I half implemented, some of them even generated a few dollars or a couple of subscribers. Then enters Ms. Negative telling me how terrible my idea is, or how 1000's of people already had this idea and are doing it better than I ever could, or how big of a waste of my time this all was.

When I finally got sick and tired of being sick and tired, I found the strength to quiet my negative voice and amplify my positive feelings.

Now I'm not a millionaire yet, but I feel like I'm actually on track for the first time in my IM career.

    Great post!

I have found that letting these thoughts be is the best approach, by that I mean don't fight them. I believe that feeding our minds with as many positive influences as possible, gives us the power to gently redirect the thoughts that do not serve us. As for the people with the negative points of view, when you are in conversation with them you must first and foremost be true to yourself. If you develop integrity and remain true to yourself in your thoughts and words, the people who are negative will either adjust when they are around you or they will disappear from your life, which is a good thing.

Yes, I did that 6 years ago. I observed that people around me do not like the way I talk, the way I go about things. So, I asked people to record videos of me when they do not like me. I saw them all, and worked hard to get over it. Today I might be the happiest man considering this problem.
