Quiz: What is the opposite of decision?

Reading a chapter in Think and Grow Rich this morning. Read a powerful statement that is really motivating me today. Before I share the author's statement, I'm offering a question for discussion.

In your opinion, what's the opposite of decision?

Hmm... interesting. How about going with someone else's decision.

Hey, want to get a bite to eat?
    Sure.
Where do you want to go?
I don't really care. You decide.

Let me know how I did.

      BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ... we have a winner!

I was reading Chap. VIII: Decision in TAGR (for the 3rd time. i'm a slow learner ) and this statement jumped out at me:

"Procrastination, the opposite of decision, is a common enemy, which practically every man must conquer."

Of course! All one has to do to conquer procrastination is to make a decision! Duh (sound of me slapping my forehead)... And yes, not making a decision is making a decision. But for me, it becomes a helpful formula/principle that I can put into practice immediately, e.g. when I see that I am procrastinating, I'll have the opportunity right then and there, to make a decision.

No more chastising myself, no more feeling 'fitful,' no more asking myself "why can't I just take action..." etc. Once I identify that I'm procrastinating, it will be my cue to MAKE A DECISION.

    Hey Cynthea,
Great book, I use it a lot in my coaching. My answer is that "decision" does not have an opposite. As, once you are given a choice on something even not deciding is a decision. Of course your decision can move you closer or further from your objective. Love to start my day with such a philosophical question.
    To your success,
    Mike:rolleyes:

A good point! What decision is required for inspiration to flow? Ideas are what make this world go round so when we decide to STOP thinking and actually let the divine flow through we manifest something far greater than what our intellect could 'decide' because most of its decisions are based on past experiences...but yea, once the inspiration is there you must act upon it or else you're just a procrastinating slacker

The opposite of decision occurs when you encounter situations for which usually a decision must be taken, but are totally are unaware of the fact that you have to take one, so don't act because you even don't know even think about it, so by that you can't take the decision of not deciding upon something, as long as you aren't even thinking about a potential act, even if you know the subject.

Short example: You are in a random place, and a random person is telling you about an event or problem, for which usually tends to reach for help. Sometimes and not that often, you conceive the problem just like a story or fact, without analyzing it and move further on your things.

So without realizing this, not acting in situation on which you would normally do, makes the opposite of a decision, where you are aware of and willing to take a decision.

The opposite of a decision, can be used by experienced people, to send a message that would be interpreted wrong or better saying not at all, but actually by sending the same message again, it will seem unchanged and the one who heard it for the second time, knows that it was his mistake not to realize what he had to do. VERY interesting question.

I don't really think there is an opposite to "decision" itself. You always DECIDE about something - you either DECIDE to start now or you DECIDE not to start now. Those are two opposites, but they are both decisions. You can never DO something or even NOT DO something without deciding (not) to do it

EC, I asked the question because the answer was stated in Think and Grow Rich and I thought it would be fun to get people thinking. I don't know if you read my post mid-way through the thread, but if not, here's where Hill states the opposite of decision:

"Procrastination, the opposite of decision, is a common enemy, which practically every man must conquer."

And this is what I wrote in response to that quote:

Think and Grow Rich is my Favorite book. Author Napoleon Hill really hit the nail on the head with the lessons he told us as learned from Andrew carnegie and other business greats. And yes the opposite of not making a quick decision is procrastination. Lets not forget about Doubt and fear either. Many small business owners and newbies to entrepreneurship suffer from these two things, which are actually one morphed into the other. But that could be another quiz for the forum. Which comes first, Doubt or Fear :-)

The opposite of decision is indecision. lol Sorry but you asked for it. Not choosing anything is already a decision, and so is being at a place. But not knowing which option to choose for all the time even if it takes 10 years to make a decision is indecision... as in the bits where you are trying to make a decision.

When you make a decision, you chose and remove the other options.

When you make no decision, you don't chose and take all options.

Obviously, the latest is bad because you are not focused on what you do.

Butch, you're right on re: fear keeping one from making a decision.

I've also learned something new about fear recently that has probably been obvious to others, and it's this:

When I've made a decision and find myself 'forcing' something to happen, really pushing something... I'm actually doing that based on fear. In other words, it's a fear-based action.

I found that pretty interesting and wanted to share.

Honestly decision is nothing powerful... there still lacks one part to that which makes it worth something: inspiration.

When a person is inspired before making a decision to do something, they take the idea of "decision" up a notch by making a commitment. Commitments are only powerful when inspired by a life mission.

In fact a decision to make your life better is no different than the decision for which cereal you wish to eat in the morning. We decide things all the time, but a true worthy decision that will take your somewhere needs to be elevated to a commitment using the inspiration of a self found destiny... aka your life's mission.

I find having a life's mission is easy, especially since I live a Spiritual life over wanting things that are considered "fleshly". It's about the human connection with one another and with our Spirit that drives me to do what I do.

So I'd have to say the opposite of decision is actually commitment. One is temporary and superficial to the desires you really have, the other is permanent and falls inline with your destiny.

EDIT 10/11/2011: I've added a new response as I've had a change in philosophy...

    Definitely – Indecision.

I visited a friend of mine who was finishing Marine boot camp; I asked him what was the most important thing he learned during the process…. He pondered for a moment and replied – Never hesitate to make a decision; if it’s wrong, you can adjust and make another one – if you stand there and think about things too long; it’s very likely you’ll be dead.

There is no such thing as an opposite to decision. You either decide to do something or you decide to do nothing. Procrastination is not the opposite of decision, it is simply deciding to put off doing something you decided to do.
If you choose something over something else you have just made a decision in favor of what you choose. There are some things that don’t have an opposite just different such as the opposite of black is not white. They are just a different color and neither has an opposite.

Hey great quiz. I've read this book and didn't remember that. It was ingenious to make a quiz about this.

Here is another thing Napoleon Hill says about Procastination.

“Procrastination is the bad habit of putting of until the day after tomorrow what should have been done the day before yesterday.”

Procrastination is a decision... only a few people here really answered it correctly, there is no opposite of decision. Our entire thought process on a conscious level is governed by decision... it only becomes a power once you utilize decision making as choice.

Procrastination is a decision to do something else other than something that you've already decided to accomplish.

For example, let's say my goal is to complete a mind map for something. If I procrastinate then I technically must be deciding to do something else instead of working on the mind map. The fact that the idea of making a mind map exists creates the existence of procrastination... so if I were to watch TV instead, that would be procrastinating the mind map, but it's still a decision nonetheless.

The power of choice would be to realize I can either watch TV and put it off or I can just do the mind map, and then choosing the one that fits your aspirations. If you aspire to be lazy then watch tv, if you aspire to be successful at your goal then do the goal.

Now if the mind map task never existed and I watched TV, then procrastination doesn't exist because there was no preexisting task. Procrastination is a decision... if decision has an opposite, it is choice, but really that is more adjacent then an opposition.

Really we constantly make decisions, but some purposeful and others not so purposeful. The closes thing to opposing Nonpurposeful decision is to practice awareness towards PRESENT time action in congruence with the PRESENT time goals that you need to achieve, and then using the power of making harmonious choice to see the goal through.
