In the beginning was the word opens a famous book. I wonder if that is wrong. Let's face it, you must have a thought before you can speak a word. Can't happen any other way.

Any thoughts on this line of thinking?

Thinking before speaking any word is very important b'coz by mistake if you speak any think wrong it cannot be taken back. So, stick to it...

Yes, thought before word, because language developed as a way for us as creatures to convey those thoughts.

      Here's the thing though...

Learning more words allows you to have more, or maybe that should be more *productive* thoughts.

Different words hit different buttons in the brain, so increasing vocabulary opens oursleves up to a wider array of thoughts, and therefore different actions.

Actually I would like to differ. I had the same question, and I read that recent studies have shown that thoughts and word come together. Because words are simply the tools to interpret meanings of things and thoughts.

From the perspective of psychology this is true. Further, your thoughts are deeply connected to your emotions. This is often addressed in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). When you are angry, your thoughts will be affected directly. This will further change what you do or do not say.

The idea of thought before word is to remind us to be mindful of our thoughts. We can't control what we think, but we can control what we say.

I agree 100% with you on that point. Thoughts always come before words and intention always comes before thoughts.

There are some things that you can think about, but can't express with words. However, everything you say is connected to a thought, whatever it may be.

People don't recognize it, but words have a sort of "magical" quality to them. Every time you say something, it has an effect on your environment, however little it may be. It has even been said that words and thoughts can have a direct effect on our very molecular structure...

Words are powerful beyond belief. Words can start wars and turn the most rational man into a beast. This is why you have to be very careful with what you say and who you say it to, because the repercussions could be way more far reaching than you may think...
