Is 25 years old too old to succeed?
This news basically meant that I could not take summer classes. So I had to drop two of my classes for the summer, and now take four classes during the winter. I told my mom and dad this news. They started to yell at me.
The last thing I remember was my dad needing to end his phone call at work with the words, "You are not taking education seriously enough!"
The truth is I don't really want to be an English teacher. I only chose English as a major in college because I liked to write about my days in my journal as a kid. I don't know who else to tell this too. My parents don't understand, and all of my good high school friends now have successful, full-time jobs. One makes about $60,000 a year as an air inspector, and I assume the other one makes about $80,000 a year working in a accounting firm.
When my friends are sharing stories about where they have traveled or where they plan to travel next, I am mostly quiet and pretend to put a smile on my face.
Sometimes they will ask me what I'm currently doing with my life though, so I tell them that I'm still taking classes to get my teaching credential. They then boost my mood up telling me to not worry because teacher jobs will eventually open up soon (I think out of sympathy). I nod and go along with it, even though I don't have any interest to be one (yes, I said it!)
Even though I tell myself to keep trying, despite being felt looked down upon because I having a secret obsession with internet marketing, I wonder what I am doing...
After I graduated from college (22), I read an article that guaranteed you make $3,000 a month. That was June of 2008 and now tomorrow is June of 2011. Three years have basically gone by and I've never even made $10 a month. The only thing I made was a few hundred dollars, a bunch of failed websites, and now close to a whopping $2,000 in credit card debt.
Nowadays, you see success stories all the time from teenagers who make $10,000 a month. I think of my past and say, "I wish I had started this earlier so I wouldn't have gotten myself into this crazy mess." But I'm no longer a teenager. I'm 25 years old and still living in my parents' home.
My friends recently posted pictures of them traveling on Facebook, but I didn't want to look. I didn't go with them because I didn't have the money, but really, my dream is to travel. I want to so badly see the skyscrapers of Hong Kong or visit the city streets of Japan.
Even though I'm taking the proper graduate school path, I could eventually get into the whole teaching thing, and save up enough money, but I know that would make me miserable.
In the world of education, most people, such as peers and faculty, are overly serious about small things.
You guys are so much more chill, laid-back, and cooler.
Anyway, to close this up, I feel stuck. Three whole years have gone by and I have nothing to show for it. I don't want to disappoint my parents, yet I don't want to go down that path either.
I'm supposed to be at the age where I have the job, the lovely wife, and the beautiful house.
That was what I was thought was going to happen when I was 18. But none of these things happened, and I feel like I've failed myself.
