Work from Home or renting an office?

Hi there,

I kind of have problem working from home now and then, simply because I rarely get out of the house and it makes me feel anti social now and then. Plus my motivation to get out of bed gets harder over time.

I see here in Ireland I could rent an office room for about 400 EUR/Month, which seems good.

I was wondering how many of you are doing this, and if it helps you to get your work done.

I have exactly the same problem

I work about 16 hours a day 6 days a week and only leave my computer for a bite to eat or drink etc

I was thinking about renting a office as i feel it gives me more motavation, plus at home there are so many things to distract you

Distraction at home is one of my biggest problems. It really is hard, especially when you are not motivated.

Working from home is a good idea if you are a self motivated person and you can really achieve much if there are no distractions from anyone and you can save alot which otherwise would have been spent on office rent. However it may not be a good idea if you are wasting alot of valuable time since people are most active during the day and you want to make the most use of this time. All the best in your final decision.

I can see why working in an office would help you concentrate more, first of all it's a more formal place, so you will naturally feel in the 'working' mood and as mentioned above, there will also be less distractions at an office. You just really have to weigh up the pros and cons for you personally and then decide which is the best option.

    Been exactly where you are.

Renting an office (in my case a shared office with a designer) was the best move I made for my business.

Means you're getting out and about, more social aspects, improved motivation - plus it's an option. You don't have to do a 9 to 5 Monday to Friday just because you have an office; it gives you the option to use the office sometimes when you get 'cabin fever', and you can still work from home at other times.

You can operate from home as it is close to the market where you business links and customers are . Otherwise , rent a office .

I always have a hard time working at home. So many "little" distractions.
If there was a big project, i tend to doze off when i work at home.
Same thing when I was in college. So when we got serious about IM, my friend and I decided to rent a (very) small office. A place where we can just put our laptop and work. No TV in the office of course.

To each his own i guess.

Hi - I have this problem too, and thinking it over this weekend decided to take a couple of steps before I leave my job outside so that I'm prepared to deal with it.

    1. Take everything out of my home office that is not immediate business related. i.e. Just because I might want to blog on a reality show (not) doesn't mean I need to keep a tv in the home office.

    2. I will take at least two days and work a few hours those days in a coffeeshop or somewhere like that. That will give me a little outside social interaction. Seems to have worked for others, might work for me.

Interesting question, I wonder how many work from home or have rented an office on warrior forum. Off to do a search

After working outside the home for a couple of decades, I like the ease of working at home in my own office. That said, I have to be very careful of interruptions from family members who don't understand how "playing" on a computer can be work.

My biggest problem is a text-messaging happy daughter who, if I let her, ties up my whole weekend with plans that she makes for the two of us - weekends are when I can get the most work accomplished.

It's sometimes difficult for me to set boundaries, but I've decided after this weekend I'm going to have to get tough. Lost a lot of hours of work time because of constant disruptions.

Even with all that, I'm much happier in my own home office!!!

I use to be fairly distracted at home as well plus I have two dogs that always want my attention. What I found that really works is when I really need to focus, I would just head over to a public library for a day or even just 1/2 day, especially if they have study rooms. I always get a lot of work done there.

Lately, I found that if a unplug my internet cable and take my laptop to another floor of the house and work there, I also can get much done. So it looks like for me anyways, and I suspect for many others out there, the internet connection itself can be a very big distraction.

I was/am having this same issue but I have 2 kids under 2 so renting something isn't an option for me.

What I will be doing is putting my 21 month old in daycare and me and my daughter will hang out at a coffee shop that has Wifi so I can work there once we start bringing in more money. I know there are moms who stay home all day everyday and that is just not me.

If you can afford it then go for it. It will give you a place to go where you won't be distracted - unless the problem is actually that you're on email, instant messenger, Twitter, or Facebook too often.

seems that even while able to work from home, having an office is a great idea. it gives a more serious look to your business, and helps you work more... though you could still do so at home if you're highly disciplined.

Honestly, why do you stay at home. If you are working directly from your computer you are probably working purely online with no shipping, etc. Why don't you travel and work remotely? It would cost more but you are out and about and actually seeing the world.
