Getting from 1st to 2nd sale?

Anyone know of a way to deal with the bummer of looking at your site stats every day, seeing more human visitors, getting more clicks, but not making any sales? What keeps you going and motivated knowing that, ok I made back the money invested into the site...but now I need 4 more to actually get my money?

I'm starting to fear the 1st sale was only a fluke.

That happens to a lot of people. The real key is that you need to focus on where your traffic is coming from and weed out bad traffic. Also, see if you can optimize your site so that you can lead people to sales as quickly as possible. Buy Now buttons vastly improve conversions so try to install those.

A suggestion, read "Yes: 50 scientific ways to be more persuasive" It has a lot of good info on quick things to do to convince people.

A fluke? Nope, that thinking happens to everyone. You got that 1st sale, you'll get the 2nd.

About how many visitors did it take to that sale?

    Are you collecting emails/subscribers?

It couldn't have been more than ten, when the site was pretty new. Had to wipe stats because my plugin died (WP site) so I can't say for 100% certain.

I wasn't before, I am now. Just put up the page yesterday, but then 10 or so who have seen it so far haven't bitten yet. I'm working on drive more traffic (somehow I only average like...15-20 people a day), so it's just a matter of time until I get my 2nd sale...then 3rd...then 4th...etc. (or so I hope!)

Thanks for the book suggestion, will give it a look.

definitely need more visitors and subscribers. Your visitor to sale ratio will even out once you've gotten roughly about 500 visitors or so to your site.

I know that the first sale can be exhilirating, and from personal experience, and what I've gathered from other people, is that the first sale you make tricks you into thinking that you have done enough work to start making money. This is not the case!

Again, I speak from personal experience with this: I stopped writing as many articles as I did before I started getting leads in my CPA marketing campaign. I became more obsessed with seeing if my 30 impressions a day were turning into conversions. And, before I knew it, not was my traffic decreasing, but I started to see less and less conversions. Eventually dwindling down to zero within a month.

You need to stay on top of your work. A lot of success in affiliate marketing has to do with your persistence in keeping the traffic flowing and building a bigger and bigger empire. This way, you don't have to depend on just 2-3 income sources, but several from all across the board. Some days you will have one website that you own give you 3 conversions, and that site one week later isn't even getting traffic anymore! Why? There's tons of factors as to why, but that isn't what you should be worrying about.

Continue building your websites and working on getting more traffic.

    Create multiple outlets for income.

Don't stop until you hit your goal.

Thanks for the comments all. Started up a second website, going for the larger "authority niche" model (18ish pages, maybe more if I feel like it) and will be sticking with that model for the foreseeable future. I've broken down my desired method into some step-by-step things I can work on every day, gonna just keep going until I finish the site and have backlinking/traffic generation done...

Then start another one. I'm refusing to give up. I figure one sale per year covers domain costs for the year and hosting for a month, so that's the break even point. Of course, I'm not going to stop at once sale per year (hopefully!).

I agree the consistency and staying on top of the work are some of the keys to success with online marketing but so are test, test and test. I don't like to spend a lot of time on things that are not working for me because time is money.

    Nice affiliate link -_-

For me, it's hard to define "testing." How long do I stick with a website (which once they're set up are meant to be left alone) or affiliate or whatever before I decide to test another product? I feel like with testing people think too short term (like I get stuck doing sometimes) and randomly want to change things around every X number of days they don't make a sale.
