Managing time -what works best for you?

One fact we cannot escape is that everyone has 24 hours in a day!

How we use that time varies enormously, but often I hear people talking about not having enough time in the day.

Over the years of being in business, I have found that prioritising on my 'To Do' list and delegating/outsourcing have been most effective strategies.

What are your favourite tips or best strategies for time management?

Just add your views to this thread.

Regards.

For one, being very well organized does the trick for me. I agree with outsourcing of course, as there is only so much we can accomplish in a 24 hour span. I also delegate a lot here.

      Bernard,

Thanks for your swift reply and sharing what works for you.

Many try and often do not succeed. So, what are your top tips for being 'very well organized'?

That sounds like the 'eat a frog' concept. It works for some not all all.

          Thanks for sharing your tip.

Yeah, for me personally, this works.

Speaking to my brother, who is a fatigue and sleep pattern consultant, he says that people are at their mental peak at different times of the day. So one solution is never going to work for all.

Many people that I have spoken to believe that they are at their peak in the early afternoon. They say that they are not a morning person so they get the easy stuff done at the beginning of the day and work on the more challenging stuff in the afternoon. I used to believe that I was one of these people. I certainly wasn't a morning person.

However, whilst this might actually be true for some people a great number will have this belief because they are confusing Motivation with Mental ability. You are not motivated in the morning therefore you don't think you can get the challenging stuff out the way.

The only way to know if this is true is to at least try the worst, or most challenging, stuff at the beginning of the day. I was surprised to find that my mind was actaully a lot clearer in the morning and I could get the creative stuff done and found that I didn't get distracted as much. Then in the afternoon, when my motivation was higher, I would do the more robotic tasks.

This worked for me and I guess it will work for others but the only way you can know is to try it out. Don't take lack of motivation as an excuse for not doing the creative stuff in the morning. Try it, if you can't do it as well then, yes, you are probably more of an afternoon guy.

Once you know how you work best, plan around that. Detailed daily plans are essential for me.

          Hope this helps someone.

          All the best

A well planned and scheduled work can make your number of hours and work loads easy.

        Another strategy used by many.

Seems to work best when done the day before.

time is the most limited resources on the earth planet, and yet what one needs to accomplish withing that limited time is numerous. my philosophy is this "you can never achieve every thing in a day, but you can achieve the most profitable things in a day" so, i just plan my day by first focusing on the most profitable programs for the day.

Yes, automation can be great -once you know which tools to use.

As an OLM, what are your favourite automation tools?

Hi Josh -great reminder to us newbies that both the 'luck' and riches come from hard work.

Of course, it's not only the longer working, but the smarter working. This is where automation is such a huge boost.

      Regards.

Well I have said this on the forum before but it is worth repeating.

In all the tasks you carry out.

DO the best that you can.

      DO NOT strive for perfection.

I believe that the ability to develop and cultivate good decision making skills is a very significant factor for life in general and time management skills.Good decisions will give us good results but emotional decisions will certainly guarantee us bad results.

here are 5 thing yo u can do to make the most use of your time
1.Work on what you do the best and Outsource the rest : Whatever you like doing is what you should do only .leverage other peoples time and experience in gettting your work done

    2. Automation : Internet based steps can automated .Invest in creating software that automates as much as you can so do not have to repeat every day

    3. Set more deadlines for yourself : Don't set the deadline unless you mean . Let there be a negative consequence if you do not meet your deadline

4.have a mentor and accountability partner : If you have someone breathing down your neck , you are more likely to get the work done because you know it is not ok to leave the work uncompleted

5 .Review Your Progress: very important step .Most people forget to review their progress. When you apply the strategies shared , review your progress so far and see what is working for you and what is not working for you . Keep doing what is working and don't lose more time on what is not working

  • Thanks everyone for your comments on this post. Apologies for not responding earlier -got too busy offline with those urgent and important tasks.

I really appreciate the tips on how we can manage time better in order to be more productive. Peterdeg thanks for sharing the psychological perspective and highlighting the difference between Motivation and Mental Ability. Guess, it is often a question of preference, as focusing on the most challenging tasks first can be very effective once done within a given time-frame. Magnates, I agree fully with your suggestion to set deadlines -and keep them. When a specific time is not set, then the morning can pass without the tasks completed.

Guess the flipside is doing the robotic tasks first in order to devote time to thinking of solutions to the more difficult tasks -and to no longer have the excuse of doing the simple tasks as a distraction or an excuse for procrastination.

Magnates, thanks also for highlighting the importance of making time to 'Review Progress'.

    Best wishes.

Mostly what I do every morning is create a day plan with bullet points in a notepad what I want to accomplish today. I copy the latest day tasks and copy for this day and change the day. So if some tasks take a week I remember to do some part of it. I also prioritize the tasks and start the ones I dont like that much or the most difficult/creative. I do them in the morning as I know I will be the most refreshed then.
