Desperation, Being Overwhelmed and Burnout

Being in a financially dire situation can cause people to try too hard. This desperation for instant results causes people to flit around from one technique to the next while never making headway on anything.

As others have said in this forum before, if you need money immediately you're not going to get it right away with IM. Is it possible? Sure, but it is very unlikely and you're only going to become burned out and frustrated and then eventually quit.

The cold hard truth is that you're going to have to make some sacrifices in the short term to take care of the immediate financial need. Whether it's selling your X-Box or working nights at McDonald's, you do what you have to do to survive.

I know a lot of this is a repeat of what continually comes up in this forum, but recent emails have made me realize that people still think that the IM road is paved with gold and they should be able to become millionaires in a week. I think two of the biggest reasons for failure is either A) wanting something for nothing or B) becoming burned out when the projected thousands don't come rolling in.

I think success is largely based on the individual. People learn differently, work at different speeds and have different motivations for wanting to make money online. The best way to get started is to begin slowly and make a commitment to do at least something every day. I myself was very burned out in the beginning because I felt like I had to have all of this work done in one day. This gave me a sense of being in over my head to where I would push myself for a week, become totally burned out and then not do anything for a few months.

I now have a new approach where I drip feed content each day. Some days I might put out 10 articles, other days I might only do 1. This slow and steady drip has really produced a snowball effect where sales are beginning to grow and I'm now making some headway. I also eliminated several domains that weren't performing because I was too busy trying this and that and not becoming good at one thing. Now, by sticking with just the one technique, It's starting to pay off. This of course wasn't over night.

The point here is that if you're only focused on the money (as in the case of those that are in a spot financially), you're going to act out of desperation without clear thought. If you take the idea of "I'll just do something every day and if I make money great, if I have to wait for the money, that's ok too", you're taking a lot of pressure off of yourself. You're giving yourself permission to have fun with it without feeling like if this particular effort fails it's the end of the world. I know it is a business and should be treated as such, but don't kill yourself trying. All of these quotes of "massive action" don't necessarily mean all in the same day. It doesn't matter if you're taking one step each day or sprinting while taking 5 steps at a time. What matters is what YOU can do each day.

Once I slowed down a little and focused on one technique, I realized that this really isn't that hard......

Cheers!!
Mary

Great post and well put. Everyone is motivated by different things, but working from a point of fear and desperation is not productive.

Slow and steady always wins the race. I like the idea of doing a little bit every day but sometimes you just have to do what you can and try to fit everything around your busy life. I have a full time job and so manage my IM as a side income. One hour an evening is all it takes to maintain my $1600 month income, but it took me 8 months of hard slog to get there.

Hey Ross, nice post, sounds like you are doing it just right. If only you could put more time into it, I think you'd make a killing.

Excellent thought out post, I'm sure we've all been there at some point when starting out in IM. A nice slow steady pace is the way forward, and stick with one technique. Test test test!

If you don't think that technique works out, then move on to the next one. Don't be in a mad rush to get every method you see on the go and expect instant results because then you will fail.

What I suggest to those who are feeling really frustrated is to come up with a plan. Extensive research first, it's very important that you get the FAQ's first before jumping gun. Don't be afraid to ask other Warriors here for help, we're always willing to answer Questions. When you feel confident enough, implement the tecnique you have learned. Like I said before, come up with a realistic plan with realistic goals and you're on you way to success.

    All the best,
    Jason

Great post Mary. When I first came onto this forum I was blown away with all of the great information and resources that were available, especially in the War Room. I mean there's a lot of things learn and one of the first things I learned was exactly what you said in your post. I take my victories in steps. I started IM in May and right now I'm just in the step of monitoring my traffic. I've gotten a few clicks here and there which amount to about $15 over the two months, but what I'm focusing on now is getting my traffic count up. Then later I can focus on getting a good CTR or getting people to subscribe to my RSS feed.

And yeah, when people realize that internet marketing takes time and effort for it to be successful then they can have some realistic goals.

With the cost of living increasing one can only be assured that some people will work driven by needs while others because of panic of facing an uncertain future
while a few do this because they are building wealth or even enjoying it! Motives are usually numerous with a common goal; to make money.

Wise words. It's always good to try a lot of techniques at first to see what you like the best and what your most efficient at. After that you will know how each technique is done so in the end you can teach others how its done so you can outsource it and focus on your primary technique!

Wise word notrichyet. very wise words

results are hardily ever immediate . Consistency on the right strategies produces results.

there is no magic pill . No affiliate bullet no matter how many stories they tell in sales letter or product launches .

it is going to take some time like a brick and mortar business . The beauty of IM is that automative power of the internet

It is going to take time to build a solid team to create 7-8 figure income .

patience is asset .it won't happen in one day . if it did , everybody would already be rich in IM

Despiration is simply a product of get-rich-quick attitude. It is therefore a negative attitude that will produce negative results almost immediately.

I think our experiences here show that anything worthwhile will take time and effort, there is no easy fast track. The other thing is that focus results in much better results than trying out many things at once whether they be techniques, market areas or both.
