Friend Just Got Engaged Via Arrangement

Since relationships are ultimately part of success, I thought that I would share something here. A friend of mine who immigrated here to Canada from India just got 'engaged' via family arrangement to some girl living in India. He's a relatively young guy of 30 who has been here for about 8 years and never did much dating as I think the westernized women here have turned out to be either too much of a cultural difference (including Indo-Canadians) or a complete mystery to him.

Now, I'm not about to mess with a friend's relationships or culture but deep inside, I do wonder just how compatible a couple will be if they leave the responsibilities of finding a partner to family and relatives. This couple will not go through the usual courtship or dating progression to really get to know each other like most of us here in the western societies would.

My friend and I talked about this in general terms some months ago before his family started the 'search' and he said that family members would know best in terms of who would be compatible with him. Of course, I would have doubts about this.

How do the rest of you folks feel about such arranged marriages in general?

To be honest, I think it is pot luck when it comes to arranged marriages. If they are a great match for each other, they are very lucky.

There is no way of knowing what someone will be like in a relationship unless you date them for a period of time! For example, my ex was a great friend. Everyone loved him, he was sweet, funny, very caring, and a little shy. When we started dating, his closest friends who knew him for years thought he would be such a wonderful boyfriend.

He was abusive as hell! I had to put up with him threatening to kill himself to blackmail me and do things I can only describe as mind torture pretty much every single day for three years. That really stuffed me up. I was months away from marrying him. There was NO way of knowing he was like that on the outside, he just seemed like a caring and funny guy to everyone else and no one knew.

My personal belief is that people should date for AT LEAST a year before getting engaged or married. You need to know what a person is like for the whole four seasons. They are often not how they initially appear (for better or worse).

In the cult-like church I use to be part of, we were only allowed to date people who were also members. I had many friends aged 19-21 who dated their first guy and got *married* after nine months of dating (due to no sex before marriage and they were desperate to take it to the next level). This is really sad... nine months you are still in the infactuation stage and haven't seen the whole person yet. I often think this is similar to an arranged marriage in that it is pot luck if the two of you are really compatible.

Hope my post wasn't too long, but in summary I don't believe anyone can know the right person for you, including yourself. You need to date them first for a period of time. The only way an arranged marriage might work better is if the family can somehow get information on what the person was like in previous relationships. :\

    After that it's luck.

Very few things on this planet stink worse than emotionally needy male.

Very few things sadder than women that put up with them.

Very easy to say for people looking in from the outside. You can say you would do different, but for example, if someone held a gun to your head and said do this or else, is it still so easy? Anyway, if you were trying to have a crack at my situation (and I apologise if I misinterpreted you), there is FAR more to the story and it is ignorant to assume. But I don't want to go off topic here...

Would certainly be interested in hearing your views on marriage in general being pot luck though! Why do you believe that?

          Clara,

Let me apologize to you. I was in no way making a crack about your situation. I undoubtedly brushed up against a sensitivity and that was not my intent.

Many women feel they can not leave a bad relationship for many reasons. Who am I to pass judgement on them or their situation or their actions. Still... it hurts my soul at some level to see a woman's spirit caged in an abusive relationship.

I applaud you for making the emotionally difficult decision of getting out of a bad relationship. I understand that you have a good relationship going on right now. I hope that only improves with time.

          Again my apologies.

Joe, no harm done! It can be really easy to create our own interpretations of text over the Internet, so I wasn't fully sure. But I am always open to hear other people's opinions on matters, it's how we learn and grow, right?

And it is indeed a controversial topic, since while it may be the fault of the abuser, it also has a lot to do with the victim's state of mind.

            Take care.

I have some reservations about your opinion.I am 22 years old and I was born and bought up in India. So you can also think that I am defending our culture which I AM.But I want to clarify that even until 1930s marriage and virginity were synonymous even in Europe and North America which constitute western world. And at that time people normally used to date a person with whom they had an intention to marry. The basic change started with sexual revolution in 1960s when people started to consider commitment to one partner as an old-fashioned thing. But we must also not forget that the divorce rate of 50% which we see today in many western nations is a direct result of this mentality.I feel pain in my heart whenever i see a couple divorcing because the relation between a husband and wife is the foundation of our society. When people marry and have children it is called a family, when some families start living together it is called a neighborhood ,a collection of these small communities develops into a city and many cities merge into a nation .So if their is a problem in the basic unit of society and nation i.e family then it is going to have far reaching effects and it starts a chain reaction which has the power to destroy the social fabric of our civilization.Technology has given us many things but we have also paid a price for all of these things in the form of decaying moral values. The people who used to live 200 years ago, they didn't had access to computers, cars, planes, mobile phones or other things which technology has given us but they used to have a better family life then we have .And i would like to answer the question that how much time we need to understand a person. In my opinion dating a person and sharing a roof with the same person are two completely different things.Even if you are living with your parents, friends, siblings there are times when you will have serious misunderstanding with them but it doesn't means that we must completely cut-off our relationships with them.Marriage or living with a person is similar to whatever else we do in life it is going to take time to understand a person,to build trust and I think its a slow process like all other things in this world there are no shortcuts to building trust also .Life is another name of adjustments we all have to adapt ourselves to some extent to the needs of our family, friends and all the people with whom we have any kind of relationship.I am not saying that people must tolerate partners who are abusing or who use our emotions as a weapon against us.I know that there are times when we must just put our foot down and finish a relationship, but this decision should be based on the long term vision of our life and not on the short term.In my opinion it is much better to have a partner who will be with us in our 60s or 70s then spending our last days alone. If people will start thinking in this way then this world will look totally different .My recent blog post titled"The most Important Thing In Our Life:Our Mindset" covers some of my thoughts on the topic of marriage which you can read if you want. Please read only if you are interested my purpose in writing this reply was not to promote my blog post .I have written this post just because clara's ideas contradicts my belief in life .Please forgive me if you find this post too long.Waiting for your replies

I don't agree or believe in arrnged marriages. Family members don't untimately have to live with the person they pick for you. One simple fact is that the family/parent's idea of nice or wonderful may not be the same the person they are picking for, people are different and so are their views.

Although I would agree with the comment above, that it is not easy to comment from the outside. It's part of their culture, since there are families that pre-arranged the marriage of their sons or daughters and in fact, the parents themselves will the one who would choose for the partner of their child.

I have read some of it from magazines and cultures of other communities, that there are factors or reasons for doing that arranged marriage. One reason was the economic combination that the wealth of the other family will merge to the other, thus would make them more wealthy.

Another thing, it would depend on the persons involve in the marriage if their personality would work together.

This guy does have the option of not using his family as he can go to North American style dating and he has but only for a little bit - like an odd date here and a date there. I think it's also his discomfort and inexperience in the dating scene and with women in general in North America. So he's resorted to an 'easier' system to get hooked up.

It's good to hear he has a choice in the matter, although I still think it's not wise to marry someone you don't know. Or resorting to that if one hasn't had much luck dating... just my opinion. You are spending the rest of your life with them after all.

However, he's an adult and can make his own choices. And as another post said, it is a different culture and their way of doing things, something I wouldn't fully understand from the outside. So I just wish him good luck.

I've read many times before that arranged marriages in India have a very low divorce rate. This does not tell the whole story, as divorce may be so strongly discouraged by society or for other reasons it may be near impossible.

And divorce rate has nothing to do with happiness, love or contentment both parties feel in marriage.

However, I do not think we can dismiss arranged marriages for ourselves as I know some Indian friends who have had arranged marriages and were really happy. Especially one couple, they were quite a happy couple. Basically, their familes arranged them but they gave them so freedom. They said, "You will start dating now and if you like each other, you will get married." So they dated for about a year and they got along very well so they went ahead with the marriage. I don't think it's such a bad thing, really!

There can be negatives, too. I knew another arranged couple who obviously were not madly in love with each other and the husband ended up hitting on my girlfriend and trying to invite her to spend a weekend at an apartment he had that he said his wife didn't know about.

    So anyway...

It's no better or worse than any other sort of marriage arrangement, wether doing it yourself, using a matchmaker or having it arranged, the point is, you really never know anyone %100 and people change. It's all a gamble, so says the 50% american divorce rate. It's possible their way may be better as marriage is a tool for consolidating resources to care for and provide stable homes for the next generation. Everything else after that is icing. Those who forget that err on the side of blindness. Dowries, harems, polygamy, rotating polyandry, they all serve a purpose to certain people at certain times. I don't think any form is any valid than any other as long as the human race continues reproduce.

In every relationship type, you are going to have some happy couples and some unhappy couples...doesn't matter what it is. More than likely though, the norm is unhappy people. Its just the way we are made.

Arranged marriages are really like jumping off of a cliff. Unless the arrangement happened very early on in the couple's lives, they don't know much about each other. They may love the other, they may secretly plot to kill them.

Opinions aside though, this is a practice that has been going on a long time (I don't know specific dates), so there must be something to it. Just not my cup of tea.

Parents know their children very well more than everybody else and are therefore the best person to judge what makes an ideal marriage partner for their son/daughter.

So I believe that in societies like India, an arranged married can work or an arranged date (for example a dinner) to get them to know each other etc... Also, it can work because their mentality is that way that it is quite constraint already in everyday life.

The role of the woman is very well defined. And this is one important reason to consider.
You know already that you will deinitely get what your mother was doing for you, and all the generations before her. Plus some bonus if your chemistry clicks.
Most likely she will be faithful, dress pretty for you, be able to cook endless curry recipies, share your traditional views, expecting to produce a few children etc...

I think it could work also in more westernised traditional families where you have the family dinner with parents and grandparents every sunday etc...

So the answer to your question, ccora, is a definite yes.
