The best one is the one that gets you to change and move
your life in a new direction. Other than that they are all
pretty useless unless you want to write your own book in
which case you read other books to learn what to say.

For me the big one in my life was:

    "Light on Yoga" B.K.S. Iyengar

Bet you weren't expecting a book about Yoga, were you?

Tony Robbins started my journey in personal development.

I have read several books of his but it started with the "get the edge" program several years ago and that was perfect for the time of disaster that I was experiencing - I managed to pull myself up with Tony's help.

Since then I read a heap of others but prefer the Success University system for improving every part of my life.
I use it almost every day!

I taught myself at first and then in time I met people
who knew some things and I learned more from them...
and sometimes I showed others things I knew. I had
a girlfriend for awhile who taught Ashtanga and she
showed me a lot of things too.

I've been practicing (on and off) for a long time. In the
end the most influential part of the book was the inroduction -
at the time I got the book it was probably the best available
text in English. Many years have passed since and Yoga
exploded in popularity. Many good books are DVDs are
        available now.

Some of my favorite books are:

      Think and Grow Rich
      The 4 Hour Work Week
      The 4 Hour Body

With a lot of us being busy marketers and managing our online business, we often don't have time to do as much reading as we'd like. I found an awesome website that basically summarizes all these excellent books into a 6 page .pdf and 20 minute .mp3 audio per book. They take out the best quotes and strongest points in the book and summarize everything.

For me, the quintessential self-improvement book is "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People". It's a book that truly focuses on building your character and principles, and reminds you to focus on your personal relationships more than trying to blast a message out to the masses. It's the book that really taught me how to listen and understand how people feel.

There are so many other great books, though. Here's a small list:
