My mother has played an important role in my character building. I have learned sacrifice, adjustment, managing crisis situation from her. All these are now helping me to handle situations in my professional life.

Between father and mother who played the pivotal role in your life, the most? would you like to share?

I wish I had have had a father figure, a role model so to speak, but you have to go with what you're given I suppose. It's just harder to figure out how to be a man when you're living with 2 women

My upbringing was the same dude. I agree that it made it harder to figure out how to be a man and I believe I over compensated for quite a while. Nevertheless, my mum was great and continues to be and I have vast amount to thank her for.

Dear pethanks008, I appreciate your view. But point was not of priority but of role playing. Both are valuable gifts to us but not both play equally strong role in building our sole.

      Thanks

I would never put an equal value on my mother and father.

My mother raised us alone - my father hasn't bothered to see us since I was 5 years old - why in the world would I even consider holding him anywhere near as high in value as my mother.

I can very easily say that it was my mother that played the biggest role in my life.

Even though my parents divorced when I was young and I lived with my mother, I think I'm more like my dad than mom, but in my opinion those are just genes.

In fact I have been trying to differ from my father as much as I can, not because he has a bad life or is terrible human, but I just want my life to be different. But it seems the more I try to be different, the more similar I become.

You dont have to push hard to be different from you Father, your trying to be a better human this is what counts. In the End of the day the urge to be better defines who you are.

When a human being grows up, the most influential and dedicated part of their life is their parents. Both of them are loving, kind, caring for their kids. Above all, mother deserves the most respect as she is the one who usually take care of her child for 24 hours.

I would say my mom played the most important role. But not so much as a kid growing up.

I feel now she is way more important than ever as she really shows me what motivation is all about. She used to drink quite a bit, but now she is just amazing. She hasn't drank in more than 3 years, she rides a bicycle nonstop everyday (next week she's riding on a 40 mile trip!) and she goes to the gym all the time. She's really blown me away with how much she has changed.

And with that change, comes my self-change. I used to be very shy, I didn't have friend, nor did I even want any friends. Honestly I was the "nerd" that did bad in school. I hated everything around me. But over the last few years I have majorly changed in many ways and I can say my mom has helped out a lot in that process

P.S. I don't like using the word "mother" as she is a "mom". A "mother" in my eyes is more biological, whilst a "mom" is that person you love and care dearly for.

@Powell747, single moms for the win!

    @sdbagley,

I am sorry to hear that. I can actually relate.

When I was in high school I was introduced to a career counselor. Instead of pushing me and saying that I could do anything, it was suggested that I should take a job doing labor, construction, or working for a restaraunt.

My teachers never expected me to get anywhere (well a few were supportive, but the majority weren't), they continually pushed me into thinking I wasn't worth anything. And I began to believe them.

During middle school and onto the end of high school I had an extremely low self esteem. I actually hated my life to be honest. I never thought I would ever succeed at anything because of how people looked down on me.

I graduated in 2008 with one of the lowest GPA's in my entire class. Heck, I barely passed.

Now I can say I dealt with 2 major life changing events. My first brother passed away with cancer in my junior year of high school, while my second brother passed away 2 days after my graduation. I was really screwed up for quite a while too.

But in time I began to realize that little things don't matter. I stopped worrying so much about what people think about me. I started helping people and pushing others to be better.

Unlike those that put me down and bullied me in high school, I rose up and I try to make others feel awesome about themselves.

If you tell me you aren't anything, you're wrong. You probably have so much more to offer this world. So I definitely want to see you succeed dude Don't EVER let anyone put you down or make you feel bad for what you believe in.

Oh and just to clarify, even with everything I dealt with in high school (there were many other things as well effecting my life), I now own multiple business's and have built a foundation of more than 130 sites (have to update my Warrior forum status, ha!).

So never give up. Keep pushing. And again. NEVER let anyone put you down. But if they do, don't worry You'll prove them wrong in due time.

I would have to say both, I know most of the time the Father always leave the Mother and it's really sad... Although, having a dad he can be very hard on you but having a Father around tells you that you have to be a man. Your dad is basically the head of the house, then comes your mom she shows affection. Without your parents, they wouldn't have you and there's nothing above them!

My Mother was always supportive of what I wanted to do. My Father, on the other hand, believed that you get a good job at a big company and stay there until you retire. He couldn't understand why I wanted to go to college when I had such a good job. He eventually came around and accepted that I wanted more out of life.

He meant well; those were his beliefs. He was a good provider, and my mother was my greatest ally. I miss them both.

My Father was the one who really made the biggest impact on my life. Although I was just a teenager when he died, I can remember one conversation that totally changed my way of viewing things forever. He taught me not to be part of the problem, but to be part of the solution. He taught me one very huge skill, and that was to take action. It was not merely enough to be upset over a situation, you had to find the answer, take action, and then the outcome could be different. He always strived to be a better person and challenge himself to learn more. He was quite a man, and I am sorry that we did not get more time together, as I am sure there would have been a great deal to learn from him. But I will be forever grateful for the seeds he planted in my brain, and for giving me the tools I needed to lead a productive life.

My parents were young when they got married and were forced by their parents to do so because my mother was pregnant with me.

They never got along but they each showed me a tremendous amount of love growing up and still today.

When they divorced I was relieved instead of sad. I knew early on that they were happier apart than they were together.

I still saw my dad every day and I spent the weekends with him. He put forth the effort to be present in my life.

He never missed a birthday, graduation or any other special event.

So, if I had to choose, I'd have to say my dad probably strengthened my character the most.

Pivotal...I think this word is such a relative term for me when it deals with this question...My mother raised us and as a caregiver (one that clothed and fed us) was pivotal in that regard. As an emotional entity, she was however non-existent. I grew up hearing how I was supposed to be an abortion and was left to wonder why I was alive at all and hence struggled with suicidal attempts at every turn. I actually began to research how to do it right because I felt like such a failure that I couldn't even succeed at completing my own demise. My father really was not involved in my life and having his own 'new' family, left little opportunity for any change in his level of interaction in my life. I did make a conscious effort to get to know him when I was in my mid twenties. He ended up dying not too long after and I will always remain grateful I found closure in that relationship. I found new understanding of all the events that had transpired during my formative years and was finally able to have a relationship with my father. I learned so much from all the events in my life. Although there are things I still struggle with in wanting to be loved and accepted, I think they both played a pivotal role in my life.

My dad has pushed me through a lot of hard times when I felt like giving up or not trying at all and if it wasn't for him, I don't know if I'd be where I am today. Mother's usually play the role of the nice parent and then fathers are usually the strict ones who apply discipline and that's basically the type of household I grew up in. But yeah my dad has really inspired me to strive and be a successful individual.

Hard to choose. I was very close to both growing up and so I learned so much from them I could never begin to write/tell it all.

Both were born in the very early 1930's, so that was a different generation, growing up in the depression era. I learned how to stretch things, money, food, material things, whatever, to the point that I can live happily and comfortably on FAR less than most would believe possible. It's common sense to me to not be wasteful, because I was taught that growing up.

They believed in honesty and hard work, and treating others with respect. We spent time together. We didn't waste our time on reality shows and video games and it was a completely different life than kids see today. Very sad, I think.

I would have to say that every good quality I have today was learned from them. Money was really tight, and I didn't get presents on birthdays and xmas, etc.. but I never went hungry (as my parents had growing up) and had everything I needed, plus a 75 acre farm to play on which was heaven to me. So even though I didn't have a lot of material things growing up.. I had more wealth than most because I had so much that really meant something. It shaped who I am and for that I am so grateful.

      Chris
