What Self-Improvement Book Have You Repeated Reading The Most?

There's a saying ...
"If a good self-improvement book you own is falling apart -- your life won't!"

So, what self-improvement book have you read the most.
Hint: Some pages may be scotch-taped, dog-eared or food stained!

I personally have several, but my top 3 are ...
- Pray and Grow Rich, by Katherine Ponder.
- How Faith Works, by Frederick K. Price.
- The Book of Proverbs, by King Solomon.

Ha..ha, good definition of good book. Yet i am very practical person. Always eager to practice what i read. I like going to the root causes of things.
I like Abraham Hicks teachings. Like reading about approaches that work fast. Immediate or quick positive feedback is important in self-growth and new endeavors.
I finding myself jumping back and forth between books and finding something anew every time - maybe thats why none of them are dog-eared?

I really like The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale. The Magic of Thinking Big is another. And of course there is "First Things First" by Stephen Covey, and his "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People". So "The Niche Man", where did you get that quote from ? "If a good self-improvement book you own is falling apart -- your life won't!" It's pretty cool.... Thanks for sharing, btw, since one of your fav's is Proverbs, one of my favorite verses is Proverbs 3:5-6. Thanks for sharing "The Niche Man"

The only one that I've really reread is "I Will Teach You To Be Rich" by Ramit Sethi.

I really enjoyed some of Anthony Robbins' books as well. I had big plans of rereading them but I ended up taking NLP courses. Since most of the books are NLP, kind of defeats the purpose.

Oh yea, that's a classic. One of the first books I ever read dealing with the subconscious mind - over 20 years ago. I remember how easy it was to understand, for such a complex subject at the time. It helped show me where all the handles, buttons and switches were.

maybe it's to cliche, so people are avoiding it, but I've read and reread Think and Grow Rich numerous times, and my first copy is falling apart. : ) But I have notes written in the margins, plus post its stuck in there with more of my thoughts. I recently bought a new copy to have with me all the time in my computer bag, so I have something to look at while in lines or waiting rooms. My wife also has her own copy..

I'm also rereading (totally different, but inspiring to me) Rebel without a Crew, which is Robert Rodriguez telling how he broke into the film industry as an independent film maker. I've written a screenplay and am working on my second one, so it's inspiring to know that anything is possible.

This may sound weird but Dune and the original 3 sequels.

It is of course a story about mutiple generations of people but in there is many lessons and some of the little "quotes" given before the chapters are great.

"A beginning is the time for taking the most delicate care that the balances are correct."

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

"The difference between a good administrator and a bad one is about five heartbeats. Good administrators make immediate choices ... [that] usually can be made to work. A bad administrator, on the other hand, hesitates, diddles around, asks for committees, for research and reports. Eventually, he acts in ways which create serious problems ... A bad administrator is more concerned with reports than with decisions. He wants the hard record which he can display as an excuse for his errors ... [Good administrators] depend on verbal orders. They never lie about what they've done if their verbal orders cause problems, and they surround themselves with people able to act wisely on the basis of verbal orders. Often, the most important piece of information is that something has gone wrong. Bad administrators hide their mistakes until it's too late to make corrections ... One of the hardest things to find is people who actually make decisions."

Beyond that you see a boy rise to a position of power. And grow to understanding as his creation takes over his life.

You watch his son make a choice to take power because he knows what is best.

The one was pushed into a position of power and never wanted it. In the end he allowed that which he created to turn against him.

The other embraced an impossible choice. To lead and be hated. To do what must be done because only he had the ability and vision to see it.

Are you Paul who let's destiny take hold and is merely along for the ride?
Or are you Leto willing to make the scarifice that is needed to acheive greatness. Even if that means those around you will hate you?

Greatness finds many men. Some embraced it and take control of it. Others let it flow and soon they are controlled by others and by their creations.

Each of us has a chance to live a life of personal greatness. Some of us become so great we become titans like Jobs, Gates, and Branson. Others just let life pass over them. Does your life have a rudder? You can not always sail against the wind but you can learn to navigate through life as it comes. Or you can let the flow merely take you along. You might still end up with greatness but you will feel trapped.

"You should never be in the company of anyone with whom you would not want to die."

Very similar to what jobs said a few years back.

"If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today? And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something."

If you died today are you with the people you would want to die with? Are you doing the things you want to be doing? If not change it. Take control of your life.

Excellent book, many have said that book (published in 1910) helped to influence the classic "Think and Grow Rich" in many ways.

For example, what it called "Giving More in Use Value" The book Think and Grow Rich called "Going The Extra Mile."

    Great thread.. great question man!!
I like many of the books listed here.. a few new ones to check out..
Think and grow rich is my most worn out book.. (i need to wear it out some more)
but i find i'm much more a watcher and listener.. if i really want into a course/book etc i listen.. Brian Tracey's university on wheels concept.. if i like the content i'll listen over and over and over.. i find you here something different each time and start to own the material in terms of understanding it.. you also end up knowing much of it word for word.

My most worn out audio programmes..
Brian Tracey - Psycology of Achievement
Steven Covey - Seven Habits of highly effective people
Tony Robbins - All his stuff audios.

if i had to list books
    think and grow rich
    7 habits

but i listen to stuff 10,000 times as much as i read.. i just find i can make more time to do that while driving.. doing jobs around the house etc.. i also like listening to the author because as Robbins teaches us so much of communication is the tonality and inflection in our voice.. on that note i feel i have to mention Jim Rohn - The art of achievement.. in fact any of his.. and also Dennis Waitley.. i only ever had one audio tape of his and i probably know most of it word for word.. awesome stuff..

looking forward to checking out the video below of the preacher guy..
there's an ex preacher/ network marketer i love to listen to called Bob Crisp.. wore many of his tapes out which exactly what he taught you to do with them.. : )

    thanks again

      Funny story on that:

I found the book "top 10 distinctions between millionaires and middle class" at Barnes and Noble.

I read it and made $2000 from it.

I carried it around and used it as a sketch-holder--and read it pretty often.

Four years later, I'm still carrying it around with me 24/7--but all the text has been put on my computer and my iPhone, and now I use the physical book as an iPhone holder. Believe me, I get all kinds of funny comments about it.

"Looking Out For #1" is one that has quite a few pages bookmarked. It's an oldie but goodie that was written in the 70's and stayed on the New York Times bestseller list for about a year. I read it a couple of years ago after picking it up in paperback at a library used book sale. It was, by far, the best quarter I ever spent. In fact, I just read an excerpt from it again last week.

I haven't technically reread this yet, but I know that I will - many, many times. "The Millionaire's Fastlane" by MJ DeMarco. The title really sells the content short, IMO.

It's very possibly the best business book I've ever read - it connects a lot of dots and has really influenced the way I make business decisions. My understanding of where my business needs to go in order to get what I want from life has increased dramatically.

It's sort of like the ultimate long-term IM roadmap.

I have read two books lately that surprised me:

"How to get lots of money for anything fast" by Stuart Lichtman
That book sounds like a get rich quick lesson but it opened my eyes to some interesting ideas about the subconscious

"Healing Back Pain" by Dr. John Sarno
examines the link between the subconscious and back pain, something that has helped me A LOT!

Also, I have My own book, Motivation Mastery.

I read the Bible to keep me grounded about what really matters in life--to love God and seek to do good for others. Life is not really about amassing wealth and enjoying pleasure; it's about staying healthy and keeping the end in mind. To that end, I also enjoy rereading The Power of Positive Thinking by NVP. I'm amazed at all the stories he has in that book about amazing things happening when people choose to think they "can" instead of worrying about what they "can't".
