The Olympics Inspire Me

I'm watching the Olympics last night and I see Shawn Johnson...

Here's a 16 year old girl who has already reached more of her potential than most people will throughout their entire lifetime...

The discipline, the commitment, the pride... to simply focus on one single area of her life (gymnastics) and *truly* see what she's capable of.

or

Micheal Phelps who stretched himself to the absolute limit and won a gold medal by the length of a finger nail. But ya know, to me it's not about the gold medal. Right then and there, in that moment, he declared to himself and everyone else that was watching that he was a champion.

I watch these people and I'm flat out inspired.

It's so easy to begin making 1, 2 or 3k a day and begin to get comfortable. The 4 hour work week is great but after you achieve it.... after you spend some time with the realization that you don't have to worry about money.... is that really enough for you to feel completely fulfilled at the end of the day? (no right or wrong answer)

For me it's not. And watching these athletes was a good wake up call to get back to being hungry... to get back to constantly raising my standards.... to play the game not simply for the money but to simply play the game....for the love of the game.

What would happen if someone applied this same discipline; these same olympic standards to I.M?

Don't forget, behind each of these athletes is a whole team. Parents that for a decade made sure their son or daughter practiced, was at practice on time, and laid the drive to make it possible. A coach or two who saw greatness in them, and their teammates who pushed them beyond what they thought possible.

Agree 100%. I keep remembering the Jamaican Usain Bolt who won the 100m almost effortlessly. Can't wait to see what happens at the 200m tomorrow.

Thats correct, and it can take the same steps to become successful in business. You may need partners (or a mastermind group) to push you. You will need to test (practice) your products and marketing. And its always good to have a coach beside you telling you exactly what to do...

This Olympics has been wonderful, with many records breaker and for the first time, the most number of countries participating.

Kudos to China for giving us a wonderful Olympics (even though they have their own problems) !!!

I dont think Bolt had the force, determination, commitment, and perserverance as most athletes. This guy just has sheer talent. He beat them without exerting any energy or even breaking a sweat. Now, the guys who were trying to beat him exuded the determination, etc of a winner, but unfortunately it was not enough to be what they call... "a freak of nature." Bolt just has supernatural abilities.

As for Michael Phelps. Wow, I can't say enough about this guy. He was absolutely awesome. He set a goal for himself and he was determined to accomplish that goal, which took years of hard work and practice. Not to mention tons of food. Did you know that he eats 10k - 12k calories a day??? Unbelievable.

Don't forget that Phelps is diagnosed with ADHD too. He was truly hyperactive in his younger years and his mind was always flying out of the window in classes. He had to undergo medication to keep himself focused in school. And I think swimming is the best sport for a hyperactive person like Phelps. The force that he exerts is comparable to Bolt since according to the article that I read in a newspaper, he practices a lot besides eating tons of food. If he wanted to clock himself, say 56 seconds to reach one lap, then he'll do that everyday and maybe try to beat that record down to 55 or 54 if he can. And the sports analysts then said that only one man can beat Phelps, and that was himself.

I guess it applies to everyone when there is a need to push ourselves far greater to what we have already achieved. The will to exceed our expectations is worth the training for the bigger challenges in life. It keeps us focused and mentally in tip-top shape.
