Success = Critics: Do Haters Make You Greater or a Retaliator?

If you achieve any level of success, momentum or you just stand out from the crowd - you'll usually attract haters (critics, detractors or skeptics).

How do you react when faced with haters? Do they make you greater or just a retaliator.

I admit I have a little bit of both in me, in my younger days I'd just retatilate. But now in my old age I've learned to retaliate a different way. How? By focusing more on my primary goals and staying in my lane - and letting the haters ... hate, talk or squawk.

Success "really is" the best revenge!

What's your approach toward haters?

They remind me that I'm doing something right. : )

It's a sad fact of life that many people try and keep others down because they're insecure about their own ability to be “successful.” Like you said Niche Man I simply stay on my own course.

I simply keep doing what I am doing and I do not worry about it. Usually the person hating on you is trying to project their insecurities and inferiority complex onto you. When you do not act accordingly they get pissed and try to turn up the juice.

It depends from whom it came.

If it comes from a Billionaire, i'll listen to it.

If it comes from one of my customers, i'll listen.

If it comes from a guy that is 30 years old and work at Mc Donald, i'm not going to listen.

Here's a copy of the opening post of a thread regarding haters.
          ---
As your online presence increases, you will come in contact with all types of individuals. Timothy Ferriss, of 4-Hour-Workweek fame, gives some practical ideas about handling different types of people and situations.

In the blog post and video:
Tim gives his rules for comments on his blog.
Shares how he deals with the media and giving interviews.
Gives guidelines for dealing with negative situations in general.

Tim elaborates on his 7 Great Principles for Dealing with Haters:

          1. It doesn't matter how many people don't get it. What matters is how many people do
          2. 10% of people will find a way to take anything personally. Expect it.
          3. "Trying to get everyone to like you is a sign of mediocrity." (Colin Powell)
          4. "If you are really effective at what you do, 95% of the things said about you will be negative." (Scott Boras)
          5. "If you want to improve, be content to be thought foolish and stupid." (Epictetus)
          6. "Living well is the best revenge." (George Herbert)
          7. Keep calm and carry on.

The video concludes with a good Q&A session.

I see a lot of people just backlashing against their critics and hard, especially here on the forum.

Sometimes, they end up looking confident and assured, but often they take it too far and end up looking just like jerks who can't take any criticism.

There have been guys who have been hounded unnecessarily by guys who go ape over a tiny detail of someone's product or sales copy, and the product creator in one case dealt with absolutely professionally even when the other guys were way, way out of line. I've seen this a few times.

It's all in how you deal with it and what works best for you. But don't ruin your rep by getting dragged into something that just becomes a time waster and drags your energy down.

How do you react when faced with haters? Do they make you greater or just a retaliator.

In my younger days, I'd retaliate. It lead to a bunch of suspensions from school and a couple terms - nobodys perfect. I realized I was just a proud individual who commanded respect.
Now, I laugh at them. If they have no reason I thank them for making me appear to be more intelligent than I already am and encourage them to continue. Or I mention my 6 year old just stopped doing that when she realized she was too mature to continue on.
I also learned a trick from Tom Hopkins, "Don't let them see you mad" before you get a chance to workout. I must say that trick literally added an inch to my biceps and triceps =-)

I so often see people talk about haters. Haters this and haters that.

WHO are these haters? I don't believe I have ever encountered a hater. A person who hates on me or my actions.

Where do you people live/post or what are you doing that you get so many haters?

If you've never had a hater then you're probably not living on the edge, being different or thinking too much outside the box. Those actions are what I call "hater bait."

I've never had a hater who said something to my face. Most people who have 'hated' on me usually said it behind my back and it came back through the grapevine. My friends know not to even share that stuff with me unless its a valid point and even then, delete the source and look at the validity of the content.

I suppose I'll have some haters in the next year or so. Like they say, to avoid criticism, do nothing, say nothing, be nothing.

I used to get so bothered by the haters and I would try so hard to convenience them otherwise.

But I learned that it's not even worth it.

So when the haters come knocking, I know I must be doing something right.

I don't get angry because everyone has a right to their opinion, just as I have a right to mine.

I have a very good quote about motivation that goes very well with haters.
